How do you find what files are open?

I have a disk utility that needs to unmount my secondary drive but it is unable to stating there are open files. I know there is a UNIX command that shows what files are open but I can't find the command. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
The command you are after is lsof. Read the manual to find out about the options (there are an awful lot, but most of them you won't need).

  • How do you tell which files are open in bridge cs5?

In adobe bridge for CS2, open files in Photoshop show an icon in the lower right corner of the bridge thumnail. This is really helpful in sorting if you have a lot of files open. I can't figure out how to tell in bridge CS5 which files are open in photoshop. Is there a menu option that controls this??

Thanks for the reply. This is a useful feature but not quite what I need.
I am sorting through 2000 wedding photos. I have maybe 10 versions of the same shot open at a time. I edit, save, and close 2-3 of them. In CS2, I would go back to bridge and I could see the 7 files still open. I could quickly highlight and delete them. I'm trying to find a way to do something similar in CS5 bridge. Right now, I take the ones I'm going to delete and stack them all. But when I go back to bridge to delete them, I have to look at file numbers to see which ones are in the stack that I want to delete. This really slows my work flow. Any suggestions? Can I delete them directly from Photoshop?

De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

    Thanks,

If there is a way to automatically open an attached file in a Mail item, it is not one that I would use, because I want to stay in control of my Mac!  Who is it from, whats in it and so on... To me bad idea but then the choice is yours.

How do I find what computers are tied to my account?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Tied in what way. If you are referring to authorised computers, there isn't a way to see a list. If you are referring to computers and devices associated with your account, you can see a list in your iTunes account settings on your computer.

  • Parental Controls - How do I find what apps are starting for an account?

I turned on Parental Controls for my kids and when they log into their accounts they get a series of dialogs saying "You don't have permission to run <APP>, with Done, Always Allow and Allow Once buttons. Things like GoogleUpdater. None of these apps are in their startup list in System Preferences. How can I find what apps are set to startup for each account?
    - Thanks

Here's a tip from another user that may help you:
"I was running into the same problem trying to find apps for my daughters Iphone 3g running 4.2.1.  What I did was go to the Itunes store through Itunes on my PC, and then went to the bottom of the main page and clicked "Browse." On the browse page I selected, App Store, Games (category), Kids (subcategory), and then a list of apps appears below.
I sorted by date (oldest to newest) by right-clicking next to "price" and choosing "release date" on the menu that pops up. The date created field will then be showing, which you can click on to sort newest to oldest or oldest to newest.  I downloaded a bunch of free apps starting from the oldest (by name - you don't have much else to go on).  Of the 30 or so I added to my Itunes, about 27 of them were compatible with 4.2.1.
This is defintely not a perfect way of finding apps, but after spending a lot of time searching for a better way this was the best I could come up with."

  • HT1918 how do you know what computers are authorized to use home share before i delete a computer

how do you know what computers are authorzed to use an I tune account?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
There is no way to view a list of authorised computers. You can only tell a computer is authorised from that computer itself, from the store menu in iTunes.

There's no list available from your end; you need to go to each you think might be and check.

  • How do you determine what shows are in free video on demand?

How do you determine what to include in the free on-demand shows?  The Mentalist was always there before but is no longer.  This is especially important for shows like the Mentalist and The Good Wife which come on Sunday nights after sports events.  Even if I set my DVR to record 60 minutes over it doesn't always catch the entire episode.  Would also like to see Person of Interest  there.   And last but not least, you should have a way for people to access netflix or other services from your service.

If you go to BROWSE then the FREE folder you will find that everything in there is free viewing. If you go elsewhere and try to watch a paid show, you will get a prompt asking you to purchase. It also shows the amount of the movie before purchase.

  • How do I find what jars are being used...?

    Hi all,
I'm wondering if any of you could help me. I am looking for a method or tool that helps to find what library jars are being used within an application to try and help me erradicate unneccesary files since I find myself in a scenario similar to below. . .
Obviously over time an application grows and you may being in a lot of libraries to provide functionality as you go. You may then find a better way of doing something or that part of code may be redundant, so the referencing class is removed, BUT the jar isn't removed from the application at the same time.
Several years down the line your lib directory looks like it contains nearly every jar created sits in there, and you application is now being shipped out on DVD to cope with all the libraries!
So, is there a tool or way (except removing them to see it anything breaks!) to check what jars are actually being referenced within an application?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Cheers,

Start java with the -verbose option and grep the output for lines starting with "[Opened". This will give you a list of all opened jar files.
Bear in mind, that classes are loaded lazy, that is: only when they are referenced for the first time.

  • How can you see what computers are authorized with my account?

Good afternoon. I installed iTunes on my desktop computer at home because I began creating a music library. My first original install was on my laptop and then I decided to add iTunes to my desktop. When I authorized iTunes on my desktop it said it was the third computer that is authorized to play content purchased with this Apple ID.
How do I find out where else I have authorized iTunes? Is there a way in which a person can find out? Does my iTouch count as one?
If I rest the computers authorization will it delete my music library if I did that? I know you can only do it once a year. I am afraid someone else will use my account.
    Thank You

In order to see which devices are authorized on your account:
    Open iTunes
    Click Store
    Click Account
    Click View Account
    Enter your password
Look in the second section iTunes in the Cloud
To the far right you'll see Manage Devices
Once it's clicked you will see all of the devices currently authorized in iTunes/on your account
I was going to say, "Hope this helps," but based on the above, I'm pretty sure it did!
    Thanks guys...

  • The Science Behind Mixing: HOW do you decide what speakers are right?

    Hey guys,
Hoping you could shed light on how a sound engineer chooses the levels when mixing a song?
I know this is a total loaded question...but at least this can give you some direction on what I'm looking for in the answer:
My buddy and I are playing the music from M-Audio BX5a speakers.
With somethings, they sound great on there...
but then we go listen to them in the car, and the mix is wayyy off....
Often times the off part is the bass. It's hard to determine with the BX5a's if the Bass is at a good level, or if it's going to totally overwhelm all the instrumentals. (we're doing orchestral hip-hop by the way)
Any advice? Do we just need new speakers?
    Thanks!
    --Sean

Lots of good, sound advice here...
I think the biggest thing you can do, which may yield the quickest satisfactory results, will be, as has already been mentioned, to A/B your mixes with a CD that is similar in style/content.
Then, as you listen to your mixes in multiple environments, make sure you A/B in those listening environment as well. You'll learn nothing if you don't constantly make comparisons on ALL the systems you are listening on.
Beyond that, treating your mix room is a crucial thing to do. The company Auralex offers a free service, where you download a sweepable sine wave that sweeps 20Hz to 20kHz. Using the most neutral microphone in your arsenal, you record that sweep by placing your mic between your speakers. You send this file back to them, and they can tell you where the worst deficiencies are in your room.
Granted, this is a general observation, and obviously they will make suggestions to room treatments, in hopes you will buy their products. But at the very least, it will tell you what to be aware of when mixing.

I have 3 sets of monitors from which to constantly be checking my mixes. Dynaudio BM6's, Yamaha NS-10's, and Avatone's. I am very familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of each... I know what frequencies should (or shouldn't) be popping out on each, etc...
I have been mixing for over 20 years. I'll let you know when I master it
