How do you filter attachements?

Hello all,
I was hoping to get some feedback how you(your org) deals with attachment filtering. Currently we simply drop messages with things like .exe, .url etc... The problem is users never know they were sent a message. I've though about attachment stripping, but read in a previous thread that doing this essentially bypasses the Outbreak filters. Then if there is an outbreak users get hammered with what looks like spam.
I'm considering sending a bounce to the sender, but then you've got problems with spoofed addresses etc.
So what's the general opinion on the best way to handle filtered attachments? (And please, I don't want to hear it depends on your organization)

What I currently do is strip the attachment. If it is a non-business email then the users know our company policy covers this.
For some attachments, like non-business movies, etc., I set a rule to a filter to strip the attachment but let the mail through so the user knows he got an email but he can't watch a 10MB movie of some wedding dance that's been in the news.
Trouble is the first time such an email arrives it's not possible to create a filter on the fly and apply it to that email, only the ones that come after. So the first email is dropped. I've asked for this as a feature request, hopefully it will come sooner or later.
All this said I have custom filters to just drop emails, especially chain mails whenever possible. It does depend on your organization and how much you (the manager) control.

    I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Does this involve iPhoto somehow? How did they get attached?

  • Distributed forms, how do you filter duplicate data?

    When using Distributed forms, how do you filter the returning data for when someone submits the form twice with a minor change?  Example, they submit the form with a mailing address and typed the city name wrong, then they resubmitted with the corrected name.  The "Response" window shows as 2 separate entries.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated. Information about returning distributed data is very hard to find... Thanks.

    I used to spent a great deal of time on Apple Discussions, but having been away for a couple of years I see there have been major changes. As a result, I'm finding it hard to manage tasks that used to be easy, & I would appreciate some help with these questions so that I can go back to helping others…
    1) How do you filter "Content" by groups? I used to be able to select the group I was particularly interested in (usually Logic Pro). I see that if a recent question has been asked in a group, I can click on the name of that group — but if no questions have been asked in the last few hours, this would mean page after page of scrolling…
    2) Someone answered another question I asked yesterday. I wanted to thank them & to mark the question as answered. But all I could see was the "Helpful" link (which unfortunately I clicked on before I realised it wasn't the same as the old "Answered" link). I can't see how to mark the reply as THE ANSWER, I can't see how to mark the question as answered, & I can't see any way of replying to the answer. The only text field available is to reply to myself, which seems daft — & yes, I AM logged in.
    (I can't quite believe how hard it is to find out this stuff. I recall a certain meeting where the object of the exercise was to make the interface more accessible, not more opaque…)

  • How do you filter for photos with develop adjustments?

    I wanted to put this information out there, because it was difficult for me to find an answer to the question of "how do you quickly filter for photos that have develop adjustments?"
    Some earlier posts in this forum observe that a smart collection has the ability to filter files wherein "has adjustments" is "true." Yes, it can do that. And it can also add in a "date" parameter for more specific targeting. But it cannot simply say, "in the current folder," or "in the selected folder." And frankly, that's the exact situation when I need to filter down to the files I want: I'm in a folder—typically the current folder that I've just imported—and I've done a smattering of develop adjustments. Now, I want to quickly select just those images for export. Can't be done, not with a Smart Collection, anyway.
    But Lightroom is nothing if not deep, and if you approach the problem from a filtering standpoint, it will eventually get you there—but the solution is very non-obvious. Expose the filter bar, with your favorite preset: camera info, default columns... it doesn't really matter. Hover over the header bar and to the far right will become visible the "add column" widget. Add a column. From the pop-up menu on the name will come a long list of options, the second-to-last of which is "develop preset." Once that's in place, click on "custom." Save your current settings as a new preset and give it a descriptive name like "adjusted images."
    Now, when you're in your current—or any—folder, just click on "metadata" in the filter bar, and your custom preset will be in effect: any images that you've worked on will be selected. It's a fast, one-click selection.
    If there's another way of doing this (keep in mind it's for the selected or current folder only), let me know. It's such a seemingly desirable action that I'm kind of astounded there's no built-in or easy or obvious way to do it... or that no photographer has requested it.

    I am honored to have a response from Rikk "MVP" Flohr, and I do readily agree that your approach is one way to approach the issue. It puts the relevant images in a discrete area that is easy to access. However (this is where I look a gift horse in the mouth) I find "sorts" a bit underwhelming in comparison to "filtering." Two problems: first, the sort still does not 'clear your deck' of unwanted images. You still have to squint at the badges and carefully select the range at the top (or bottom). Mistakes can be made (and I would be the first to make them). Second, the sort command is "sticky," meaning that folder will always have that sort unless you undo it. In general, I think most photographers want to see a folder's images sorted by capture time, so they can easily glance to the beginning, middle, and end of the shoot. With my method, once you click out of the folder, the filter is taken away and you're back to normal.
    I do understand that Lightroom wants me to flag my images with rankings or stars or colors or dancing beavers or what-have-you. But in this particular situation, that's an extra step. If I've applied development adjustments, it's already done. Why shouldn't I be able to choose "Select Developed Photos" from the Edit menu, right under "Select Flagged Photos"?

  • I keep getting exact duplicate songs in playlists and libraries, how can you filter this out when upgrading these lists, or sync to the same device again? And how to do it without going through each and every P'list or Library ?

    I have Windows XP-Pro SP3, the latest upgrades of Three media players, iTunes being the default player. I keep getting duplicates in playlists, libraries etc., of the same version of song. Everytime i make a change or renew my media to device or SYNC it wants to add duplicates to the computer disk, lists etc. Can you filter out same copies without having to edit each and every song, which in my case is quite large. For instance if you want to convert all mpeg, or mp4-a files to AAC you will end up with duplicates of each file type. Or you sync to an ipod, the library adds to itself---- including copies of songs already in it, if in a different file version.

    This will always duplicate files within iTunes.  I need to ask why you're doing this conversion - all formats are compatible with iTunes, and conversion between mp3 and AAC will always involve some loss of quality.

  • How Do You Filter, Or Stop Automatic Updates From Windows or HP to a Windows 8, 2000 Notebook PC.

    I would like to know how I can see automatic updates from Windows or HP before they go into my computer?  The reason is, is that these auto updates mess up my IE and my printer software.  I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC, Windows 8, 64 bit.  I would like to be able to filter or see these updates before they go in my computer.  Is there anything I can do, or a setting I can set?

    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP 2000 Notebook and issues  Microsoft updates. Here is a fix from Microsoft.
    Type Update in the Start Menu search box, select Windows Update from the top of the menu and in Windows Update select Change Settings on the left side of the window.

  • How do you filter out moving objects in a movie?

    Hello!
    I'v searched the internet for solutions to this but I cann't find any.
    Im prittie new and I need to make a house on fire while two guys (one is me)
    will be walking away from it, towards the camera.
    I want to filter out these two guys and only apply fire and flames to the house itself!
    To do this I used Time Diffrence and tried to isolate the guy using Fast Blur and Luma Key
    but Im prittie lost.. Nothing works and I really need guidence
    Do you know a trick to use?
    I cant do greenscreening as the green background would cost a fortune..
    But isn't there anyway to filter out moving objects?

    I'm not sure that you totally get the process. This kind of shot requires at least 3 elements or plates. These three plates become three layers in After Effects. The bottom layer would be the Background Plate which is a shot of the house without any actors in the shot. The next plate would be the Effect Plate or Fire Plate which could be any shot you can get or generate through plug-ins of flames. The top layer would be your Foreground Plate or your two actors.
    Now that you know what you need you can plan your shoot. The background plate is easy. Just set the camera on a tripod and lock it off. NO zooming. No panning, No change of focus. The foreground plate is also easy. You don't have to green screen the entire set, all you need to do is to put a green screen behind your actors. I do this kind of thing all the time using a 6' X 6' (sometimes smaller) green screen (or blue or red or purple) made of fabric and stretched over a frame that I made from 1/2" EMT electrical conduit and 4 90º elbow connectors for less than $20 at Home Depot or Lowes. You get a couple of assistants to walk behind your actors holding the green screen behind them. If you need to include their feet they can be easily rotoscoped out later and you can garbage matte everything else. If it's impossible to green screen the shot then you are stuck with roto, but that's much easier in CS5 using the roto brush. If you use your show with the actors as the background plate roto is even easier because you can hide a multitude of sins by simply feathering the roto and letting the fire light wrap around the actors a bit.
    The fire plate can be purchased footage, or you could shoot a real fire against a black background, or you could create the flames using AE or even a 3D app like Blender (free) or a bunch of other apps.
    Making the shot look real requires a few tricks once you have your clean plates. Fire creates light so you've got to add lighting effects to the background plate to sell the fire. You've also got to wrap light around your actors. Look for tutorials on light wrap for this. You can really help sell the effect if you place some flickering light sources behind and to the side of your actors when you shoot the foreground (actors) plate.
    Once you get a handle on these techniques it's fairly easy to make the transition to pulling of this kind of a shot with a hand held camera (now you have to learn motion tracking). On a project I recently completed we had to put a fire in a prop fireplace while actors moved around bringing milk and cookies for Santa. It was all roto and the fire was shot at night with nothing more than a black cloth (Duvetyne) behind the fireplace grate. The final composite was 10 layers and was so totally believable that no one questions the shot.
    The layers were from top to bottom, reflection in grandmas glasses, light wrap, actors (roto of original background plate), fire flicker layer, color mask layer (more orange around fire, fire glow layer, fire layer in Add mode, second fire layer in screen mode, third fire layer Luma keyed, and finally the original plate which contained all the actors, carefully lit with flickering firelight simulated by dangling a stick with fabric cut into 1/2 inch wide strips about one foot long in front of a orange gelled light behind and to the right of  the actors.

  • How do you filter search results?

    We have a search button on our website that does a sitewide search, and I was wondering how you get about making it so that the search results display in date order (most recent items first). At the moment it seems to display things at random, with items as old as 2005 being listed first. Can anyone help please?

    I'll share my newly found work around.
    I use this.  I put a huge number in the resultsPerPage argument and then process the results with a JS sorting plugin like this: http://datatables.net/index
    {module_searchresults,_blank,100000}
    That plugin it particular is better than the built in functionality as it has better pagination and can sort columns if you display it in a table.
    I have to warn you, this is not something someone can do with out good working knowledge of HTML & JS/Jquery.

  • How do you permanently attach a stamp

    I need to know how to may a stamp permanent on a PDF, so it's a part of it that will print and one cannot easily remove.
    Currently, when I add a stamp, it doesn't print at all.
    Have a similar issue with filled in forms, check boxes, etc., where I'd like to make them permanent. Like being able to create a PDF from a PDF.

    To print form fields or comment/markup annotations --
    In the Print dialog, upper right region - observe "Comments and Forms" - it has an associated drop-down menu.
    Select Documents and Markups or Documents and Stamps or Form Fields Only or go with the default "Document".
    To put the annotations into the PDF page content you must flatten them. Acrobat Pro provides Preflights which can be used to flatten form fields or annotations. Pro's Optimizer feature can also be used to flatten form fields. Alternatively there are some "flatten" scripts available (Dave M's Acrobat Ninja blog or at pdfscripting's site).

    Hi Experts,
    I have a query where I need to filter based on data that may be contained in the object (data is free form text). How do I put that into either a variable or defualt value?
    Example -

    CDEF

    Thanks for the answers but it doesn't seem to be working. We are on BI 7.0. When I choose the Selection Option and then either enter in 1*** into the selection screen or in the default entry I get an error. I don't see a 'contains pattern' either. Do I need to use another symbol?
