How do you nest slices in Photoshop?

One thing I find myself doing frequently when working on websites is making two nested slices for the website header. One is for the whole header graphic, usually moderately compressed - e.g. JPEG level 60 or 70. The other is for just the logo portion of the header, at a higher quality setting. The logo is encompassed entirely within the header, and has a link to the homepage of the site. Rather than assembling the header out of a bunch of puzzle pieces, tables-style, I prefer to use my single whole header image as the header div background, then position my logo within the header div using absolute positioning.
This is fairly easy using old ImageReady. One manual slice for the whole header, another slice for the logo. Turn off one while exporting the other, to avoid any unexpected chopping up. Unfortunately in Photoshop it doesn't seem to be possible to turn slices off. So how to do this? Do I save a whole separate copy of my file just so I can have two slices in the same area that don't overlap? Or save one slice, delete the slice, make the second slice and save it? Or perhaps make my file bigger and duplicate (copy merged) the header area - or the logo area - so I can have the two slices side by side?
Anyone have any reasonable practices for dealing with slices that need to occupy the same physical space in a file? Aside from resorting to the dog's breakfast that is Fireworks, that is (with apologies and a certain amount of respect to anyone who can stand that program).

Am new to CS5 and I discovered something quite accidently. In Essentials under styles I learned of these little boxes with dots around them and you could drag that over to your picture and a nice screen would appear over your photograph--much like the comic book effect if you did sketch and stamp and sketch and half tone, but this was an already made screen. I went down the styles looking for how those dots formed into a screen where it would lay over your entire photograph. I'm not sure how I was able to get that effect, but any of those boxes I clicked on would have that screen with different sized dots. How do you do that with some skill?

This is more of a correct answer that you gave than I have elsewhere been able to decipher. I tried clicking some of the styles, but I just didn't find the style that gave the screen effect. I was thinking it might be textured brushes as that paints on a screen of dots, but it doesn't do that correctly like the first time--where I just clicked the style and the screen of dots appeared. A guy by the name of Alex Summersby in Practical Photoshop talked about getting this effect by posterized layer, to filter-sketch-stamp and then duplicate layer to filter-sketch-halftone pattern--which you can do just a little better with your idea of the pixelate. So in that sense the answer to the question is correct as far as getting the result that I wanted. But I was never able to figure out how to do it by clicking on one of the styles and getting white dots or grey dots and black dots. This will take some additional figuring out. I used to move brushes in Windows 7 just by dragging them to the photo I wanted them on -- super easy. Now with Windows 8, it won't let me do that. How do you work with brushes in Windows 8?

Hyperlinks are only available when you create slices. The option panel for the selected slice allows you to type in a hyperlink.

I have an old laptop with Photoshop elements 5.0 and wanted to move that program to my newer PC but the program was too old so I bought and loaded Photoshop Elements 13 on my PC. To import my photos from the 5.0 I did a full backup on a flash drive and then loaded the pictures to the PC with 13. The pictures are there but none of my collections from 5.0. I read the manual and said I was supposed to be prompted to convert old catalogs. I was never prompted and do not know how to transfer my collections in my catalog from 5.0 to the 13.

What you are doing is not only to install a newer version of PSE, it's also to migrate to a new computer.
The general solution is to do a full organizer backup on an external drive and do an organizer restore to the new computer (or new drive).
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
The problem is that since PSE5 is an old version working with a different database engine, you must first use a conversion utility to create a PSE13 version.

How do I update slices in photoshop without losing the links in Dreamweaver??

I have designed a website in photoshop and everything is sailing smoothly. The only problem I have is that everytime I try to update the layout in photoshop I lose all the links I had put to the slices in dreamweaver. This happens even if am just adding a single word to the layout in photoshop and sav it for web. the website has many many links and everytime I update the site means I have to put the links on all over again and it is a chao as they are over 100 links....
Is there a way to update the layout in photoshop and still have the slices with their links in dreamweaver?? I also lose all my DIV tags when I update the site...

Sounds like you're exporting Save as type: HTML and Images, which will overwrite your modified HTML (anchors etc) in your web page every time.
When you export the slices, try exporting Save as type: Images Only, so that only the image get exported and your modified HTML (anchors etc) stays intact.
Provided your slice names and dimensions don't change, only the sliced images will update and your page layout will remain intact.

How do you overcome problems using Photoshop Elements with Win 7 and Eyefinity display?

I have a 3 screen Eyefinity setup on a PC running 64bit Win 7 with 16gb RAM and an AMD Radeon 7950 graphics card and Phenom II x4 processor.
I struggle to get a stable PSE10 to work on this setup.
I bought a combined set of Photoshop and Premier Elements 10 and although installed it always crashed when I saved images with the error message "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 has stopped working". I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 and decided I had to solve the Photoshop problem.
I installed Premier 64 bit version from disk 2 and Photoshop Elements from disk 1 and then ran compatability checker. Under compatability settings for Win XP srv pack 3 it starts although with some toolbar errors and top and bottom of screen transparent instead of solid. I can save files worked on but then still get the error when I exit Photoshop Elements.
Has anyone had similar and solved the problem? Tech Support said my s/w was too old and unsupported without a service contract.

There should be no need for compatibility mode; pse10 is designed to run on W7. Try making a direct shortcut for the Editor. You can then launch the program directly from the desktop bypassing the welcome screen. This is generally better as the welcome screen leaves background processes running.
Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
Then click the browse button and navigate to:
"C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
Then click Next; then click Finish
To launch, try right-clicking on the new desktop icon and choose “Run As Administrator” which often improves stability.

afaik LR chooses it´s own primary editor based on registry entries on windows and preference files on mac.
generally the default will be the newest version of photoshop, and if it can’t find photoshop, it’ll use photoshop elements instead.
if photoshop is already open, it will ignore it´s own preference and will use the open version instead.

The book says to load files as layers select(in Bridge) tools/photoshop/Load files into photoshop Layers.
There is no Photoshop Option in the Tools Menu in my Bridge CC.

How can you open a PSDX Photoshop Touch file in PS cs6?

I've looked at some video and they talk about downloading a plugin for CS5x and that one isn't needed for PS CS6 w/ the ACC. I can see the psdx file but PS will not open it saying it is the wrong file type. Do I first need to export the file from PSTouch as a JPG? Can someone direct me to a specific Help Resource URL please. Thanks.

Sometimes Adobe Help and Adobe TV is not up to date or at least not very clear to me. So here is the simple answer after playing and experimenting with PST. I am unable to save or export any image OUT of PST except as a PSDX file and PS CS6 will not open a PSDX file without a plugin. Following the instructions on AdobeTV and/or the help files in PST tells you to download a plugin AFTER signing in to the Cloud, but there is no download link as per the example. SO..... to get a PSDX file to open in PS CS6 do the following.
1) Open the Adobe Application Manager
2) Select the Touch Apps Plugins
3) Allow it to download and install
4) When complete open PS FROM the Windows START menu. You will think something is wrong because it will be minutes before it opens. Everything is ok it just takes a while for the plugin to register with PS CS6 the first time.
5) You can now open PSDX files in PS CS6.
As for the usefulness of PST..eh I guess it's ok. Like most things related to Adobe Cloud Apps and Services it needs help. The one advantage I can see is that I do not need a seperate app to open a NEF file other than that..eh, I've seen better apps. With that said let's not forget that Adobe IS trying and will get better with time and money. Look at it this way, when PST first came out it only supported iPad then it was worked on to support Android 8.9" tablets now it works on 7" Androids. Eventually, it will be a lite version of PS where you can work on the file both in PS and on the go without having to save your layers as individual files and some other features and functions it currently lacks.
Stay with it Adobe eventually you'll have a superior product worth the $10 if not more. You can do it guys, I have confidence in you. You've come a long way since May, tech wise, it's just your marketing people that drive hype too much so that us loyal users have too high of an expectation.

What is this art style & how do you mimic it in photoshop?

Does anyone know what "style" of art this is (high contrast "pure" black and white)? I've seen descriptors such as "stamp" & "serigraph", but my google searches don't indicate that this is really the right answer. It's probably some subset of "pop art", but that's much too general of a descriptor.
