How do you get files off a hard disk

I had this old macbook from 2007. It recently died on me but I want to get the flies and pictures off it. I now have a imac which a back up reguraly but would still like my old files. I have dicided not to ask a professional as he told me that he would charge per file and I only want a few.

Heres a detailed guide that shows you exactly how and how easy it us to remove the hard drive. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Hard+Drive+Replacement/514
As was mentioned above buy an inexpensive enclosure like this http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-External-Aluminum-Enclosure/dp/B00E362W9O /ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392581711&sr=8-1&keywords=2.5%22+hard+drive+enclosure and you'll have access to all of your files.

  • When/how do you move files off of Hard Drive to make new room.

Maybe this is simple; I understand so far that you can choose the Library folder for iTunes and that that is the source of all songs, album cover art, everything that iTunes needs to display all the information for tunes. Please correct me if I am wrong on that.
When the directory fills up to the point that it is taking over your startup drive, then the iTunes library folder can be moved to an external backup drive and iTunes can start up fresh, empty, and ready to receive new songs. Also, Please correct me if that is not correct.
How many songs do you contain in iTunes before you consider it is too unwieldy and time to start fresh?
I've never done this before, new first-time iPod user here, and would like some pointers on how to handle this.
    Thanks In Advance,
    Ken

You can move it but you do not need to "start fresh".
Just move the folder to the external drive and use it for everything.
No need to use the internal drive.
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
    3 Restart iTunes holding (Shift-Windows, Option-Mac).
4 Select Choose library. Select the library in the folder you just moved.
5 Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
6 Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.
How many songs do you contain in iTunes before you consider it is too unwieldy and time to start fresh?
Over 100,000 songs and it will start to slow down.

  • I have a G4 Quicksilver that no longer works, but the hd may still be good. How can I get files off the G4 hd and onto my new iMac?

I have a G4 Quicksilver 2001 that no longer works, but the hd may still be good. How can I get files off the G4 hd and onto my new late 2013 iMac?

Also, how do I boot the G4 into FireWire Target Disk mode?
First, the G4 must be able to start to use FWTDM. If it can start, hold the t key at boot until you get a "screensaver pattern" that looks like this:
If the G4 is attached via a FireWire cable to a newer Mac with a FireWire port, the G4's hard drive will appear on the other Mac's desktop just as if it were any external drive. A USB cable won't work for FWTDM.
Just wondering if the drive in my G4, which I believe may be an ATA drive will also work in an enclosure for a SATA drive?
No. ATA (actually "PATA" or "IDE") and SATA are different interfaces. PATA external enclosures are now very hard to find. You best and least expensive option is the adaptor that BDAqua linked. One of its connectors is for PATA drives.

  • How do you get songs off of itouch when it has been sycned with another computer

How do you get songs off an ipod touch to a new computer when the ipod touch has been synced with another computer.  The other computer died.  Thanks!

You don't.  Unless they were purchased from the iTunes store, then you can go to File > Transfer purchases.  Or you can right click (ctrl click if you're on a Mac) on the name of the device in the source list in iTunes and then choose Transfer purchases.

  • How do you get photos off a digital camera and videos off a camcorder onto the iPad air?

How do you get photos off a digital camera and videos off a camcorder onto the iPad air?

You can use the camera connection kit.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD822ZM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?f node=3a
If your camera has an SD card
or the lightening to USB for your videos
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter?fnod e=3a
(might also work for your camera)
The photo part is rather self-explanatory. as long as your photos are in the right format and with the right naming convention they should import right over. The video may be a bit more tricky. So you may want to do some more research and make sure your camera records a format the iPad will import and whether or not you need an app such as iMovie

how do you get imessage off a devise you dont have anymore?

You can try unregistering your old phone with Apple by:
    Going to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Sign in with your Apple ID
Click on ">" to the right of the phone listing
    Click "unregister"
    Unfortunately, this doesn't always work.

  • How can you get songs off your IPAD if you have it on there two times

I have the same song on my Ipad two times how can I get them off.

On the page where you have your songs, on the right hand side of the song, swipe your finger to the right and the delete button will appear.  It only takes a quick swipe.  If you hold your finger in on the song first, it will start playing.

  • How do you get movies off one itunes library, and into another.

I recently bought a dvd, and it had a free download for itunes to i uploaded it. On a different user, on the same computer, i have another itunes library in which i have all my music. It didn't transfer this purchase, and is there i way i can get the file into my itunes library?

Open your other library, go to File>Add to library and navigate to the folder containing the files you want to add. Once they are in your new library delete them from the other library making sure that when you get the prompt to move them to trash say no. You should also back your purchases up to disc or to an external drive so you don't lose them of anything happens to your hard drive:

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • How do I get files off of a macbook pro that doesn't have a working trackpad or keyboard? Is it possible to connect it to a new macbook pro?

I spilled water on my old macbook pro and now the keyboard and trackpad no longer work.  I have a new one but want to get some files off of the old one.  What would be the easiest way of doing this.  The old one also has a password so I'm not sure I could get into it anyway.

You could remove the hard drive and put it into an external enclosure. You can connect it to another Mac via Target Disk Mode and transfer the files you want that way. If you put the drive into an external enclosure you can use Migration Assistant to transfer your Home folder to the new computer.

  • How can I get files off of a MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode?

A bit of a backstory: Recently my mid-2008 MacBook Pro stopped working. When I try to boot it up, the screen just stays black and the idle light flashes perpetually. I've reset the NVRAM and SMC, even attached it to an external monitor, but nothing works. After a lot of research, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hall effect switch.
But I digress; I don't actually need this computer repaired, as I have a second (newer) MacBook Pro I can use. However, there are some files on the old one that I'd like to retrieve. And yes, I've tried booting into target disk mode, which unfortunately doesn't work for reasons listed above.
Essentially what I'm asking is, is there a way I could transfer the files off the old computer to the new one? I know, I should take it to the Apple store, but that's not really an option right now due to personal reasons. I'd just like to know if anyone could suggest another way.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Remove the drive and connect it to your other Mac with a SATA to USB adapter. Copy whatever files you want off the drive.

  • How can you get pictures off a broken locked iPhone 5

my husband broke the screen in his phone and let it die. Now we cannot get it unlocked to get the pictures off. Is there anyway to get them off??

Unfortunately, no. The only slim chance is if you connect it to the computer that you normally sync with. If it is a trusted computer, at times, it will allow the import. Generally, it will stop and ask for the passcode. If that is the case, then you will not be able to recover them if you do not have them imported or backed up already in iTunes and/or iCloud.

  • How can I get my LaCie external hard disk icon to reappear on my desktop?

The iMac discussion section does not seem open to me asking this question. It's geared to the Intel Macs or other categories which do not allow for me to type in the following question:
    Bottom Line Question:
How can I get my La Cie external hard disk icon to re-appear on my desktop?
    Background:
    I clicked Go > Computer
At that point there the usual set of icons in the far left hand column, including one for my LaCie external hard disk. Near that icon there was a dark upturned truncated/shortened arrow. I absent-mindedly clicked on that dark arrow, and at that moment I could hear my LaCie external hard drive power down; I heard the sound of hardware powering down.
The LaCie external hard drive is sitting right next to my iMac and its blue light is ON so I know that at very least I didn't turn it off.
    But where is it?
And how can I get it to reappear on my desktop?
Right now when I click onto Go > Computer, the LaCie external hard drive disk is NOT THERE.
    Thank you.
    Lorna in Southern California

James, yes. I put the question in the iMac section and did get some solutions. My LaCie external hard drive is back now. I was aware that the arrow is connected to Eject actions, but was concerned when I went to Finder Preferences and selected the LaCie to show up on the Desktop, and its icon did not show up on the desktop. I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend, James. But how could you not: You have little Kate there with you. Lorna in Southern California

  • Where's X11? And How Do I Get Stuff Off Of Install Disks With A Beige?

I just installed GIMP for graphics in case I can't ge thte disappearing Photoshop cursor in classic problem worked out.
I started up GIMP and it says I need X11. Now I thought it was on the XCodeTools disk, and I thought I had already installed them (do the Developers Tools have to be a certain place for the OS to see them?) - but all the documentations I find tells me it's on OSX install disks themselves.
    Uh-oh.
It won't LET me open the install disks, because I have a beige. How do I get into the installer - I used XPF and it got to the OS install and the only options I found were to do an archive and install, so I stopped and backed out.
Don't think I want to go there, just to put in some tools packages. Should I have pushed on through to the next window in the installer or what?
My nightmare scenario is the installer porks the system folder and I have to do the whole strip-the-guts-out and reinstall it all again..
(gaah! somebody smack me, I'm SO neurotic about this..)
How do I get to the X11 installer? Where is it?
    Deb.

You can download X11 here. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html

  • How do I get files off Mac drive in Windows? (Mac drive is connected to PC)

My iMac became FUBAR about a month ago where when I went to boot it up I was greeted by a question mark over a folder, otherwise indicating my drive was not working. Since I had no warranty left on my iMac, I opened it up and took out the drive and connected it to my PC to see if I could retrieve anything off of it. I was lucky and the drive was somehow still alive and accessible. In Windows I am able to browse the Windows partition I created with BootCamp and copy those files just fine. What I was wondering was how do I go about accessing the Mac partitioned drive to get photos I have stored on there? I am using MacDrive 7 which is suppose to do this but gave me a bunch of folders and I didn't know where to go. Folders I tried accessing said I needed to format the drive in order to explore but that's no good. Any help? I really need these photos.

If you can access the drive using MacDrive, the path to your user home folder is
    <top level>/Users/<your short user name>/
I don't know of any way to access that drive, other than connecting it to another Mac.
