How do you move imported iMovie events to different drive?

Hi there,
I'd like to import my entire iMovie event library (200+ GB) into Final Cut Pro X, but I can't figure out how to get the imported events to live anywhere besides the startup disk.
Here's my process so far:
Use FCPX's feature to import my entire iMovie event library. Make tea.
I don't seem to be able to choose which drive to import to, so they end up on the startup disk at ~/Movies/Final Cut Events
No worries! FCPX is a media management superhero. I just use the FCPX event browser to drag the events to my external drive.
Make more tea while all the events are moved to my external.
So far so good! My ~/Movies/Final Cut Events folder is clean, and my /Volumes/ExternalDrive/Final Cut Events folder is full.
Now let's test updating my imported library by clicking to import the library a second time. (Dialog confirms my impression that only new material will be copied.)
Result: Oh no! My entire iMovie event library is re-imported to the startup disk. Now I have two copies of each event in FCPX (not to mention the original copy in iMovie events -- oi my hard drives are filling up fast.)
So:
How do I get FCPX to import my iMovie event library to a drive other than startup? I love the idea of being able to periodically sync my iMovie events to FCPX, but it's not going to be possible if those events are required to live on my startup disk.
Thanks for any help,
- canton

You really don't want to share the Events folder even if you could. If any other application changes (or sometimes even opens) a clip in a FCPX Event, FCPX will offline that clip with no easy way to relink it.
I'm surprised your Android phone footage isn't supported; what is the codec/format? Have you tried importing it after copying the files to the hard drive and using "Import Files" as opposed to importing from the "camera" directly?
My strong recommendation would be to keep the Events separate; use iMovie for android footage only, and FCPX for everything else. When FCPX supports the footage in the way you want, import them at that time and start using FCPX exclusively.

  • How do you Move an iMovie '08 Project to Another Mac?

What's the best way to move an iMovie '08 project to another Mac on my network? (Both Macs have iMovie '08.) Specifically, is there an easy way to move a project and the event containing the imported clips in one step?
Often, I'll do work on my Intel MacBook then transfer stuff to my Intel iMac for long term storage. In iMovie '08, I tried various imports and exports and nothing worked so well. For example, when you drag and drop a project file from one computer to another the clips don't come with it. You can play the movie but the clips in the media browser are grayed-out.
There ought to be something like the archive routine that packages up everything and lets you put it on another computer for further editing.
    Thanks!

I would like to know the same thing but not for another Mac... just another user. Should be almost the same procedure right?
My iMovie '08 is crashing like crazy! I just want to get the projects into iMovie using a fresh user and hope that fixes it. I can see where copying/moving preferences into the library of the other user (along with duping the projects in the movies folder) might succeed in opening the project in another user. I'm just afraid of moving bad prefs or something.

  • How do you move iPhoto to an external hard drive?

I want to move iPhoto and possibly iTunes to an external hard drive to free up space on my MacBook Pro. How do you do this?

Copy /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library to your external drive. Delete the one on your internal drive. Now create an alias to the iPhoto Library's new location and put the alias in the original location. Be sure the alias is named "iPhoto Library".

  • How do you move a library to a different account?

    Hi,
Is there any way to move a library from one account on a Windows XP to another? I have tries many ideas, but none seem to work. Anyone have an idea? It'll be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I have tried consolidating the library and then importing the music from the iTunes Music folder, but then I have to do it one at a time, and there will be annoying numbers in front of the song.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!!!!!!!!!!  YOU DID IT!  I cannot believe it!
I changed "Move To Trash" to "Move to Trash" and selected a file.  I had lost all hope, so I took a minute to prepare myself for yet another moment of deep frustration.  Then I pressed F10, and bang! the file was trashed!!!  It took me a couple minutes to actually believe what just happened.  Thank you so much!  If I could, I would "like" you as many times as I can physically hit the "Liked" button!
PS: what the heck is wrong with Apple though???  Wrong instructions, incorrect help instructions on their own site.  The chances of figuring this out before having a nervous breakdown were like one in a million (approximately, I did not actually do the math).  Last week, the keyboard and the trackpad stopped responding on my brand new macbook pro for a couple hours. I was not the only one with this problem.  Apparently, this was from a design flaw, which means it could happen again at any time.  iMovie doesn't work.  TextEdit keeps crashing all the time.  Emptying the trash can take hours.
Since 2000, I bought a PMac G4 Quicksilver, a used PMac G3 Blue, a used iBook G4, a used Pismo PBook G3, a used Graphite iMac G4, a used iMac G3 (green, 233MHz I think) and I already had more problems with this brand new macbook pro than will all the other macs combined...  For such an expensive machine, with 16GB of RAM, that's a little dissapointing, especially from Apple.  Maybe I'm just not lucky.
Anyways, thanks again!  Best moment of 2014!

  • ?: How do you move files to an external hard drive

    Hello everyone,
    I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5
I am starting to run out of internal HD space as my images in Photoshop are very large (over 1 GB ea.)
I currently use an external hard drive for Time Machine but would like to use a different external hard drive just to have my photo images on it.
Im assuming that i would purchase another external hard drive formatted for mac, plug it into my MBP and simply drag my image files from my MBP onto the external hard drive icon. After that just delete the images from my MBP HD. Is that all there is to it?
I wasnt sure if there was a step in there where you have to tell your MBP that the new external hard drive is NOT for Time Machine, but is simply to transfer image files onto (?)
Please let me know if this is how it works and how to do this.
best to you all and thanks so much for your help
    take care,
    rick

    Rick,
the “EDIT” note in my last response was an “oh yeah, I should mention this” moment that I’d had after initially responding with my single “yup” sentence. You had mentioned that you were already using Time Machine to back up your internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I’d wanted to clarify that your new external hard disk should not be simultaneously used as a Time Machine backup drive; it should be treated just like your internal hard disk, in that it gets backed up by Time Machine (a “source” drive) rather than receives Time Machine backups (a “destination” drive), which your current external hard drive already does.
As far as my recommendations, I’ve had good results with the Hitachi hard drive series with five-year warranties. I’m currently using a Samsung 840 PRO SSD as my internal disk; so far, so good, but I don’t have long-term experience with it yet. (The 840 PRO has a five-year warranty also. As you can tell, I prefer drives with long warranties.) Since you have a 2009 MacBook Pro, getting your new drive in an external enclosure with a FireWire 800 port (and getting a FireWire 800 cable for it, of course) will allow the best performance when reading from or writing to it. Since it will be holding large images, performance will probably be an important criterion for you.
To set up your new external drive to be backed up by Time Machine, plug it in to your MacBook Pro, open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences, unlock the lock in the lower left corner if it shows a locked padlock,  press the “Options…” button in the lower right corner, and make sure that your new external drive is not in the list of drives excluded from being backed up. If it’s not there, then you should be good. If it is there, then you’ll need to select it and press the “-” button to “subtract” it from the list of excluded drives.

  • How do you move video files from external hard drive?

I moved video files that were originally from Flip Video recorder and uploaded to my Macbook to an external hard drive to save space.  However, I can't seem to figure out how to get them back onto my computer, so I can start burning DVDs.  I tried dragging and dropping, but that doesn't seem to work.  Please help!!

  • How do you make an iMovie HD movie full screen in Keynote presentation?

    Hey everybody, and Happy Holidays!
I have a presentation tomorrow morning where I will be using a VGA connector to a video projector to present my Keynote presentation. I have tried just about every way I know how to make my imported iMovie HD film full screen during the Keynote presentation, but so far the best I can do is making the slides the 1024 size, which still leaves a black background above and below the movie when it is playing.
Basically, what can I do to make my iMovie film full screen in Keynote?
    Thanks!
    -Randy

First off, I'd be a bit worried if the movie wouldn't play in Quicktime Player -- that's pretty odd, since QT is essentially what Keynote is using for playback as well.
If you have a new MacBook, then its display's "native" resolution is 1280 X 800, which is pretty much HD (which is 1280 X 720). By way of working through this, I'd first set your screen to 1280 X 800, and then set the slide size in Keynote to 1280 X 720 (which is one of the default sizes, precisely because it fits HD). If you do this, and if you set your movie as wide as it will go and centred, then it will leave 40 pixels at the top and bottom of the display when you play the presentation. There is no way around this, as it is simply the case that the height of the movie in pixels is less than the height of the screen. If you tried to fit the movie onto all of the screen, you'd either have to blow it up so that the top and bottom were at the screen edge, which would cut off the left and right parts of the movie (this is like what is done in "pan-and-scan" or "full-screen" DVDs of theatre films), or you'd have to "stretch" the movie vertically, which would distort it.
Complicating all of this is your projector. Even if it is just mirroring your display, if it is a digital projector, it too has its own "native" resolution, and unlike your MacBook, it is very unlikely to be a 16:9 ratio, but rather a 4:3 ratio (800 X 600, or 1024 X 768). So even if you hook up your 1280 X 800 MacBook, the projector will still at best project a squarer image, which may show up as narrow bands of darkness above and below your "mirrored" display.
In short form: there is no way to avoid the black bands -- they arise because the movie isn't as tall as the display, and there's no way around that.

  • Import iMovie event movie

I have some Events media files from iMovie '08. Not a movie. Not a Project. I just captured them a while ago. This is one of the QT files.
    clip-2007-02-13 12;11;01.dv
I this still in a format that FCE can import?
    Thanks,
    Sonny

More questions about importing iMovie Event files (not a movie, just an Event)
I am using miniDV tape. Easy Setup: DV-NTSC. Here is the file type in iMovie:
    clip-2007-02-13 12;11;01.dv
I opened it in QT Pro with the following info from Inspector:
    Format: DV 720 x 480 (640 x 480), DV Stereo, 32.000 kHz
    FPS: 29.97
    Data Rate:54.54 mbits/s
    Normal Size: 640 x 480
**What does Normal Size mean? **
So, the mismatch with FCE is the audio (DV-NTSC)
Tom's book said (hope I'm not misrepresenting) that it's best to convert prior to Import.
I can do this in QT Pro and Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie (.mov)-But I think that I read that .mov is NOT acceptable to FCE for import. How do I just convert the audio mismatch?
If I choose AIFF, will that take care of the video also?
Options: I think that I got the audio settings from Tom's book (FCE 3.5), the same as for Exporting audio: AIFF? on Pg 115?
For the video settings, I need some guidence:
    Compression Type: ????
    Frame Rate: assume 29.97
    Compressor Quality: ???
    Encoding: ? Best Quality ??
    Data Rate: ? Automatic ???
    Key Frames: ??????
While converting, can I use Mono to decrease file size?
Would it be possible for someone to take pity and list the settings for video and audio to convert these .dv files for FCE using QT Pro?
    Thanks a bundle.

How do you move your music within itunes from your regular library to the homeshares library so that you can import it to your new computer?

You do not have to move it as such. Here are the steps to setup HomeSharing
    1) Ctrl B to turn on the top menu
    2) File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share enter your apple id and password, click create
    3) repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other computer and create home share using the same apple id and password
On your new machine if you have turned on the left hand sidebar the Shared Library should be about halfway down like this.
Select the songs you want and click import at the bottom right. If you want all songs then I would select one song nad Ctrl A to select all
Finally if you have a lot of songs to transfer Switch off the wifi on the old computer. Leave the wifi on the new one. Connect with an ehternet network cable. The copying speed is way faster.
Click import and grab a coffee

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?  I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:

welcome argardner to the  boards..
you're missing the concept of iM .. you don't move 'files' from Event to Project Library.. Events is the big box of all your imported clips; now, from that box of bricks, you drag the clips into all kind of projects.. you can 're-use' the same clip again'n again in many projects.. you can use all clips of all Events in one Project.. or all clips of one Event in two projects.. or..
    spend some time here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMovie08_GettingStarted.pdf
the concept of Events & Projects, Clips and Libraries is at first glance very different to 'normal' editing apps, but you'll get convenient to it within minutes..

  • How can I move my iMovie app to "purchased" in my appstore account???

how can I move my iMovie app to "purchased" in my appstore account???

I would not recommend that you move iMovie files to the Time Capsule. You will not get sufficient performance for editing. For this reason, iMovie does not show the Time Capsule as an attached drive within iMovie.
If you move these files using the Finder, you will likely make the projects unusable, because the links between the projects and events will be broken.
Use a locally attached external hard drive tha is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
See this User Tip for how to move the Events and Projects to a locally attached drive. (By locally attached, I mean a drive that is attached to your Mac via USB, Firewire, or Thunderbolt cables.)

  • Importing iMovie Events/Projects to FCP X?

Hi I am a complete newbie to the MAC forums. Apologies in advance for the long winded post!
    Past:
I have been a Windows / Video Studio user for many years. (Win 7, Q6600 cpu, 8gb RAM)
I principally make DVD's of slideshows, interspersed with video and with a music background for myself, businesses and friends.
I'm not a "Pro" by any stretch of the imagination but I've been successfully making reasonable quality output.
    Now
I've moved to the Mac and as my profile shows I've bought a reasonable machine - iMac 27", 16gb RAM, i7 3.4gHz cpu, AMD Radeon HD 6970M (2GB) and 1TB main drive and 3TB external drives.
I have iMovie '11 and (after reading extensive reviews) just purchased FCP X to see if I can -
Utilize the 64bit the iMac is capable of; and
give myself more flexibility for creativity (VS X3 had heaps of themes, transitions, titling etc)
    Questions
I expected FCP X to import the iMovie Events and Projects hassle free (most bad reviews referred to comparisons with FCP 7 etc.) However when I import the projects -
The iMovie MAPS feature is not supported (this is a real hassle as this was a recent welcome introduction from iMovie '09 on). Apple support suggested I export the whole project to a QT movie then import into FCP X but as I told them I bought FCP X to speed up the process, not to process a 32bit app then import to a 64bit app to do my final output. (Since then my research suggests there is a workaround to the MAPS problem if I just create the Maps in iMove and export to QT and import to FCP X - Why would Apple not just continue this feature in FCP X?
All of my photos appear full screen in iMovie, however when I import to FCP X  some of the photos are significantly smaller i.e. appear in a black frame. Is this a media problem or is FCP X not capable of importing the project in it's iMovie form?
All text frames (as intros to particular groups of photos) lose their formatting and the text is cropped and unreadable.
All this from a product that is purported to "import iMovie Events and Projects". The imported mess I have suggests I'm better off starting from scratch but this means the "import iMovie events" is useless?
Lastly, the plethora of options for output leaves me baffled to say the least. It is not helped because i am not a Pro but even iMovie is difficult to easily produce a high quality DVD for playback on a big screen TV. I try various options, SHARE>Media Browser>LARGE, or 1080p (produces 108 error in iMovie) Then import into iDVD to produce DVD menu and output to Image file prior to burning on SL or DL media. What is the best workflow to produce the best DVD output on a HD TV?
Thanks in advance for any help as time to complete some projects is against me.
    George

    Thanks Tom.
Do I understand correctly that to produce 90 minutes of high quality I need a Blu-ray burner? I follow that DL discs can only produce HD up to 40 minutes and to go beyond that I need a Blu-ray burner and disc.
On advice from Apple Support, I provided feedback for a feature request when I first struck the problem. I'll research the forums more to seek out answers to my questions. I'll have to find the "spatial conform" section. In the meantime I'll finish these projects as best I can in iMovie and then start my learning curve with FCP X as I am probably biting off more than I can chew at the moment.
Patrick and Tom, I appreciate you taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge.
    With thanks,
    George (in Tasmania Australia)
