How do you make it look like a book?

Hi,
I noticed that many best selling books they have along the edges, like a hard book cover.
Then in the middle of the page is a page crease.
These two elements make it look much more like a book.
How do I create these elements for my book?
How do they use the headers and footers?

Those books were not made using iBooks Author.
iBA books (hybrid epub) will not provide that style/look.
You'll need to create a standard epub if you want that type of navigation/presenation to the suer. Apple's Pages (also Indesign, etc.) will output the epub format that will provide the exact look in your example/screenshot.

Here's a really quick tutorial on how to add the mask and gradient text over the image of a tiger.
Masking the Image
1) Open your image of the tiger. There should be two layers in your layers panel: the image and a white background.
2) With the tiger layer selected, click on the icon marked below in the layers panel to create a layer mask.
3) Being sure you have the mask you just created selected, paint with black using the brush tool to mask out the image. In your layers panel, if you look at the mask icon, you will see the areas where you were painting (on the canvas) change to black. Use a variety of brushes to recreate the effect in your example image.
Creating Text with a Gradient Effect
1) Use the Type Tool to create your basic text and reposition it on the page with the Move Tool.
2) In the layers panel, control click on the type layer and select Blending Options.
3) In the dialog box that opens, check the Gradient Overlay box and click on the "gradient overlay" text to move to the gradient options. Adjust the angle of the gradient, then click on the colored bar to select the colors you want. Click OK on each dialog to close them.

Painting runs the gamut from, say, house-painting to Jan van Eyck, with stops along way for Ellsworth Kelly, Willem de Kooning, and even that electrifier of turds, Thomas Kincade.
You might be able to mimic a few of these with the tools in Aperture. What do you have in mind?

hi i no how to make it with photoshop but the program keeps

Ah, fire!
So, it depends on how you want to make it. How were you
making it in Photoshop? If you are looking for filter, Eye Candy
provides a fire filter. Unfortunately I don't think it comes with
CS3, thought it did come with older version.
You could also try the old trick to making fire by using the
smudge tool. Here's a great tutorial on how this can be done in
Fireworks:

I don't like the new layout. How can I make it look like it did before this unwanted update?

I don't want to just reinstall the older version, since I'll be constantly refusing update requests and will lose any new security updates. I just want to have the layout I had before FF changed it without informing me in advance. Otherwise I will switch to a different browser. I'm a patient man, so I will give FF 24 hours to correct this unwanted annoyance before switching over to the competition.

How can I make Firefox look like the new updated toolbar?

I installed Firefox 4 on a new computer running Windows XP, but I still have the old look and layout of Firefox. I want to use the new look with the all in one drop down menu bar.
This is a fresh install of Firefox 4 with no previous version installed. Below is what mine looks like.

During installation of the NI-VISA 2.01 driver I get an error that tells me that my file (NICVISA.DPT) doesnt look like a tar archive. How can I make it look like a tar archive or is that not the solution to the problem?

I am trying to install the NI-VISA 2.01 driver I downloaded from the NI website on a HP-UX 10.2 platform, but it keeps giving me the following error:
tar: /var/spool/sw/NICVISA.DPT: This doesnt look like a tar archive.
I also get errors telling me that files can't be loaded because their missing from source media. What could be causing this? Some of the files are msgrt4.txt,ni7seg24.bdf,ni7seg26, etc... Can these needed files be downloaded anywhere or is the problem linked to the tar archive scenario..

The files were corrupt. Originally I had downloaded the driver files to my PC and used FTP to transfer them to my UNIX machine.
Your tech support rep. suggested I download the driver files via ftp.ni.com to my UNIX machine vs. the PC...this worked great. I am now communicating with my instrument

How do I get my contacts to have pictures next to them in the contacts menu like Steve's? I can't figure this one out...

Actually, all you need is a photo to assign on your phone. Just select the photo in the phone you wish to assign to a contact. Then tap photo to get the icon menu. Hit the icon on the bottom far left that has a arrow poitning right. Then select "Assign to Contact" then choose the contact you want. It will then let you move and scale the photo. Click set photo when you're happy. It will then assign and save it to that contact.
There's also another way to do it. Simply go to the contact you want click the edit button then click the add photo area, that then gives you the option to take a photo for the contact or to choose an existing photo to use.

SO all my ppictures need to be synced form the computer? I just remember in the original iPhone keynote and also in the June one as he scrolled through his contacts there were pictures next to each person. Even for the contacts I have loaded form the PC (synced with pics from pc) this does not hold true. I do know that the ones synced from the pc do show the smaller icon when called but not in the contact list as does Steve's.

Is it a linear, radial, angle, etc?

Right idea, slightly wrong terminology. It's actually a Fill Layer on which you can make a gradient, then edit its characteristics.
Once you have such a Fill Layer created, you can edit it by double clicking the gradient icon in the Layers panel, and you can move its position by unchecking "Align with layer" then moving the center by dragging it while the Gradient Fill dialog is still open:

How can i make something look like it was embossed in PS?

I have a simple shape...a rectangle filled with a solid color. It is a separator bar on a poster. I want the top of the bar to have highlight and the bottom of the bar to be darkened. (As if I brought it into PS and applied an emboss filter)
I tried using a gradient and got ok results. Is there a better way to do this?

If you count me, now two people want to know how to emboss a simple shape or path in Ai. I already know how to do it in both Photoshop and Fireworks, both a piece of pie, but I (we) must be overlooking something astonishingly obvious in Illustrator.
Why not do it in Photoshop? Because the background from Ps comes along for the ride - even if it's transparent in Ps. And, unless I flatten the embossed path in Fw (converting it to bitmap from vector), the emboss doesn't paste into Ai, and then the background comes along...
