How do you login as different user with Leopard client

Hi All,
I have an OS X server running 10.4.10. I've never had this problem when connecting to it with Tiger clients.
With Leopard clients, I'm trying to login as administrator. There's no way to do it. I don't show any connected servers (or mounted shares) and when I choose "Connect to Server" it shows the Server Address IP dialog as usual, but once you click OK, it brings up the Shares dialog box with share only available to standard users.
In the old days, once I chose the IP for a server, it would give me the name and password dialog box and I'd put in the credentials for whoever and get the correct shares dialog. Now I can't get to the name and password dialog, and no shares are mounted.
I've tried holding down all kinds of key combinations, but if there's one that does it, I can't find it.
Please help.
BTW - another topic that doesn't even come close to showing up in Apple's kbase.
Thanks. Mike.

in the finder under the column view there are 2 buttons that show up when you select the server.. one is "share screen" and the other is "connect as", if you have guest enables on your server and you connect to it through the shared section in the finder you will connect as guest. By using the connect as button you will connect as a user.

Yes, create another user profile on the computer and each user can log into their own profile that way.

  • How do you login to 2 sessions with same user with lightdm?

    As the title says.
When I've got one DE session running (Cinnamon in my case) on tty1 then I go switch user and lightdm pops up on tty2. If I were then to choose a different user and login it loads the new session on tty2, however if I choose my user but with a different WM/DE it just kicks me back to tty1 with Cinnamon.
I'm trying some new WMs so I want to be able to leave my main session running in case I don't know the commands for the new WM (and can't even open an internet browser to look them up, it's happened to me before).
    Cheers

You can definitely have more than one login to different desktop environments (or any other X session).  But I don't know of a way that this can be done through a login manager.  I think you could definitely log into an X session for the first, but for the second I think you would have to either have a different seat available, or you would have to start it from a TTY (with startx or xinit).

  • How do you merge two different users on one computer?

I created a user account on my computer, then when I used Migration Assistant to transfer some of the files off my old computer onto my new MacBook Air it transferred them into a new user account.  How do I merge the two different users? They are both me.

You can't "merge" users, you have to transfer the files using intermediate steps to deal with Permissions issues.
You found out first hand that you should use Setup Assistant, rather than Migration Assistant to perform the action that is now causing trouble, and time.
    1) Log in to the A account.
    2) Locate all the files you want to move. Move them to /Users/A/Public. Note: Don't move any System-created top-level folders, like Documents, Pictures, Music, Movies, etc. Just move their contents.
    3) Log in to the B account.
    4) Navigate with Finder to /Users/A/Public. Drag the files to the Desktop. This will make new copies of them that will have the correct permissions for User B.
    5) Put the new copies of the files away in the appropriate places in B's home folder.
    6) Delete the A user account if it is no longer needed.
Doing it this way will ensure that there are no permissions headaches with the files after they are moved.
Also, make sure that you BACK UP all of your data before starting.

Glad you got it sorted. I didn't realize you weren't on a network with a DNS or I'm sure someone would have suggested using the IP address.
As to Bonjour, one correction about a misunderstanding. Bonjour (AKA zero-configuration networking) is still TCP/IP. What it is is a protocol that runs on TCP and provides name to address translation without a DNS server, and service discovery without a directory server. What that means in practical terms is that, as was the case with old AppleTalk networks, you can see and use services and devices by name rather than having to know their IP addresses. If you're familiar with Windows networks, it's similar to the service provided by WINS or Active Directory but doesn't require a central server. You can get a more thorough explanation here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software)
A Bonjour-capable device or service will almost always have a feature that allows you to name the device using whatever you like. That device/service will then advertise using that name, so when you browse on your system, you see the name and can select the device/service as appropriate. Only if no name has been assigned by the user, or the device doesn't support Bonjour, do you see the "random character" names. And of course if the name given to the device doesn't make sense to you, that won't help either.
If you have a lot of printers on the network, it may be too difficult to get everyone to name them (for those that support Bonjour), so it may not help you select printers. But you can still name things that you control so that you can connect to those more easily. But connecting via TCP/IP addresses is of course an option. The difficulty there arises when IP addresses are assigned via DCHP or self-assigned, as those IP addresses can change when the system is restarted.
    Hope this helps.
PS: Apple techs will never respond here. It's all users helping users. You may see Apple employees post from time to time, but when they do it's as private users, not Apple employees. They're just required to identify, via an Apple logo under their name at left, as Apple employees so as to not mislead anyone.

  • How do you forward a text message with pictures to another mobile user

How do you forward a text message with pictures to another mobile device?

    Howdy Greg,
It sounds like you have some texts with images attached you would like to forward to another device. If the it can receive text messages, use these steps:
Send messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
How do I forward a message?
To forward a message, tap and hold the message bubble, then tap More.
Tap to select the message you want to forward, then tap  and select the person to send it to.
If the receiving device does not have the ability to receive text messages, you can also email them to an account setup on it by first saving the message to your phone:
How do I save a photo from a message?
Tap the photo, then tap .
Then emailing it to an account setup on the device from the Photos app:
Other ways to share photos and videos - iPhone
Save or share a photo or video you receive.
Email:  Tap to download it if necessary, then touch and hold the item to see sharing and other options.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How can i create a new user with only read rights ?

How can i create a new user with only read rights ?

You are asking about a Database User I hope.
You can look into the Oracle 8i Documentation and find various privillages listed.
    In particular, you may find:
Chapter 27 Privileges, Roles, and Security Policies
    an intresting chapter.
You may want to do this with the various tools included with 8i - including the
Oracle DBA Studio - expand the Security node and you can create USERS and ROLES.
Or use SQL*Plus. To create a
user / password named John / Smith, you would login to SQL*Plus as System/manager (or other) and type in:
    Create user John identified by Smith;
    Grant CONNECT to John;
    Grant SELECT ANY TABLE to John;
    commit;
There is much more you can do
    depending on your needs.
    Please read the documentation.
    -John

How do you combine 3 different itunes libraries from 3 different computers to 1 computer?
Can you keep it from creating duplicates?  These libraries have some duplicates.
How do you deal with duplicates?
    I'm talking 50GB.
    All computers are authorized.
    THANKS for any suggestions.

    You can't.
If accounts could be merged, then everybody could merge their accounts with everybody and there would be no need for anyone to buy anything.

    Hi Edward
You can do this by assigning the role functionality to the application user. For example
create the table to enter user name.
create table to enter group name.
create table to assign user to group.
    assign role to group.
assign functionality for the user by coding.
    hope this helps

  • How do you Enable/Disable a user's ScreenSaver and set it's time

How do you Enable/Disable a user's ScreenSaver and set it's "Start Screen Saver" time.
I am writting an application in java which uses JNI and a screen saver to lock users out of the computer unless they enter the correct username and password.
If they enter the correct password I need to Enable the ScreenSaver at a specific about of time (time can be changed remotely) so I can "log out" the user.
I need to disable the screen saver after the screen saver runs so that it doesn't run while the java login program is running.
I have this working already on Windows XP but can't find any way to program this on Mac OS X.
    Thank you for any help!

  • How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes?

How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes? I know there is a key press combo that will do it but I forget which keys. Anyone?
    Intel Piii   Windows XP Pro

Keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
    Another Easier Alternative:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes. The iPod will then appear in the iTunes source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto-sync and then you can release the keys. This action may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
You can then ‘right-click‘ on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.
Note: If connecting to a different computer than the ‘iPod’s Home Computer’, iTunes will ask you if you want to update your iPod and give you an opportunity to opt out. This will not happen if you connect to the ‘Home’ computer – iTunes will auto-sync without warning!. Best to know the difference.
