How do you get OSX to rescan the attached hardware

For some reason, OSX often 'misses' one or more of the attached USB devices during boot-up. It seems to be random and usually can be corrected by rebooting. To make matters worse, I usually don't find out somethings missing until I try to use it which means taking down all running applications before the reboot. In Windows you can go to the device manager and have it 'scan for new hardware'. Is there an equivalent in OSX? It would save a lot of time.

I've tried 4 different brand hubs with the same result. I hav e a few clues as to what is going on. For example my Bella keyboard will only work plugged directly into the iMac. Even plugging it into the Cinema display's USB outputs fails (i.e. an Apple hub). I have a Wacom graphics graphics tablet. If I leave the pen or its mouse on the pad during the boot process, the tablet usually isn't found. Plugging devices directly into the iMac never fails, but there are only three USB ports. One's connected to the Cinema display and as I said its hub fails just like the others. One USB port is used by the keyboard as explained above. This leaves one iMac port for everything else. Since multiple USB devices must be online simultaneously, no choice but to use a hub. I have found that if I boot up with just the hub attached, then plug the hardware into it one-by-one, this always works. I'm relatively certain that if I could slow down the boot-up port scan (i.e. getting the OS to pause for a few milliseconds between port addresses) it would work OK. Unfortunately I don't know how to do this either.
I see no option other than to use a hub. Now I just need to find some way to get OSX to rescan the USB busses.

How do you get multiple screens on the iPad with iOS 5.1.1? We just upgraded to iOS 5.1.1, and we see no way to be able to open multiple screens at once. Before, there was a small button in the upper portion of any window. That button would take you from a particular window to the place where multiple windows are open at once. Does it do it differently? Is there a special setting button that we have missed? Thanks!
One more thing: We are only talking about Safari.

I don't think I've seen a way to have separate Safari screens visible at the same time. The small thumbnails were deleted in one of the iOS updates, and replaced with a multiple "Tab" system.
You can open an additional screen in a new "tab" by pressing and holding on a link until a new menu comes up.

In iTunes 11 how do you get Genius recommendations from the iTunes store. It would appear that I can only get Genius recommendations from my own library. This was easy in iTunes 10 and enabled me to find lots of good artists I had never heard of.

Basically it seams they got rid of the whole side bar concept of things to make it all more streamline, understandable but I know atleast for myself that genius sugestion for any song is how I found new artists and songs I never knew existed.
If you go to the Album the go to "In the Store" it will give you a recomendation for that album... not exaclty what you might be looking for but atleast its something, if anyone else has a way to get genius sugestions for individual songs I am all ears and would love to hear about it.

Launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key.
This will show the Library Chooser panel. Select the library on the external drive. Photos will create a Photos Library on the same drive.
Photos may not be able to open the library, however, if your external drive has an incompatible file system. It needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and locally mounted, not a remotely mounted volume, as described here: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

Thanks Diggie, your response was very close. I clicked on the email several times. It came up and gave me the option to Send. I clicked Send and my recipients received the email.
I did not have to delete and reinstall my email account.

How do you get Firefox to remember the response sent to remember password for a web site and not ask over and over? The desktop version has a dialog box that you can check that says "Don't ask me this again". The mobile version doesn't. A real pain!

How do you get Voice Memos off the iPhone and onto my Mac???

I used the Voice Memo app that comes with the iPhone to record some rehearsals and now I want to move them to my Mac, edit them, make CDs, share online.
I can't find any way to get them off the iPhone, unless I click the "Share" button, which means I can email them. But, it won't let me email the longer ones. I don't know how large the files are, but it just won't do it. I don't see any other facility for moving these files to my Mac. What is up with that???? iTunes provides no access to these files.
Is there some proprietary utility for the Mac that will allow me to access these files and move them to my Mac??? It would be nice if the iPhone would show up as a mounted volume which I could then browse for files, but that would make too much sense and be contrary to the control freak nature of Apple and it's iPhones/iPod Touches. I would call it another lousy user experience, but it's just a user non-experience, a complete dead end.
Is there any way to get these Voice Memo files off of the iPhone besides emailing them??

That kb article refers to the iPod Nano and not the iPhone nor the iPod Touch.
The Synchronizing section you pointed to does not work. I have a big bunch of voice memos on the iPhone. I tried the sync. Three of them were moved to the Mac, the rest were ignored. Four others were moved to iTunes Music/Music/Unknown with numbered names (i had given several of the voice memos names with the Custom label on the iPhone). For the synch I selected "Include voice memos."
After a sync, or several syncs, none of the other voice memos were moved to the Voice Memo playlist, nor are they in the iTunes Music library.
How do you get them to sync? I need to move them off of the iPhone and onto my Mac!

You have to use outlook in order to integrate contacs with PC, since that is the only program that syncs with cloud. Or you can use a "poor man's" version, by accessing those contacts over www.icloud.com website and managing there.

How do you get it to show the temperature when you scroll down?

On some some IDevices I see when you scroll down, it shows the temperature and the date. But on my iPad mini when I scroll down, it just shows the day. But at the bottom it says, " weather information provided by yahoo" I have yahoo weather installed. How do I get it to show the temperature too? Thanks.

Settings->Privacy->Location Services->Weather-> Turn it on.
It will show your current locations weather. Note that it uses GPS and internet access. so it may use your Cellular Data and battery.
