How do you name capture clips?

What am I doing wrong???
When I capture a clip it names it, "untitled" in the Capture Scratch folder. I save the project before capturing, and it puts it in the right folder, but every clip is called "untitled", "untitled2", etc. I even name the reel, but it doesn't use that name.
It's become such a pain, especially when transferring files. Is there a solution?

You can name the clips in the Capture window. It works with both Capture Now and Capture Clip.
As you type text into the Description, Scene, Shot/Take and Angle fields, FCE builds the actual file name for the clip and displays it in the Name field (which is greyed out, you can't enter text directly into the Name field). You also have to check the checkboxes to the right of each field to have each field included in the clip file name. If you don't enter anything in these fields and/or you don't check any of the checkboxes, FCE defaults to naming your clip "Untitled(n)" where (n) is a number.
Entering a value in the Reel field will not create a file name.

Instead of being able to change the name in the sidebar list of albums, you now have to click on the album you want to re-name then go over to the top of the album viewer and click on the name again. I forget even the technical term for this. I have a lot of short clips I have to move back and forth, and a keyboard shortcut to quickly move them would really be handy.

How do YOU name classes? (object oriented programming)

I am in the process of learning advanced object oriented design, and I am trying to use it in my personal programming project. I'm having a hard time implementing all of the classes I want for it because I can't think of what to call them.
So, my question is, in object oriented design, how do you name the implementations and abstractions that you make?
In other words, "implementations" can be thought of as "classes", and "abstractions" as "interfaces" in Java or "pure abstract classes" in C++. How do you name the classes and interfaces you make?
For example, do you use prefixes or suffixes on your names, such as "I" for "interface" or "Impl" for "implementation"? Do you add "-able" to the end of the name of an abstraction, such as "Decoratable"? Can you always think of simple logical names for all of your classes, and it just has never been a problem for you?
As an example of how the number of classes quickly grows, the Decorator Pattern will use at least five classes. I have no idea what I would name those in a programming project.

How about this: The name of the implementation class will be HOW its implemented followed by the name of the interface.

Indeed, classes are more specific than interfaces, subclasses are more specific as their superclasses... This should be reflected in their names, the name of a class that implements an interface should somehow make clear exactly what it is (e.g. what kind window). If you have a kind of window (for instance) that is really _just_ a window, nothing else, than the interface should become this class and the implementing classes should become subclasses.

How can you export a clip selection from FCPX to motion? Round tripping?

How do you export a clip selection out of FCP into Motion? In Motion, you have the option of exporting a selection out of motion? I don't understand why FCPX does not have this functionality. I do not want to export an effect or transition. FCPX is good, but it looks like the application team have no clue about workflows. Especially integration between FCP and Motion.

Not sure if you are asking a question or having a rant .. also not sure what your point is about it being 2013 ? Roundtripping is not in these apps .. sold for very little (relative to FCS which did roundtripping) and most of the functionality used daily from Motion is now in FCPX in one way or another. Perhaps it would be a 'handy' but to highlight this as some BIG deal is a tad missing the point ... .
What exactly is it you cannot do in FCPX and need to send to Motion to work on ?

1) Move a clip (or any portion thereof) from your Event clip to your project and place it where you need it.
2) With the newly added clip still selected in your project, grasp and move the right and left handles to set the exact frames you wish to use as your "in" and "out" points.
3) Select the "Spit" option to segment the selected area into what you want to keep and what you don't need.
4) Select the segment(s) you don't want and press the "Delete" key to remove it/them from the project window.
5) Repeat as needed to create your sequence of segments and then add titles and transitions as needed.
Note: Since your editing in iMovie '08 is non-linear, non-destructive, and "by-reference," you can source the same content multiple times to a single project or even to multiple projects and overlap your "splits" since they are "logical" rather than physical.

Open iphoto
Drag photo from iphoto to desktop. (you will still maintain the original in iphoto)
Open photo on your desktop in Preview
Click File, Save As.
In Save As , there is a Quality slider to adjust file size.
Save this file to desk top and then right click on the photo icon.
Click on "Get info" to check new file size. Repeat as needed
I find this an easier method than exporting from iphoto

It's listed as a feature numerous times in the forums but I haven't been able to export cut down stock footage as individual clips. Can someone please direct me on how to do so.

Ahhh, yes.
Adobe goofed on this one. When you export a sequence, the default is properly set up for In to Out range. But when you export a clip, the default is Entire Clip. This makes NO sense to me. Why would anyone want to create an exact duplicate? It seems much more likely that exporting a clip, you want only the In to Out far more often.
Unfortunately, there's no way to change this when selecting multiple clips. You can only change that setting when you send a single clip.
Please let Adobe know you want the default for Sequences and Clips to be In/Out range.

I've done a search on the internet and I don't see a simple answer!
I've filmed some stuff which is shaky so I want to do this:
Take the edited clip
Put it in Motion
Stabilize it
Bring it back to FCPX exactly where it is in the timeline
How are you guys doing this? My process of exporting/importing seems very laborious!

Right click a clip or marked portion of it...
When you are finished in Motion, save the project in the same place as your other footage. It should replace the clip on your Timeline automatically.

When video from supported still camera is in iPhoto, iMovie can edit it without any conversion. However, iMovie will not delete any clips that are "owned" by another application such as iPhoto.
If you want you can take the video out of iPhoto and import it into iMovie with the File/Import command. It will then be in iMovie and you can reject certain clips.
For some formats, iMovie may not be able to handle the file. In this case, you need to convert the file to an imovie compatible format before importing. You can generally do this with MPEG Streamclip, but if you open your video in QuickTime Player and click command-I, the inspector will open. You can look next to the word "Format:" and report back what audio and video formats are contained in your video. Than we might recommend some specific conversion (or no conversion).

How do you make a clip slow down

I'm new to final cut so I hope this question(s) isn't too naive. First of all I have imported a clip that has a world turning right before a transition into something else I don't want (ie I only want the world spinning). But whenever I select the range I want, and remove the rest, if drag the desired clip longer the old (unwanted material shows). So clearly I'm not cutting or deleting properly. Assuming I have the clip I want, the other problem is that I'm trying to match it to audio which is considerably longer (like 6 minutes versus 40 seconds). There is no obvious place to cut and make a copy (loop) without it being noticeable, so I thought it might be better to simply make the clip run in slow motion and match the duration to the audio clip. How do you do this?

Simple. Select the clip (or portion of the clip) you want to slow down. Go to the "Modify" menu, then go to "speed." Type in a new percentage (50%, for instance, will make the clip run at half speed). I also suggest checking the "frame blending" box....it should make the slowed-down clip look smoother (you can try it both ways and see what looks best to you). Then render the clip (from the "Sequence" menu) and you're done.

• Put the clips into one new project
• Export this as full quality QuickTime movie
• Import this new merged QT-clip into Your main project
This is a way around that are very basic and used whenever more elaborated scenes are prepared - e.g. multiple text clips or when in need of adding several functions into it.
Tedious - but it always been like this - in contrast to FinalCut.
