How do you install a backed up hard drive?
Hi Guys,
I recently had my hard drive expire on my G5
I have a back up of all data and applications that is on an external hard drive.
How do I now install this back on to my G5 and its new hard drive?
Is it as simple as drag and drop? Do I have to reinstall all the applications?
I have wondered with all this talk about back ups, how it actually works.
Can anyone help out ? are there some explanations I can follow?
where should i look
many thanks
You are in the Mac Pro forums. You should post your question in the Power Mac forums.
What you should have done is to copy your entire bootable internal drive to the external (for example, using Carbon Copy Cloner). Then you could reverse the operation to create your new internal.
I can't tell you how to restore what you backed up because I don't know what you backed up. Odds are, yes, you will need to reinstall to recreate registrations, preferences, and other data associated with each application.

My old hard drive crashed. How do you reload CS2 on new hard drive and get it activated?
You'll need to get onto Support and explain, and if you have not made a habbit of asking, they'll reset your activations limit back to zero. Or if you have only ever installed it once, you'll still have an activation to use.

how do I safely disconnect the external hard drive?
You can also click the little "Eject" button next to the disk in the Finder sidebar, or right-click the disk and choose the option to eject, or select it and press Command-E, all as alternative options to eject the drive.

HT201262 how do you confirm a Macbook Pro hard drive failure?
I have an older Macbook Pro that I want to bring back to life.
All indications point to full hard drive failure.
How do I confirm that the drive needs to be replaced?Welcome dadzpony,
The simplest way is to start it up with the original disks. Go to Disk Utility and try to repair the original drive. If Disk Utility can't repair it then it's probably dead.
If you had a drive in an external enclosure with an appropriate OS you could boot with that also. Hold "option" down while booting and select the drive you want to boot from.
The HD in this machine is easy to replace. Go here for instructions:

I want to install Lion on an external hard drive. The OS was purchased and downloaded through the App Store but I do not know where the file is.
If you downloaded the installer it will be in your applications folder. Failing that use spotlight start typing Install and it should show up.
This is assuming you downloaded the installer from the app store, and didn't just install it onto your mac. If all you have done is install it on your mac. Go to your purchases Lion should show up. Then click download.

How do you delete transparent file from hard drive?
Hi. I lent my hard drive to my friend and came back with this weird file named "\". I want to delete this file, but when ever I put this in the trash and empty it, my computer starts lagging. (So I have to relaunch my Finder) This file doesn't allow me to rename it. If anyone knows the way to delete this, please tell me. Thanks
Hi rebellium.rebel,
Thank you for your reply.
Another option to consider would be formatting (erasing) the hard drive, after moving your files off of it.
You can find a step-by-step guide for this in the below article, which are good general steps although the article references Aperture:
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture - Apple Support
If the files reappear in the future, some of the steps in this guide may be helpful, such as checking with the manufacturer regarding this situation and whether the drive requires additional software:

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
How do you format an NTSF external hard drive for use with Mountain Lion
I'm switching over to Mac from PC, and have an external NTSF formated hard drive I regularly use. I understand from the forum the initial file transfer should be no issue, but for ongoing use of the HD, does it need to be formated to something other than NTSF... and if so, to what and how.
Do this when you're ready:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size. -

How do you install Lightroom on a NAS drive?
I want to install Lightroom and all data on my NAS drive. (as my main drive contains no data on it what so ever).
I also do not have a 'Pictures', 'Videos', or 'Music' folder on this drive either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
KeithKeith first I would recommend installing applications on the same drive/partition which contains your operating system. If you are utilizing a SSD for your operating system then much of the benefits of the SSD are lost when running applications from a traditional hard drive.
What version of Photoshop Lightroom are you wanting to install on this drive? Is Lightroom included as part of a membership or do you own a license? -
How to re-install Yosemite without external hard drive?
My rMBP has been having battery issues the last couple of months, and I believe that it's due to my installation of Yosemite. I'd like to do an fresh install of it, but I don't have enough money to buy an external hard drive for Time Machine.
What are some other ways to install Yosemite with just the MBP itself?
Thanks!Restart with the Command and R keys held down and perform the installation and other functions normally. This process doesn't directly use the external drive, but if a problem occurs and you don't have a backup, you may lose some or all of your data. If you choose to erase the partition with Yosemite on it, you will lose all of the data on that partition.

How do you set up an external hard drive?
how do you configure an external hard drive?
For TimeMachine? or for data, would be basically the same.
Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).
Connect the disk if it isn't already attached.
In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select the disk you want to use with Time Machine.
Optional: If you want to partition the disk, click the Partition tab and select a layout. Make sure "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is selected in the Format menu for the partition that will be used for backups. Click Apply.
Click the Erase tab.
Optional: If you want to securely erase the disk, click Security Options to configure, then click OK.
Click Erase.

The choice for an external drive, USB3 or not, the type of drive in the enclosure, probably the brand or make of the external drive (Western Digital, OWC, Seagate) is the most important choice and lot of options. -
How do I go about backing my hard drive?
I want to back up my hard drive in case anything should happen, what would be the best way of doing this?
Hi cgaff;
My suggestion would be to get an external Firewire drive for the backup. Then download either Carbon Copy Clone (CCC) or SuperDuper to backup your system to the external drive. Either of these applications is capable of cloning your system drive so that you can boot from it. Once you have finished backing up I would strongly suggest that you boot from the backup to test it.

How do you boot from an external hard drive if...
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any advice. My 24" IMAC suddenly had hard drive ****. After much investigation it has been determined that my internal hard drive has bit the dust. Instead of taking the IMAC apart and replacing the internal drive(which I know a bit about and also could get help doing)can I just replace it with an external drive and load the OS on that and boot from there? If so what exactly, step by step, would I need to do? What are the disadvantages of doing this? If this is possible it seems like an easier solution than replacing the internal drive.
Again, thanks for the help.

Yes, but it's not recommended for long-term use.

First, make sure the drive will boot a Mac. Most will, but some won't. If it's a Western Digital, check here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*
If you're reasonably sure the drive is capable of booting your Mac, you need to format it. Start up your Mac from the Install disc (insert it, and hold the "C" key while starting up). After selecting your language, select Utilities, then +Disk Utility+ from the menubar.
Select the drive, select the top line (with the make and size), click the Partition tab and select 1 Partition from the the pop-up menu under +Volume Scheme,+ unless you need more than one.
Give it a name under +Volume Information,+ and select +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ for the Format unless you're certain you need Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled). Click the Options button below the box, and select GUID (that should be the default, but make sure), and click the OK button, then Apply. That should only take a few moments. Quit Disk Utility and you’ll see the Utilities menu again.
Quit that and proceed with the installation to the new drive. When done, I think it will reboot automatically from the external; if not, start up while holding down the Option key, which will give you the +Startup Manager,+ where you can select the desired drive.
