How do you free up memory?
How do you free up memory on an iPad? My iPad won't open any application until I free up memory.
Carolyn, I don't think you are correct. System memory will run out much sooner than storage space. I also seek to free system memory on my iPad since apps run much more reliably when I clear out any other resident programs from the background.
Of great personal concern is the fact that Apple has apparently barred system information utilities from offering "memory clear" buttons. I really despise having to go into Springboard and manually delete apps one by one. And, if the rumors are correct, then I despise the App Store policies even more.
Usually, when I have to kill background apps, it's because I need system memory cleared RIGHT NOW. Instead of barring Clear buttons outright, why not issue guidelines on which processes are considered vital, thus leaving them intact in case of Clear?

how do you free up disk space on macbook pro 2013 model to upgrade and update software
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located. -
How do you free space on the startup disk
how do you free space on the startup disk
If your disk is 80% full that is normal. Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots. To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup.
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files. You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again. More headroom is better. If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
- Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
- Empty the trash.
- Start iPhoto, empty its trash and restart the computer.
Deleting files:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions. You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second one onto which you will offload some files.
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first. Delete with caution and do not delete any system files. Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Moving files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk. Use ODS again to find them.
As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive. Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s). Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

How do you add more memory to a macbook circa 2007
how do you add memory to a macbook mid-2007?
>If you have a Mid 2007 MacBook, that can use up to 3GB RAM.
Since that model can use an odd number RAM capacity upgrade, with
a total of 3GB between two memory slot locations, you could put one
piece of RAM of 1-GB in a slot, and in the other, a 2-GB RAM chip...
Maximum Memory: 3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots: 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
•MacBook: How to remove or install memory

Maximum Memory: 6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots: 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Recommendations have been to check the spec and model computer
against the on-site parts suggestions for the computer model identifier
at OWC macsales.com, or check into Crucial.com for specific match
based on their information. OWC tends to be an easier way if you know
the MacBook model identifier, and if yours actually is the Mid-2007 vs
another different one. The Late-2007 can use up to 6GB RAM.
•The identifiers for Mid-2007 MacBook 13-inch:
Introduced May 2007
Discontinued November 2007
Model Identifier MacBook2,1
Model Number A1181
EMC 2139
Order Number MB061LL/A (White), MB062LL/A (White), MB063LL/A (Black)
•The identifiers for Late-2007 MacBook 13-inch:
Introduced November 2007
Discontinued February 2008
Model Identifier MacBook3,1
Model Number A1181
EMC 2200
Order Number MB061LL/B (White), MB062LL/B (White), MB063LL/B (Black)
{as you may notice, some identification numbers are recycled; for confusion sake}
Hopefully this helps somewhat.
Good luck & happy computing!

How do you install unmatched memory in macbooks?

HT4433 How do you stop the memory utility message?
How do you get rid of the memory utility message received upon startup regarding memory is in the correct slots?
You have to log in as a user named "root." Here's how to turn on the root user account...
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528
While you're at it, turn of auto login, if you have it enabled. You can turn it back on later, if you want. Once you've done that, reboot your Mac, log in as "root" with the password that you entered earlier. Once it finishes rebooting, just click on OK when the Memory Slot Utility pops up again.
Now reboot again, and log in under your usual username. The Memory Slot Utility should be gone now. It's a good idea to go back like you did to "Enable Root User" and choose Disable this time. You can do lots of really bad things as root if you don't know what you're doing.
I had the same thing happen to me after upgrading my RAM from 3G to 16G. -

How do you free memory when applet ends?
I have an applet that uses 4 jframes. Any of the frames are set to call both stop() and destroy() whenever user clicks "Exit" or "X" in upper right corner of a frame.
The applet destroy() method does the following:
myAOS32001Frame = null;
myAOS32002Frame = null;
myAOS32003Frame = null;
myAOS32004Frame = null;
myMemoryChangeThread.stop();
try {
URL endedURL = new URL(this.getCodeBase(), "AOS320acEnded.html");
this.getAppletContext().showDocument(endedURL);
} // try
catch (MalformedURLException urlexc) {
urlexc.printStackTrace();
} // catch
This doesn't free up any memory at all. Only when the user closes the browser altogether does the memory free up.
Do I have to set EVERY object (those within frames) to null? How do I set the main applet object (the JApplet class instance) to null (not just its child frames)? Should the garbage collector be run one last time? In what order should all these things occur?
If every object needs to be set to null, anybody have a nice tidbit of code that loops through array of components (and properties) or something and sets them to null?
Thanks.Thank you both for the tips. They were helpful.
Now my mission is to make the applet as small as possible. It appears the base JVM occupies about 18MB of memory initially, and then my applet uses 12MB more (at times), and the JVM "reserves" about 10MB more.
The only part under my control is the 12MB, it appears, and I'd be interested in general tips to make that as small as possible (maybe by using certain variable types instead of ones currently used, etc.). But I'll ask that in a different thread. -
Java Card Memory Managament: How do you free-up allocated memory?
I have a problem with java card memory management, that causes the applet to hang. I think the java card runs out of RAM when my applet runs for several iterations or process() calls. My program requires significant size of bytes for each APDU command to be sent. (around 100-250 bytes, for each apdu.sendBytes() call).
I use a temporary byte array buffer that will contain the APDU command to be sent, declared as:
private byte [] tmpBuff;Before each process() call, the tmBuff is initialized and contains a new byte array containing the APDU command to be sent. (array size around 100-250 bytes).
tmpBuff = new byte[] {0x00, ... } On the process() call, the tmpBuff is copied to APDU and sendBytes() function is called. The tmpBuff byte array is reinitialized after every process() call to contain the next command. After about 20 successful commands by the process() call, the applet seems to ran out of RAM and hangs.
I suspect, that when tmpBuff is reinitialized before each process() call, the Java Card garbage collector does now free-up the memory that was used for the previous tmpBuff byte array initialization.
Is there a way to reclaim the memory allocated for tmpBuff after it has been initialized?
Or maybe call the Java card garbage collector?Cenon,
Generally speaking, the new keywork is a bad idea outside the install method or constructors as the JCRE is not guarenteed to have a garbage collector (and if it does, has to be called explicitly by JCSystem.requestObjectDeletion(); This however is slow.
A better option may be to use memory more efficiently than to rely on garbage collection. A way of doing this would be to have an instance variable that is initialised once and reused. This allows you to use either a transient or persistent array.
public class TestApplet extends Applet {
private final static short BUFFER_SIZE = (short) 300;
private final byte[] buffer;
private TestApplet() {
// only have one of the following not commented out
/* persistent buffer */
// buffer = new byte[BUFFER_SIZE];
/* transient buffer (much faster) */
buffer = JCSystem.makeTransientByteArray(BUFFER_SIZE, JCSystem.CLEAR_ON_DESELECT);
public static void install(byte[] bArray, short bOffset, byte bLength) {
// GP-compliant JavaCard applet registration
new TestApplet().register(bArray, (short) (bOffset + 1), bArray[bOffset]);
public void process(APDU apdu) {
// Good practice: Return 9000 on SELECT
if (selectingApplet()) {
return;
// do some work here with buffer
}In the above code you would be able to use the buffer to build the command and you will not have a memory leak.
Cheers,
Shane

How to decrease "Free (freelist)" memory and allow the ARC cache to use it?
Hello,
I have a solaris express server that will be primarily used for storage. As such cache usage maximization is important. It appears however that a big chunk of the memory is not been consumed, and remains "Free Free". There must be a tunable to allow this memory to be consumed, and grow the Arc Cache.
Currently it shows (via arc_summary.pl and arcstat.pl) that it's however arround 39GB. It won't grow beyond that point. Here's memstat

Your computer sounds like it's a few years old, Apple would NOT stock RAM for it. I'd recommend OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. Both are reputable, have good service and very competitive prices. OWC has great support, you can do an online chat with them and they can answer any questions you may have. -
How do you free up memories?
I was dumbfounded when I learned that you cannot uninstall programs from Mac. Which means even if you delete unwanted programs, you are still leaving registry files and temp files associated with the program. I bought this mac 3 days ago and have not installed anything other than Office 2004 for Mac. I currently have 35 gigs free which means 60-35 = 25. 25 gigs are being used. ON WHAT????????
HD space is reported differently by the system than the HD manufacturers report it. The manufacturers say 1GB is 1 billion bytes while a GB is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes. Multiply those "missing" bytes by the number of GB on the HD and you will see the "lost" capacity. This is about 4.5GB.
It is the same with PCs so this is not a Mac issue.
Seondly, you have about 14GB of stuff pre-installed on your Mac by Apple. You can remove anything that is there without issue.
There is no registry like in Windows, and whoever told you that you cannot uninstall anything was just plain wrong. If the app comes with an uninstaller, use it. If not, then drag and drop the app icon to the trash and empty it. If you want to use Spotlight to find the pref files that may be left behind, you can get everything.
I see that you are a new Mac user and have poste several questions. Switching from Windows can be a little unnerving, but don't worry - it will get easier as you become more familiar with it. In the meantime, we are here for any questions that you might have. -
