You only have to install applications once, after which are available to all users on your Mac. But each user account will have its own individual preferences to set and may have some initialization to do the first time the application runs in each account.
Also, most applications that require entry of a license code accept the code once and apply it to all user accounts on your Mac. But there are some exceptions, some applications, that don't seem to do this (or don't do it well) and you may have to enter your license code in each user account the first time you run those applications in each account. For example, iTunes will ask you to accept the license the first time you run it in each user account.

Hi everyone,
I am new to Java and so far I really like it. But I am having problems porting applets to my websites. How can you make sure that all the references can and will be found in the applet...
for example,
I import javax.media.ControllListener in a project I am using and it works great in the applet viewer but when I try to port this to my website I'm working on, java can't find it. I really would appreciate any help on this cause then I would have java power :) and will keep me from losing my hair :).

How do you make a program run when any user logs in?

I have an application which will need to run when any users logs in.
Such that Joe downloads and installs the application, logs out, then Sally logs in and the application runs for Sally.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Yes, they are definitely different folders. The "~" character represents the current users home folder, so "~/Library" represents the Library folder that's located inside a users home folder. Anything placed in there will only affect the one user whose home folder you've accessed.
The "/Library" folder is the Library folder that exists at to root of the boot volume. Things placed in this Library folder will affect all users of the system. Basically it's sort of a "global" Library.

That could be tricky based on the structure of that particular plist file. I haven't really looked at it closely but one place you could start is to read the "man" page for the "defaults" command... enter "man defaults" in Terminal. The "defaults" command allows you to read/write plist files, but defaults is not very good at accessing deeply nested plist items.
Related to that, how do I tell if the logging item
for my App is already there? I do not want to keep
adding to the list if it is there. If someone
deletes my app and then reinstalls it, I do not want
it to run twice, three times, etc..
Again, you could possibly read the plist using the defaults command and determine whether your item was already present or not.

No, the one in ~/Library is in each individual user home folder. It will execute with the current user's privileges. This is where Login Items normally go when you go through the GUI... "Sys.Prefs -> Accounts -> Login Items" and add a login item for one user.
Even items placed in /Library, which should execute for all users, will execute with the current user's privileges.
In the near
future we might need root privileges, so I might need
a program to startup for all users as root instead of
the user.
Is your app, that needs to run at login time, a GUI application or is it a faceless shell script (or something similar). Your original post gave me the impression that you needed to launch a GUI application. However, if it's a shell script then you probably want to look at doing a LoginHook instead of using the Login Items procedure at the web page I posted earlier. I believe a LoginHook will also give you the ability to run the script as root.

How do you make the color bleed over the margins for a cover

Hello,
We currently do our covers in InDesign but want to move them into our FrameMaker book file. There is a block of color at the top of the cover that we want to go to the edge of the cover. How do you set it up so that the color bleeds about 1/8" past the edge of the paper so that the printer can properly cut the cover without any white on the edges?
It's an 8-1/2 x 11 book, created with Frame 9 on a Windows XP Professional.

How are you creating the PDF and which version (including point release) of FM are you using?
To create bleeds, you were on the right track positioning the graphic off the page by a negative amount. However, you don't increase the size of the page in your FM layout, you output to a larger sheet size (i.e. pick this in your AdobePDF printer setup or the Page Size in your SaveAsPDF options ). Unfortunately, you won't be able to preview this in FM. Look to your PDF to see what's going on. Note: SaveAsPDF *always* applies a crop value equal the FM defined page-size layout; in Acrobat for PDFs created via the SaveAsPDF route, you have to turn off the crop to see the entire media box with the bleed values.
If you're using FM10, make sure that you're patched to the latest 10.0.2p419 version. This is the only version that makes reasonable CMYK PDFs for print production, all prior FM10 & FM9 versions are quite buggy (for CMYK) and are not recommended for the CMYK route (you have to use the Convert CMYK to RGB option in this case and fix up in Acrobat or with third-party tools like the Enfocus PitStopPro plug-in for Acrobat).

If one had a stack of images that need a brightness adjustment. How can you preform the adjustment a stack of images that need the same amount of adjustment?
Many times I have a stack of images that need a +10 brightness adjustment on them and it would save a lot of time if I could do it on a whole stack of images.

good points, as l/s takes every adjustment ... including autolevels/exposure ... BUT DOESN'T make them auto to the next image(s), it just lifts the current image settings !!! which is fine for a five shoot series all at the same exposure, but not so much when it is not !!!

How do I make automator services available to all user accounts?

I wrote an automator script and made it a service (the standard one that shows all hidden files, or un-shows all hidden files) and I'd like to make it a system-wide service so all user accounts on my Mac can use it.
I'd prefer to not log in to each account to set it up as I feel that would waste space (I know, not much is needed) but more importantly if I have to change the script I only have to do it in one place.
How do I do this?
I have other scripts I'd like to make available to all too.
I'm currently running OS X 10.9.5 on a 2008 (not Pro) MacBook core 2 duo.

I didn't post if it worked for other user accounts because at the time, I didn't know. It was late when I got it working for my primary account and decided to check it later, which I did this morning, and the services did show up for the other accounts. Yea!!
As far as the workflows being "corrupt", I still don't know why, either.
It was odd that when I did Get Info for that file the Preview section actually showed (but of course, very tiny) the Automator script, so clicking (double-clicking? D-C worked this morning) it opened with no errors in Automator. Permissions are still 777 (unix), but I'll change them back to 666.
Hey! 666 removed them from Services! And when I try to open the workflow in Automator it tells me the file is corrupt. Go figure.
The answer to that might be that the /Library/Services directory already existed (because of the MacExplorer app I installed) so it held LaunchMacExplorer.workflow. The permissions on that file are drwxr-xr-x@ 3 padr staff 102 Jan 27 2013 LaunchMacExplorer.workflow .
I always wondered why write was needed for a workflow. Read or execute (unix) should be good enough.
I changed some of the files to 751 to match the MacExplorer workflow and those not only changed the coloring (ls -al) in terminal but they also now show up in Services. Yea!

How do you make a template from muse to the bc?

I was told to just add a tag_content (in brackets) to a page rather than the A-master page and upload it to bc. Support said that bc would recognize it and put the page into the template folder.. that didnt happen for me.. All i had was a new page with the text tag_content in brackets displayed.. pls help.

Syncing the phone automatically backs up all of that. When you plug in the new iPhone 3G, it will ask if you want to restore from a backup.

I have three device: Macbook Pro (OSX 10.7.5) for work; an iPad and a Blackberry for mobile. I used mail, iCal, and Address Book combine with mobileme (iCloud) to exchange data such as contact, calendar and task from my Mackbook Pro to my iPad but never to Blackberry. The problem is my boss was asking me to change to Outlook 2011 for Mac because some of the email that I sent from Mail did not appear in my client's Blackberry. So how do you sync iCloud (contact, calendar, task) to Outlook 2011 for Mac? and how do you make seemless sync between iCloud to Outlook 2011 to Blackberry device or an iPad?
