  • How do you change the program ALL files of a type open with?

Hello. I run Parallels Desktop for Mac on this system. Since I upgraded to v3, OS X wants to open my Mac Word/Excel/Etc... files using the MS Office installed in windows XP from PD. I don't always have PD running, and do not want it to start up to use the programs on it. I know, not a Mac problem... But, my question is this:
Is there a way to change the program that ALL files of a certain type (ex: pdf, doc, txt, etc...) will start? I have tried the OPT+RT CLICK which says to ALWAYS open this file with xxx.... but that only flags that single file. I want every file that I ever open anywhere on my system/network to use the program I specify. This is simple to do in Win XP, and I'm guessing there's a way to do it in OS X.
    Help/information appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Scott
    MacPro Quad Xeon 3.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   16 GB RAM - 1TB Internal RAID1

Well, with the program Onyx, I've found that LaunchServices database is the culprit. To fix this I just pick a type of file I want to change. Right click the file, choose get info, and change the program it opens with, then click the change all button. Done!
    Cool.

  • How do I prevent sharing a text file by different users

    Hello,
I am using LV8.6.1 and writing this application that read and write to a text file. The application is being used by many users at different sites and I want to prevent writing to the text file when other user is already using it (reading or writing to it). The other user should only be able to use it when it's not being read or getting written.
Any suggestions? I know LV file function 'Set Permissions' won't work. I need a file attribute that tells that the file is open, so don't use it.

I think the only real obtion is one I've seen some other programs use.
Create a lock file in the same directory.
    1.  You want to open myfile.txt.
    2.  Your program looks to see if myfile.lck is present.  (Same filename, just the extension is different)
    3.  If it is present, you don't open the file or you give a warning.
    4.  If it is not present, you create a myfile.lck file.  It could be a small text file.  Perhaps you place in it the user name of the person who is opening the file.
    5.  When your VI is done with the file and "closes" it, your VI deletes the myfile.lck file.
So the presence of the myfile.lck file indicates the file is being used.
The absence of the myfile.lck indicates the file is available to be used.
The only risk is if somehow the person who "takes out" the file somehow ends their application unexpectedly and the .lck file doesn't get deleted even though they are done.  You would need to manually go in and delete the .lck file.  But username data in the .lck could help determine who had the file last and you could confirm if they are really using it or not.  Putting the filedate in the warning information would help determine if it was a recent lock, or an old lock that is likely stale.

  • How can you gain access to your mac if you forget the password

I need help accessing my computor because I forgot my username

Look below your /Users/username/ folder, the one with the House icon. The name is your username.
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • How do you restrict access of a pdf to one user at a time?

I need to put pdf's on a shared work server so that users can make their own individual comments on them, and so collate all corrections for me to then pick up in one pdf.
Question is, can I restrict the pdf in some way that prevents it from opening if another user has it open and is in the process of making their comments on it?
    Thanks

That's not a good way to do that. You should look into Acrobat's Shared
    Review features.

  • How do you login to OS X server as different user?

    Hi All,
I have an OS X server running 10.4.10. I've never had this problem when connecting to it with Tiger clients.
With Leopard clients, I'm trying to login as administrator. There's no way to do it. I don't show any connected servers (or mounted shares) and when I choose "Connect to Server" it shows the Server Address IP dialog as usual, but once you click OK, it brings up the Shares dialog box with share only available to standard users.
In the old days, once I chose the IP for a server, it would give me the name and password dialog box and I'd put in the credentials for whoever and get the correct shares dialog. Now I can't get to the name and password dialog, and no shares are mounted.
I've tried holding down all kinds of key combinations, but if there's one that does it, I can't find it.
    Please help.
BTW - another topic that doesn't even come close to showing up in Apple's kbase.
    Thanks. Mike.

Glad you got it sorted. I didn't realize you weren't on a network with a DNS or I'm sure someone would have suggested using the IP address.
As to Bonjour, one correction about a misunderstanding. Bonjour (AKA zero-configuration networking) is still TCP/IP. What it is is a protocol that runs on TCP and provides name to address translation without a DNS server, and service discovery without a directory server. What that means in practical terms is that, as was the case with old AppleTalk networks, you can see and use services and devices by name rather than having to know their IP addresses. If you're familiar with Windows networks, it's similar to the service provided by WINS or Active Directory but doesn't require a central server. You can get a more thorough explanation here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software)
A Bonjour-capable device or service will almost always have a feature that allows you to name the device using whatever you like. That device/service will then advertise using that name, so when you browse on your system, you see the name and can select the device/service as appropriate. Only if no name has been assigned by the user, or the device doesn't support Bonjour, do you see the "random character" names. And of course if the name given to the device doesn't make sense to you, that won't help either.
If you have a lot of printers on the network, it may be too difficult to get everyone to name them (for those that support Bonjour), so it may not help you select printers. But you can still name things that you control so that you can connect to those more easily. But connecting via TCP/IP addresses is of course an option. The difficulty there arises when IP addresses are assigned via DCHP or self-assigned, as those IP addresses can change when the system is restarted.
    Hope this helps.
PS: Apple techs will never respond here. It's all users helping users. You may see Apple employees post from time to time, but when they do it's as private users, not Apple employees. They're just required to identify, via an Apple logo under their name at left, as Apple employees so as to not mislead anyone.

  • How can my replacement gain access to all the files on my work computer

I am retiring from my place of employment after 14 years on the job--my choice as I've reached retirement age.  I've been a Mac guy for over 5 years now and my replacment is inheriting my computer, a Mac Pro with a 2TB hard drive I added a couple of years ago when I outgrew the original 750GB drive (which is still installed).  I use Mail which has probably 100,000 stored messages, and all of my documents...tons of them.  My replacement needs to take over the machine and "make it hers" but she will still need to have access to all my "stuff" to continue in the position...all my mail, calendar, address book, and documents for MS Office 2011, Adobe CS programs, etc.
I went to the users part of system preferences today and added her as a new identity and as an administrator, but it gives here a "virgin" finder, without all the additions I had put in the sidebar of my finder, etc.  In fact it defaulted to the original "Macintosh HD" which I had nearly filled until I added the second hard drive, the one that is 2TB in size.
Is there a way to configure the Mac Pro (it uses Lion and is too old to upgrade to Mountail Lion) so that she can gain access to all of my "stuff"?

You have to be in a country to use its store - you will need to be in the US and have a US billing address on your account to be able to use the US store (that applies to buying and redownloading).
You can use iTunes Match in South Africa, do you not have a backup copy of all of your US iTunes purchases so that you can subscribe to it and upload those that aren't in the South African store to it ?

Didn't the link to contact the iTunes Store staff in the 'Additional Information' section of that article work for you? If you don't already have a valid rescue email address, only Apple itself can reset the questions.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Yes you will need to NAT at some point to go from private to public address space. Here is a basic configuration if you are interested:
    interface F8
    ip nat inside
    interface G0
    ip nat outside
    ip access-list standard NAT

Older Macs with a single Harddrive would simply expand OS management on the drive, and I think I understand the new Fusion Drive to do just that, but how do I get this product that I spent a great deal of money on to be more than a pretty screen?

I was confused by this statement
It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.
OS X manages ram and when you run out, it create swapfiles to extend your ram on the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). The OS itself, takes about 16 gig of space and that too resides on the HDD.  Your 16 gig of RAM is really a temporary space that holds things from the HDD so the processor can work on them.  There is no design flaw between your ram and HDD.  Something else is going on and there are a lot of smart people here to help you figure out what that "something else" is.
I would do three things.  First I would create a backup, backups are important.  Second, I would reboot into recovery and repair my HDD.  Lastly while still booted in recovery I would repair permissions.
Can you capture a screen shot of the exact error you are getting?

  • How do you save a jepeg scanned file to email it?

I scanned a document and the mac saved it as a jpeg file in photosmart utility (colorsync utility?).  I could not email it as an attachment,  and I could not save it as a different type of file.  I could not copy the file to paste it as a word document.  How do you save a jpeg scanned file to email it?

I scanned the document on an hp injet printer and it was all automatically done by the laptop.  I didn't use image capture, that I know of.  I don't know what that is, or how to utilize it to scan the pages.  I scanned about 10 pages and they went into a folder called scanner output.  I was able to attach that to the email, but then the email could not be sent.  The email tries to send it, then after about 7-8 minutes I get a message that says:
"Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered."

That's handy, because I can run gmail and Chrome too.
Ok, I sent myself a PDF attachment. I'm going to go step by step through what happened
to me, and you can tell me where your experience becomes different.
    1. The email shows a preview of the top part of page 1 for the attachment.
    2. I hover over the preview and I get two icons, "Download" and "Save to drive".
    3. I click Download.
    4. The attachment downloads and I see it in the status bar.
    5. I click on the document in the status bar. It opens to page 1, but I can use the
scroll bar to read all of the pages.
    6. I hover in the bottom right of the page, until Chrome's PDF toolbar appears.
    7. I click the save icon.
    8. I save the file to my desktop.
    9. I open the file from my desktop. It also has all pages.

Is this a particular sender, or all of your attchments?  Google winmail.dat and you will see a number of returns that can explain this, but in short, this is the way some e mail providers deal with attachments.  If all of your e mail is coming that way, you need to change a setting on your isp set up.  Perhaps stary here...
