How do you display the capacity/free space for the hard drive on the desktop, under the hard drive icon.... I have seen this done, but I am not seeing any options to do so.... thanks.

How do you set Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) for new Hard Drive?

I have a new hard drive that I'm about to have installed into my iMac. The drive is a WD1001FALS (Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB). The only concern I have is that by all accounts it is a bit louder than some other drives, although everything being relative I don't know what that means to me since I've not heard it run yet.
Still, the 320GB drive currently in the iMac is absolutely inaudible and while I'll make some concessions for speed and size I'd like to minimize the amount of noise coming out of the box. I know that the drive supports Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM), however its default state is "disabled". Is there a way, either through the OS or third party software to enable this feature?

I just wanted to close out this question.
I never received a clear answer but in the end I don't need to use the function. My concern was that a new WD1001FALS would be louder than the OEM 320GB HDD in my iMac to the point that I wouldn't be happy with it. Not wanting to trade speed for quiet I passed on the Green caviar and went for the Black. After living with it for several weeks I can say that it is very quiet and while I don't know if it's measurably louder than the old drive, it's not enough for me to notice (and I'm pretty picky).
So, I'm happy with the drive as-is, case closed.

if your son is set as a child under your Family Share settings you should be able to turn on "Ask permission" for purchases. If you do have that on I don't know why it's not prompting him to ask.
Another way to stop in-app-purchases is to set restriction on his iOS device. (Turn off in-app-purchases under General/Restrictions)

Erratic amount of free space on my hard drive...

Can someone please tell me if they think this is strange, or should I not worry about it.
About a week ago I had 520 gigs of free space on my hard drive (its a 1 TB drive). I decided to defrag it simply because it had been a long time since I had done so. That went off without a hitch. I did not even think to check if the amount of free space had changed afterwards. I then decided to use Disk Utility to 'Erase Free Space'. That ran fine, but afterwards I was shocked to see that I now had 605 gigs (!!!) of free space, meaning either the defrag or the erasing of 'Free Space' freed up some 85 gigs (). Okay, strange I thought, but no complaints here. A couple days went by and I happened to glance at the free space and WOAH, its dropped back down to 570, even though I've added, AT MOST, 5 gigs of photos, music etc. Is it me or does this seem really strange...? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this, reasoning etc...

It is also curious that when you create and save a data file it will report a different size once you open and save it again even without changing contents.

How do you get ITunes to STOP automatically scanning my hard drives for files? I have a number of audio and video files located all over my computer. However, my music folder is located in one place. I only want ITunes to look there to ad music to my IPod? I don't want to add any videos to my IPod however, it automatically scans for this as well. Infact... I don't want ITunes to automatically scan for anything. Why is this doing this?

You can configure iTunes to sync only a subset of your music. Create a playlist in iTunes of the music you want on the iPod, and change the iPod sync settings. More info is here.

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
You'll see Capacity and Available from the Get Info panel.

I need to erase free space on my hard drive. But when I am in disk utility the format and name are pale as is the erase free space button so I cannot erase free space.

My start up disk is full. I have been through my computer and erased a lot of music and video to free some space. I then went to disk utility to erase free space and find that the erase free space button is pale and therefore won't work. Nor can I select or deselect MacOS extended journaled.
Advice please?!

Recovering Disk Space
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files or purchase a lager disk or SSD (see below). You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again. More headroom is better. If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
- Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
Empty the Trash.
- Start iPhoto.
Empty its trash.
Restart.
- Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart the computer.
As soon as you hear the chime press and hold the right shift key.
Be patient. Hold it down until you see the Apple icon.
Empty the trash.
Restart in normal mode.
- Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
    Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
    Select "Library" from the drop down menu.
    Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
    Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
- Empty the Trash.
- Restart.
- Re-index your system disk (Macintosh HD):

Time Machine Snapshots:
If your disk is 80% full that is normal. Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots. To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup. Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions. You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files. Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk. Use ODS again to find them. As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive. Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s). Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing. I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it. I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????" Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this. Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash
Check and make sure that your backup system is backing up yor external drive

Should we be leaving some free space on iPod hard drives?

I'm curious about this. Just recently bought a used 40 GB iPod (4th Gen.) and have loaded it nearly full. I just wondered if I should feel free to fill it up until there's essentially no space left, or if I'm better off to leave some open space on its hard drive. I've heard that, in general, the stability of a hard drive decreases if you push it to its capacity, so I'm trying to leave about half of a gig free. Just wondering if anybody has a more informed viewpoint. Thanks!

Personally speaking, I've never found it makes the
slightest bit of difference whether my iPods are full
to capacity or not (and I've owned 7).
Do you mean this in a good or bad way? Do you mean that you've had hard drive problems whether they're full or not? Or do you mean that they've all been reliable either way?

Erase Free Space vs Reformat Hard Drive

I am getting ready to sell my computer. In the past I have had troubles when I reformatted my hard and then reinstalled the OS. If I use "Erase Free Space" from the Disk Utility and choose 7 pass overwrite should I be confident that all deleted personal information will be securely removed?

It would be simpler, not to mention much, much faster, to do an Erase and Install of OS X. If you've had problems with the hard drive in the past, then I suggest doing the following before installing:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the OS X installation. When the installation has completed DO NOT RESTART. Instead simply shut down the computer. When the new owner starts up the computer it will automatically start up in the Setup Assistant as if new out of the box.

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.

Before Mavericks there used to be a little reading in the bottom of a finder window telling you how much space was available in whatever drive you were currently viewing, now i have to click get info every time, is there a quicker way?

You may have the Status Bar hidden Peter. With the Finder open, click on View in the menu bar and then select Show Status Bar. You should now see the space available for a selected drive at the bottom of the Finder window.

Use a Windows computer to copy all the files from that external and then format it either Fat32 or exFAT, I suggest FAT32 if you don't have any Files over 4GBs in size. Once that is done you can then Copy/Move those files back to the external and then connect it to your Mac. Mac OS X can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT formatted drives. So you can then use it to store other files on fro your Mac.
But you need a Dedicated, Indepentant, Separate external for Time Machine backups and that drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a Partition table of GUID.
