How do you get Windows 7 to recognise AE Hard drive?

I have an AirPort Extreme with an external hard drive in HFS+ format. I can access it fine on My MacBook Pro, but Windows doesn't recognise it.
I don't know how to use Windows 7, can anyone tell me how to get the hard drive recognised on it?
Thank you =)

yes, worked fine under WinXP.
now i am able to access the TC using the AirPort Utility app, that's some progress.
but still unable to map to it with File Explorer (had it mapped as Z when running WinXP)
this is my first time with Win7 ... here's what i'm doing to map
open file explorer
select map network drive
drive = "z"
folder = "\\<NAME OF TC>
select 'connect using different credentials'
select Use Another Account
it then prompts for User Name and Password
... i input the TC name for User Name and the password ... error message that windows cannot access the device
i had not problems setting it up in winxp, but that was a long time ago and it was all saved in local memory, i'm sure i'm missing something obvious, but can't see where i'm going wrong
thanks!

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.

Hi turingtest2 - thanks for the reply. As you say It is how it is - and I have three workstations in this home (not counting three for my children and one for the family) and I pretty much always have more than one OS on each - that's how it is for me. I shouldn't have to worry about how many OSs I have (or how often I change them) just to have music while I'm working - through the PC sound system that is. I never have to worry about any other software, only iTunes. Once in a while (in the past) I've made a vendor call if I changed to many things to often (like CPU, GPU, memory, etc - or even a replacement MB) - but that hasn't happened in a couple years (at least since Vista) so I think (hope) they have fixed that for good. And even then it was a quick call and problem resolved. The only (glaring) constant problem is iTunes - limiting my own use of my own music (by counting an OS as a physical PC). Even with VM (which is just another OS) - although you can Attach things to multiple active OSs - it's still your own (purchased) music - and all on one PC. Thanks again!

  • How do you transfer info from an external hard drive from a PC to a Mac

How do you transfer info from a external hard drive from a pc to a imac?

Expanding on what Niel said, a Mac can mount and read just about any hard drive from a Windows system. It can't write to an NTFS-formatted drive without third-party drivers, but it can read them. So as Niel indicated, you should be able to just connect the drive to your Mac and drag-copy over whatever you want. If you want to save things from the Mac to that drive, then it will need to be formatted either as FAT32 or exFAT, or if it's NFTS you'll again need drivers.

  • How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

  • How do I get my photos into my  hard drive?

I have 800 photos in the library of the iPhoto application.  But when I go to my user file on my hard drive and open the pictures file it is empty.  Therefore none of them are saved with Time Machine.  Shouldn't there be two sets of m photos:  1 in the iPhoto app and one on my hard drive? If so, how do I get the pbotos into my hard drive so that they are in both places.  I want them to be where they are backed up in time machine but don't know how to get them into my user file.
I  hope this makes sense....I am not even sure of the terminology I'm using!

If the Pictures folder is empty - no iPhoto Library - then open iPhoto and select iPhoto prefs>Advanced - there is a check box Importing - if it is not selected then this might be why there is nothing in the Pictures folder.
When iPhoto imports or adds content to the iPhoto library it is given the same name as the orginal file. iPhoto is making a copy which it stores on your HD. The default location for iPhoto libraries is in User Account>Pictures>iPhoto Library. This is where the actual files are kept. If you select the iPhoto Library icon and 'control' - click you will get a dialog. From that list choose 'Show Package Contents' - in there you will find where iPhoto has stored the file. You can also get to the file by selecting the file in iPhoto when it is open and from the file menu select 'Reveal in Finder' - In previous versions of iPhoto you could get to the file using 'control' (right) -click.
Anyhow - you want to make sure your library is backed up. I am not a user of TM - I use SuperDuper to clone my HD - regardless you need to tell TM which items to back up - as long as you include the Pictures folder then your iPhoto files (not the app) will be backed up.

  • How do you save your DVD to your Hard Drive, and then convert to iPod?

    Hi,
The best option is to pull the card out and plug to your computer UNLESS your computer does not have a card reader. If your computer did not have a card reader, you need to map the cardreader on your printer to your network using the following method:

  • How do you get it to recognise a Palm?

Acquired this MacPro and am still getting used to its quirks - it certainly doesn't seem to have any of the easy-to-use ness that the publicity claims - but that maybe because I am used to Windows.
I started by downloading a load of software updates - about 100Mb, lots of things seem to assume you have high speed internet access (eg iTunes always wants to connect to some shop or other), I guess Macs simply not usable if you are on dial-up. Fortunately this one is at work but I could never have one at home on this basis.
I plugged in my Palm so I could transfer my contacts and diary expecting it to recognise it and install the appropriate software automatically like it does on a PC - but nothing happens.
I found an application called isync with just two buttons labelled 'sync devices' and another labelled .mac. The .mac button is something to do with the internet so I tried the 'sync devices' button which seemed logical. It then asked me to add a device and then says it can't find any device. There is no help button on this application so I don't know what version it is but it didn't update when I downloaded all that stuff so I assume it is the latest - can anyone explain how to add a Palm (well Sony Clie TH55 actually) device and transfer the data?
I think the MacPro is now running v10.4.11 if that helps.
So far my Mac experience is not good, I was toying with getting a MacBook for my personal use, but it seems a lot to pay for something that is less easy to use than WindowsXP. Incidentally how do you guys manage without a right mouse button - Firefox underlines mis-spelt words as normal but there is no right button to correct them...
    Confused of Plymouth

The Palm Desktop is available to download from the Palm site:
    http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
though this doesn't list the Clie devices and you may need to check which version you should be using. The Desktop will run on 10.4.
The 'Apple' key is the Command key.
You may need USB Overdrive - a useful program - unless the mouse comes with a Mac driver (some Miscrosoft mice do). Apple's Might Mouse will work fine.
USB overdrive usefully allows you to assign the same mouse click to do different things in different programs.

  • How do I get my itunes from external hard drive onto new laptop?, how do I get my itunes from external hard drive onto new laptop?

A few years ago I was running out of room on my Windows laptop so I followed instructions on how to move all of the music to an external hard drive and then had all music added to the always connected external hard drive instead of the laptop. That old laptop has now died and I have a new one and need to get the music added to the new one. Is it as simple as just plugging the external hard drive into the new computer and importing or is there more I need to do? I'm just really not sure what to do and nervous about doing the wrong thing. The old computer was running Windows XP and the new one has Windows 8. I have downloaded iTunes to the new laptop. Please note that I am not super savvy so if anyone could provide easy to follow steps that would be great. Thank you!! Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks again!

  • How do you unauthorise a pc when the hard drive packs in

Recently, the hard drive on my pc packed in. Had to get a new hard drive fitted and re-installed itunes. on updating my ipod, I had to authorise my pc and itunes tells me that this pc is not authorised and some music cannot be transfered. How can I sync my ipod with itunes without loosing all my purchased music. Help please.......
    dell   Windows XP

My backup is done with Shadow Protect, which as well as providing incremental backups - it adds any changes to the back up every 18 minutes - it also allows you to keep an image of your boot drive.  This image has t be accompanied with a bootable CD, so if your boot drive crashes, you can be up and running again in minutes.  I've never needed that feature, but I have lost two data drives in the last two years, and Shadow Protect came to the rescue both times.  One of thos drives was have a raid0 with many hundreds of hours of video editing.  It would have been a huge disaster to have lost that.

  • ?: How do you move files to an external hard drive

    Hello everyone,
    I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5
I am starting to run out of internal HD space as my images in Photoshop are very large (over 1 GB ea.)
I currently use an external hard drive for Time Machine but would like to use a different external hard drive just to have my photo images on it.
Im assuming that i would purchase another external hard drive formatted for mac, plug it into my MBP and simply drag my image files from my MBP onto the external hard drive icon. After that just delete the images from my MBP HD. Is that all there is to it?
I wasnt sure if there was a step in there where you have to tell your MBP that the new external hard drive is NOT for Time Machine, but is simply to transfer image files onto (?)
Please let me know if this is how it works and how to do this.
best to you all and thanks so much for your help
    take care,
    rick

    Rick,
the “EDIT” note in my last response was an “oh yeah, I should mention this” moment that I’d had after initially responding with my single “yup” sentence. You had mentioned that you were already using Time Machine to back up your internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I’d wanted to clarify that your new external hard disk should not be simultaneously used as a Time Machine backup drive; it should be treated just like your internal hard disk, in that it gets backed up by Time Machine (a “source” drive) rather than receives Time Machine backups (a “destination” drive), which your current external hard drive already does.
As far as my recommendations, I’ve had good results with the Hitachi hard drive series with five-year warranties. I’m currently using a Samsung 840 PRO SSD as my internal disk; so far, so good, but I don’t have long-term experience with it yet. (The 840 PRO has a five-year warranty also. As you can tell, I prefer drives with long warranties.) Since you have a 2009 MacBook Pro, getting your new drive in an external enclosure with a FireWire 800 port (and getting a FireWire 800 cable for it, of course) will allow the best performance when reading from or writing to it. Since it will be holding large images, performance will probably be an important criterion for you.
To set up your new external drive to be backed up by Time Machine, plug it in to your MacBook Pro, open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences, unlock the lock in the lower left corner if it shows a locked padlock,  press the “Options…” button in the lower right corner, and make sure that your new external drive is not in the list of drives excluded from being backed up. If it’s not there, then you should be good. If it is there, then you’ll need to select it and press the “-” button to “subtract” it from the list of excluded drives.

  • How do you transfer music from an external hard drive into iTunes on a mac, but not write the music into the mac's internal hard drive?

I am trying to load an external library with about 700 gigs of music into iTunes on my mac, but of course my mac's inter hard drive is much less than that. Is there a way I can load the music onto iTunes without importing it into my computer? I use this hard drive for DJing so it is plugged in the majority of the time. I have iTunes 12.0.1.26 on a 2011 13" MacBook Pro.

Do you use both the internal and external drives for storing music or just the external drive?  If both, hold down the option key while dragging media to iTunes to get it to leave the media where it is and add the track location information to iTunes.  A better solution would be to relocate the entire iTunes library to the external drive and run it all from one place.  This will also make it easier to make backups of the library as you should since you are using this in a professional capacity and your livelihood depends upon it.  We can provide advice on how to do this once we know more about your setup (is there an existing library already, and where?)

  • How do I get a crashed Powermac G4 hard drive to mount?

I have a Western Digital 20GB Ata hard drive that has crashed badly. Despite reading other forum posts here and trying out the useful suggestions, I have been unsuccessful in remounting my hard drive. This has denied me access to a precious archive of work e-mails in my macmail mail-box, and other home office work data including Safari bookmarks tracked via the now non-existent user preferences folder.
This is all information that I would really like to recover without sending to a data recovery company. The loss of data access has been stressful for me over the last several days.
Fortunately, I always stored my text edit, word, and other raw documents on a subsidiary drive. However, and this is unfortunate, backups of my "home folder" fell of the radar due to some significant health issues over the past couple of years. Now, I'm paying the price for that loss of focus.
I'm running a Powermac G4 AGP machine with 1.5ghz fastmac processor, 1.75gb ram, OSX 10.4.11. This has been a good computer for my home office work including e-mails, web browsing etc. The main drive in a two drive setup has been a 20gb Apple branded hard drive Western digital drive that was reported full before the crash. This was after the console log file in the system folder reported large gigabyte file logs.
No major data has ever been stored on this hard drive, only the OS, yet it would fill up. This has happened in the past and I have been able to delete these files, then restart the computer thus clearing hard drive space. I've done this for the last two years.
Two weeks ago when the computer reported low hard disk space, I had a several safari windows open. The computer then froze and the entire computer became totally unresponsive. I had to force power off the computer to get it to restart.
Since then, despite using disk utilities like Techtool, Disk Warrior, Prosoft Drive Genius, Prosoft Data recovery and other  software demos like Remo recover, Total Recall, Stellar Phoenix, and Virtual Lab the drive has never been "seen" by the OS to let the data recovery software access it.
I've also used techniques like Safe boot, Singe user mode, Target disk mode, plus mounting the drive in a Wiebetech Firewire 400 external enclosure, and still I've never managed to get the drive to be recognized by the system, let alone remount. All I got was the circle with a slash through it or the mac smiley icon that alternates with a question mark.
The 20Gb WD was the primary ide drive in a two drive setup that also has a Maxtor diamond Max Plus 9 60Gb ATA133 Hard drive which was my subsidiary drive for data storage. I have since mounted this drive when it was made the only drive on the ide cable (the Maxtor has 10.4.6 on it that I can boot from successfully). (If the Western Digital is either the primary or secondary drive on the joint ide cable, the Maxtor then fails to mount).
The crashed hard drive symptoms are:
On startup the Western Digital disk makes several whining noises like it wants to startup, and also sounds like it is trying to access the drive data platters, then it goes quiet. After making the drive the only drive on the ide cable, and rejumpering the drive accordingly, it is only making two whining or "coughing noises" like it wants to start, then goes quiet. In neither case, does the OS ever register its presence.
In the firewire enclosure the drive either starts with the first type of sound and then reverts to periodically making the second type of coughing sound or it just makes the "coughing sound".
    Crashed Drive Description is:
WESTERN DIGITAL 20GB TRIDE 655T0022 WC93300Y5H7YA EIDE HARD DRIVE. Made August 18, 1999.
    MDL (Model) is WD205BA-40AK.
    Firmware is CRNBLKMO.
PRIMARY CONTROLLER BOARD (PCB) NUMBER ON WHITE LABEL JUST ABOVE DATA CONNECTOR IS 845000A 30M01G2V2E2 0056, Apple part # 655T0022
Has Apple logo and came with Sawtooth Machine 450Mhz that was upgraded to 1.5ghz via Fastmac processor and 1.75Gb CL2 Crucial Ram.
Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome to get the drive to mount and then copy of my home folder data.
    Thank you.

    Hi Glen,
thank you for your response and suggestions. Truth be told, the old wives tale you mention is gospel for some depending on where one looks on the internet. There's actually a website dedicated to the discussion of crashed hard drives that was started by a guy who persisted in trying to look at alternatives because the professional data recovery option was too expensive for him to pursue.
He eventually had success with an exact make and model "donor" drive logic board swap and got all his data back. On the forum there and elsewhere many people swear by the freezer method as the only way they got their data back.
However, the option also has risks so has to be applied with care. So I'm not committed to pursuing that path and no I wouldn't blame you for putting the idea in my head or suggesting the link if I was to try it.
I'm also not currently trying to mount the hard drive but instead have spent some time researching my options prior to data recovery. I had the thought to find a database of failed or failing hard drive sounds so I could compare it to the sound my Western Digital is making. I eventually found a great place with failed hard drive sounds for all different makes and types (ironically run by a generous Data recovery company who want you to be able to determine whether their services are needed).
I compared the sound of my hard drive to several  Western Digitals on their website plus the sound of dying hard drive on another site and was relieved to hear that my hard drive doesn't sound like it is dying. What it sounds closest to is the example of a fried logic board. In that instance a logic board swap remounted the drive. Many other people on the web have had success with this method, provided the drive is an exact or close match in manufacturing date, model type and firmware. (Some specialist companies can also burn the exact crashed drive firmware code into the donor drive's logic board.)
At best, if the firmware doesn't match, the drive simply spins up but doesn't mount. So at the moment I'm trying to locate an exact donor drive to do a board swap. Since the WD is an apple branded "Expert" rather than the more common Caviar drive this isn't easy but I'm hopeful.
Secondly, on another website I saw the suggestion to try mounting the drive into a PC or into bootcamp. The thought here is that when a hard drive is full it runs out of index room and starts overwriting itself. This in turn leads to data corruption. So if the Pc ignores the Western Digital generated data corruption errors that are taking down the ide bus in my mac, and mounts the drive it can help diagnose if data corruption is the problem or not.
Some here might think that mounting a drive in a pc is problematic, but it was suggested by a mac expert. Atleast the bootcamp option is something for me to look into first as it will keep the Western Digital on a mac.
That's where I am so far.  Any other thoughts or suggestions are  welcome.

  • HT3500 how do you transfer data from an external hard drive to a mac time capsule

I am trying to use my Mac Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive for my MacBook Pro, so how do I transfer the data from a toshiba external hard drive, to my Mac Time Capsule?

Drag and drop or copy and paste files just as you would do with any normal Finder operation.
The Time Capsule is located under the SHARED heading in the Finder.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and double click the folder that appears representing the drive....named Data....unless you have changed the name......to mount the drive on the desktop.
Drag/drop or copy/paste files to the icon on the desktop or to the open window there.

  • How do you lock the name of a hard drive?

I have looked quite a bit through the forums and cannot find an exact answer concerning locking the HD name not the entire drive, just its name. Over the years I have several times, I quess parked the cursor over the name of the hard drive and some how highlighted it and started entering text only to find that I have been typing in the drivename box. Not always a problem, when you catch it right away. I'v come back and found my Macintosh HD named -T, Q or whatever key strokes might have been entered. I have lost drive partitions because I couldn't remember the name I had given it.
all models   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   earlier Mac OS systems as well
all models   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   earlier Mac OS systems as well

The same way you change it on the internal drive; click on the name and wait a second or two for the field to drop into editing mode, then just type the new name. Or Get Info on the file/folder and change the name there.
