How do you determine if you need a firmware upd

I'm an iMac newbie, so if this is a stupid question please forgive me.
I need to find out which version of firmware I currently have and what version is current.
I have found the Apple web site where they can be downloaded, but these sites do not tell you how to determine if you need it or not. At least I couldn't find it if they did.
How do I make these determinations?
iMac Intel 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   The absolute best computer I have ever owned!

Jon,
System firmware updates have been very rare, and have never been distributed by Apple through Software Update. The reason is that they have always required special handling, not simply a matter of download and restart.
Firmware updates are not software, but are irreversible changes made to the logic board or some other operating unit. They must be downloaded to the intended computer first, then all applications, etc. disconnected, then the installation proceeds according to specific instructions for each particular firmware update.
The SMC (System Management Controller) Firmware Update for Intel Macs is different from a system firmware update and is capable of being handled the same as any typical software update, therefore it was included within Software Update and most of us downloaded and installed it without giving it any special attention. I'm guessing that the newest iMacs that are sold with OS X version 10.4.7 installed already have the updated SMC firmware which is an older update than 10.4.7, but my assumption may be mistaken.
It very well may be that your PowerMac never have had a firmware update issued for it, as the majority of PowerMacs have never had one issued, as can be seen in this listing:

  • How come you need an iTunes Store account to get album art?

I have no problem with this, because I do have an account. But on my sister's computer, she can't get album art because she doesn't have an iTunes Store account. Mainly because you need a credit card to set one up, and she's only 10. She just uses iTunes to burn her CD's to play on her iPod, she's only 10, why does she need an account to get album art?

I don't think any of us can definitively answer this one since it is decided by somebody like iTunes marketing. However, Apple is a for-profit corporation. The album artwork download is definitely a service for customers, and maybe a free perk to potential customers. If you have that account you are just one tiny click away from making a purchase and don't even have time to have second thoughts that you might have if you had to enter a credit card number each time. Kind of like a store offering something free inside to get you to walk through the door.

  • TS3694 how do you update the firmware file on the iphone 4? says it wont update because firmware is not compatible

iphone update is saying firmware is not compatible, anybody know how to update firmware

Pretty sure I just downloaded the .exe files to the SD card (I have a directory called "drivers" there & ran from Windows, no need to boot from anything else. Didn't even need to use Safe Boot. The files do need an .exe extension IE someimes downloads as _exe. No idea why but would just need to rename if download has the underscore and not the period. The you can run them.
Was so easy I really did not think about it. One of the Intel Platform drives does say "requires 1.60 update" so that is the one you need. Do the 1.60, reboot, and then the Intel update.
Key point is the release note on the Intel Platform Installer
    "Release Notes
1.Please install the  Windows BIOS version 1.60 or higher for Encore WT8-A (PDW09x) before installing this Intel Platform Installer update." note this says "BIOS" and not "USB BIOS" which is a smaller file.

  • DSX-S310BTX Media Player: How Do You Need To Label mp3 Files On Flash Drive To Search Internal USB?

I have a DSX-S310BTX Media Player.  I'm connecting a Flash Drive to the Internal USB port of this device.  On the flash drive the mp3 files are labled by Title, Contributing Artist and Album.  However, when a song is playing, the main display doesn't show the name of the song, and I can only do a "File & Folder" search by individual songs, but not by artist or album.  Is there a specific way I need to label the files on the flash drive to be able to search the flash drive by song, artist and album?

    Hi Triton,
You may try renaming files in your USB flash drive by title of the song first.
    Thanks.

  • How can you set a Firmware Password for Intel Macs?

PPC macs can use the Open Firmware Password utility to protect the computer from someone booting of another drive to access your data http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
How can this same protection be accomplished with Intel-Macs? Intel Macs use a different fireware/boot process, so OFP above doesn't work. according to the apple article above, it can be done - but it doesn't explain how:
"Intel-based Macintosh computers can be protected by firmware passwords as well. The firmware in an Intel-based computer uses Extended Firmware Interface (EFI) technology"

    all I get is...
    Your Firmware is too old.
The firmware on your machine is too old for Open Firmware Password to function. You will need 4.1.7 or later to use this application. Please visit the Apple website to get the latest firmware update for your system.

  • How do you update the firmware on 1st Gen Airport Extreme in OSX Mountain Lion?

A friend gave me a old but never used 1st Gen Airport Extreme 802.11n WiFi Wireless Base Station.  I have a couple WiFi dead zones in my house and was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots.  During set up the Airport Utility told me that "This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later.  Go to AirPort Service and Support (link) for more information.
I updated the Airport Utility to the latest version (6.2) and I am still getting the same error message and no other option to update it's firmware.  Anyone know of a work around or am I fighting to losing battle here.  I tried to contact Apple support, but when I entered the serial number for the Base Station it said the product was over 5 years old and didn't qualify for support service program.

was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots
Not sure what you mean by "daisy chain".  The AirPort Extreme cannot "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal from the FIOS router if you are planning to do this using wireless only.
You always need at least 2 Apple routers to be able to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only. The Apple routers would not be compatible with FIOS routers for this type of purpose.
If you can connect the AirPort Extreme to the FIOS router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then the AirPOrt could be configured to provide more wireless signal coverage that way. If you cannot run the cable, it might be possible to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send a signal over the existing AC power lines in your home.
When you open AirPort Utility 6.x and a firmware update is available, there is usually a red number next to the AirPort Exreme icon. Click on the red number......or if it does not appear, click on the  AirPort Extreme icon and then hold down the option key on a Mac as you click on the Version number that is is displayed to see more "options".

  • Got a new car and when I plug in my older shuffle it says to check firmware. How do you update the firmware?

Got a new car and when i plug in my older shuffle it ask me to check the firmware. What do I need to do?

It's possible that your new car audio system is not compatible with your older shuffle, or it may not be compatible with shuffles, period.  You should consult the documentation for the car audio system (or its tech support) to check the list of compatible devices.
There is no firmware upgrade for an old shuffle with will make it work, if the car audio system does not support the device.
NOTE:  As an alternative, you can buy an inexpensive USB flash drive.  Maybe you already have one.  Load it with your favorite songs.  Here's one that barely sticks out of the USB port
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33008G/
with several times the storage capacity of a shuffle.  No dangling cable and more resistant to extreme heat/cold, and you can leave it connected to your car audio system.

  • Installing Apple downloads/updates--how do I determine what I need?

After searching for a number of downloads that are referenced in the discussions as possible fixes, I am trying to sort out which I should install on my imac. For instance, I see that the Graphics Update 1.0 and the Time Machine update (addressing the interface with Time Capsule) have helped solve some issues.
Looking at the release date for both these updates, I see that the 10.5.3 combo update, which I installed, is more recent. As a matter of practice, can I assume that the Graphics Update and the Time Machine update are included in the combo update because they were released prior? I looked in the details on the Combo update page, but I didn't see specifics as to what previous downloads it included.
I would like to know how one knows which updates, or other downloads, one should install.
I've had a number of performance issues since installing the combo update. They include:
    -machine running slowly
-many freezes that require shut down
-force quit does not always work
-Time Machine will not find the backup volume after the mac has gone to sleep (this happens with Firewire only, USB seems to work)
In addition to the question of how as a matter of practice to determine which downloads I should install, and how to figure out which downloads/updates I already have after installing a system update such as the Combo 10.5.3, if anyone has any solutions for my list of issues, please comment.
    Thanks,
    HM

  • How do you reinstall OLD firmware 1.0.2 on VISTA

I have seen some links to reinstall old version of firmware but I can't find the relavant section on Windows Vista. I am new so could be me being stupid.
    Any help appreciated.

Remove the latest update from the iTunes/iPod updates folder.
    For Vista, I believe it's C:\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates.
Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically), then click restore. Or simply disconnect your modem from the computer.
You should then be asked if you want to use the previous version of the iPod software.

  • How do you update new firmware, iphone wont

my iphone wont update firmware, any ideas

The update process is through iTunes... but you probably know that. Based on all the current issues with the 2.0 firmware... you might want to wait a few days.
Alot of folks, myself included, have locked the current iPhones up. Just my two cents... but I would wait a couple of days.
    Good Luck...

  • How can I determine what software needs to be installed for images to display in a Safari browser?

    Hi Everyone,
I had to rebaseline my MacBook Pro and I am starting from scratch.  When I open certain webpages in Safari, the images I know should be displayed are not coming up as though I am missing some sort of COTS software.  I do have Adobe Flash installed already but obviously that is not what I need or I would be seeing some images.  I would appreciate any help/suggestions trying to figure out what I need to see images on certain webpages.  My guess is the images are dynamic being flashed across the screen to make people want to buy their products.  Thanks in advance!

Flash likley needs to be updated, web browsers will disable outdated plugins now.
Use this handy checker. and it wouldn't be a bad idea to have more than one web browser on the machine.
