How do you connect a usb printer and usb external hard drive to the airport extreme, as it only has one usb port?

I'm thinking about upgrading my old 802.11g router for a new airport extreme. Can it connect to a usb printer and external hard drive at the same time and acutally work. It only has one usb port on the back.
thank you!

To add multiple USB printers and/or HDDs, you just first need to connect a USB hub (powered prefereably) to the AirPort's USB port, and then, add the USB devices to the hub.

  • Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router.  The Time Capsule looks amazing.  However, I have Macs and PC's in my how.  So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule.  I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

    Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    MS DOS FAT32

No, you can't. Only a printer. You can with the Extreme, though.

    Hi,
Try this select to check backup history:
    Select
    r1.database_name,
    r1.name,
(case r1.[type] when 'D' then 'Full database backup' when 'I' then 'Differential database' when 'L' then 'Transaction Log Backup' else r1.[type] end) as BackupType,
    r3.physical_device_name,
    r1.backup_start_date,
    r1.backup_finish_date,
    r1.backup_size,
    r1.compressed_backup_size,
    r2.is_compressed,
    r1.server_name,
    r1.first_lsn,
    r1.last_lsn
    from msdb.dbo.backupset r1
    inner join [msdb].[dbo].[backupmediaset] r2
    on r1.media_set_id = r2.media_set_id
    inner join [msdb].[dbo].[backupmediafamily] r3

  • How do you transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive it won't recognise

how do i transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive? it just wont recognize

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.
    Sorry,

  • Using an external hard drive with an airport extreme and HP computer

    - I recently bought the airport extreme, and also bought a Seagate external hard drive for my music files.  I can see the hard drive on the airport utility but cannot access it or find where to access it.  I am using an HP computer with windows 7.
    Help please!

The AirPort Extreme cannot share out the attached Seagate USB hard drive if it is formatted in NTFS or ExFat. Please check to see that it is formatted in either FAT32 or HFS+ (Apple format).
If it is already formatted in either of the latter two formats, then verify that the AirPort Utility can properly identify the hard drive by using the AirPort Utility for Windows.
Finally please checkout the following Apple Support article for details on accessing this shared drive from a Windows PC.

  • I am attempting to connect an external hard drive to my airport extreme and see this hard drive under time machine preferences. I used to able to do this under Leopard, but no longer under lion, even after downloading Airport utility 5.6.

Hi, I am attempting to see my extrenal hard drive, connected to my airport extreme base station, in time machine. I formatted the disk, backed up my mackbook pro to it via usb, and now want to be able to backup over wifi with my disk connected to my airport extreme base station. I spoke with Apple Care, and they told me Apple doens't support this. I used to be able to do this with my older MB pro and under older osx's. I do see the external hard drive connected under disks, just not in time machine preferences. Is there a workaround available that anyone is aware of?
    Thank you so much,

  • How can you back up your ipod onto your external hard drive that you're using in time machine?

I just bought an external hard drive and want to put my ipod music on it but can't figure out how.  My ipod has music that my itunes library on my computer doesn't have.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also suggest you get a 2nd, much larger hard drive, partition it if desired, move your data to it, and start a 2nd Time Machine backup on it. You can set Time Machine to alternate between the 2 drives by adding the new drive to System Preferences/Time Machine. If you want to make a copy of your current backup on the new drive, you can do that using the Disk Utility Restore tab. If you chose to do that, make the copy first since using the Restore tab erases all data on the drive or the partition.

  • How do you move your iphoto library to an external hard drive--step by step because I dont even know the basics--Help!

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing.  I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it.  I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????"  Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this.  Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash
Check and make sure that your backup system is backing up yor external drive

  • How do you save a copy dvd to your external hard drive

I have managed to make a copy dvd to dvd thanks to all your help. Now I need to know how to save a copy dvd to an external hard drive. Your help will be appreciated. Please reply in as simple terms as possible because I am not up on the latest phrases and computer jargon lol

Mount the DVD on your desktop, then open it and pull VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop.  Put VIDEO_TS folder in a folder and label it so you will know what it is and then move that folder to your external drive.  The VIDEO_TS folder than can be burned into another dvd or played by VLC.

  • How do you transfer all your files to an external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive and tried to move all my files and documents onto it. The guy at the apple store told me to just drag my user into the hard drive (the icon with the house next to it when you go into Macintosh HD) but it said it could not do that. So i tried to drag just one word document into it and it still had the error. I tried from a PC and it worked fine. Could it be that this external hard drive only works with a PC and Microsoft Operating Systems? Do I need to buy an external hard drive that is only for a Mac??
    Please help!!!!

    This is not unusual
Quick question, have you formatted the drive using the mac disk utilities?
If you need it to be accessed from both windows and mac, then make sure it's formatted as FAT32 or FAT Extended.
If you uses osx journaled, then the windows computer cannot read it.
When you've done this, then try and drag your files across.
    Two words of warning though.
1 when you format a drive, you erase all data on it, so make sure you have copies.
2 FAT32 has a max file size of 4GB, so if you have files larger than that, format as FAT Extended.

  • How do you transfer your itunes library from an external hard drive?

I've just bought a new internal hard drive for my macbook because I've run out of space. I'm planning on putting my itunes library on an external hard drive then putting it on the new internal hard drive... but i have no idea what the best way to do that is, since it isn't just the files that are important, my playlists and all the changes to song names need to stay intact. and also i'm gonna put snow leopard on the new hard drive if that makes any difference?
Hope some one can help me find the best way!
    peacexx

I have much the same problem. I have my iTunes files on an 80GB external drive along with my iPhoto files. Currently, my MacBook Air sees and operates from the iTunes setup on the 80GB drive. To provide more space to handle these files I got a 500GB portable external drive. Now I want to bring the iTunes files back into my MBA and, when complete, put them out on the 500GB drive from which I'll operate my iTunes. This might be simpler if the MBA had two USB2 ports instead of one. I've tried the method noted in "Transferring Your iTunes Library" (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/), but couldn't seem to get the 80GB files back to the MBA such that iTunes would see them there. (I copied the files over, but the link's broken.) Ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • How do i transfer data from a hard drive to the airport extreme

2 part question...(#1) I do not have a home based Mac/PC. I would like to know how I transfer all my data from iTunes to the Airport Extreme base? I need to free up space on my Mac book Pro, and I don't want to carry a portable hard drive around with me. (#2) After the data is transferred, will I be able to access it on a Apple TV?

The airport extreme has no data storage.  Where do you want the data to go?

  • How do i find my external hard drive through my airport extreme?

I have just installed my airport extreme. and also connected my external harddrive on it.
but i do not see it appearing anywhere?
    what did i do wrong?

If you have an 802.11n AirPort Extreme, click here and follow the instructions; an NTFS partition cannot be used through it. If your AirPort Extreme isn't an 802.11n model, you can't.
