To keep track of messages you receive from especially important people, make them VIPs in Mail. You can have up to 100 VIPs.

To remove VIP status from a sender, click the VIP’s star in a message. The star is removed and the sender’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Favorites bar.
If a VIP has several email addresses in Contacts, messages from any of those addresses will appear in the VIP’s mailbox.
If you use iCloud Contacts, your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers that use iCloud Contacts and have OS X Mountain Lion installed.
So to remove a VIP mailbox, you would have to remove all its people, and then exit mail.

Although there is not a way to remove past purchases from your iTunes account completely, you can hide them so that you don't have to see them if you don't want to. This article will help you do that:
iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases - Apple Support
Hide your purchases
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
From the Store menu, choose Store > Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password.
Go to the iTunes Store.
Click Purchased from the Quick Links section on the right side of the iTunes Store.
Choose a content type by clicking Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books from the top of the window.
A list of your purchased items for the content type you are viewing will appear. Mouse over the item you want to hide until an X appears its top-left corner.
A confirmation dialog will appear once you click the X.

Thanks for taking the time to respond - however your reply didn't really help as you haven't explained how to delete the compilation album that had been created.
I managed to sort it out by doing the following (I'm posting this so that it may help others). I don't know if this is the simplest/most elegant solution - but it works.
In iTunes, find the compilation (in my case, the 153 songs) and, starting with the first song, follow this procedure:
On the iPhone go to 'Songs' and scroll down the list until you find the first song that was listed in iTunes (above). You should notice (as in my case) that the song will have the correct title (and artwork too if you'd found this previously before making the compliation) but the wring artist.
Swipe LEFT and press the 'Delete' button.
Repeat with second song in iTunes list, deleting the individual songs from the iPhone, one by one.
Although tedious, this seemed to work for me. Reason for doing down the iTunes list is that it is in a pseudo-alphabetical order and I wanted to make sure I'd got every one.
Now busy re-importing the original albums from CD.
Thank you APPLE for making this such a laborious process. Why can't designers actually TEST the products they design so that they can appreciate first-hand the likely problems?

I just purchased an iphone 5. I would like to know how you delete only certain pictures from the photo library. You can delete from camera roll, but not photo library!! There are duplicate pics and ones that I don't even want on my phone.

Your photo library is a complete list of all photos on your phone, including the camera roll and any albums you've created.
Therefore it will always duplicate photos in your camera roll.
The images are simply links, not additional copies of the photo

Has anyone figured out how to delete a group invite from iPad-- I removed it from the MAC computer without problem, but the sync with iPad and iPhone retains the invitation on iPad and iPhone. I did not create the group email, just received it. I sync through iCloud only. There iappears to be no way to remove the event directly from either iPhone or iPad when clicking on the event. Delete is not a choice.

You need to either delete it from whatever app you manage you contacts with on your computer or use an iOS app such as ABC Contacts and others.

You cannot delete/remove apps from your App Store purchases. They will remain there forever but they are not necessarly still on the device. You can hide your past purchases but need to do so using iTunes.

As was mentioned, just because they are showing in your purchases, it does not mean that they are on the device. If you have deleted them from the device and are no longer on the device, they are not using any of your device's storage. You'l' have to look elsewhere to see what is taking up the space you are missing.
Check Settings>General>Usage, then tap on Show all Apps to get an idea of what is physically on the device (Apps, Music, Photos, Videos, etc.)

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't delete shows from your history, you can only hide them and you need to do that from iTunes on your computer or mobile device
