Having trouble opening a winmail.dat attachment sent from someone using Outlook for their mail server. Do I need a special application to open this attachment?

Winmail. dat file is attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary format called TNEF. Being a non-standard attachment format, users from other e-mail clients (like Thunderbird or Lotus Notes) or platforms (like Android, Apple, iPad or iPhone) cannot natively read them. The operating system may be the same but the Numbers applications are likely different. You need to get the apps in sync. Unfortunately, the Numbers (and Pages as well) saga is pretty confusing (and frustrating). Here's some info from the iWork resident version expert (PeterBreis0807):
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.

You could ask whoever sent it to you to resend the email, but not in rich text format : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1506
Otherwise there are a number of apps in the store that say that they support winmail.dat (search for 'winmail.dat')

That's a Microsoft extension. For frequent email senders, you can request they stop sending the Microsoft-specific stuff; messages that aren't directly readable by other mail clients. The fault lies with Microsoft Outlook, the email client you are using on your PC. The Winmail.dat file is used to preserve Rich Text formatting. Outlook uses it when sending a Rich Text-formatted message. During transport, the content of the message may be changed, preventing the receiving client from being able to read the formatting instructions. In other cases, the receiving client does not use or recognize the winmail.dat file.
The data in a winmail.dat file is not usable (without conversion see below). To resolve this issue within Outlook, send the messages in plain text format. You can change the format of the email messages that you send from Outlook by using the following steps:
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Mail Format.
In Compose in this message format, click to select Plain Text, and then click OK.
Did I mention that I detest Outlook. It's not your fault. The gentlemen idiots at Microsoft make the egregious assumption that all your recipients all use Outlook, and don't adequately inform users that they have to change settings to communicate with the rest of the world.
You can also use TNEF "enough" (which is easier than getting your senders to behave LOL)

How do you open a book on your library shelf?

Adobe digital editions is unnecessarily difficult to use. It doesn't have to look like a library it just has to work. I cannot seem to open a book or change the list on the shelf. I want to change the order of the list and cannot do that. Listen guys just make it easier. Highlight your choice, select it and voila open it...and start reading. ? I downloaded a book and can't open it ---then all the way on the right side of the page it says missing. How is it missing? It is on my list.

I tried that but only had 3 choices.....open, delete and sometig else I can't see right now. anyway...programmers should lie writers consider wh0 they are writing for. Some of us, (and who are people who read most?Oldsters, invalids, those who are not physically active) are stay at home and older and not so computer savvy. If your program is too convoluted for lots of people , your product will not get used and your company will not make any money. Your product will fall by the waside infavor of more easily used programs.
I will work it out because I am not the type to give up. But I will not enjoy it. Thanks for your help.

Don't panic! Things aren't that bad.... We all expect programs to work in a certain way, based on what we thinkthey should do and how they should do it. BUT - we're users, notprogrammers, so what THEY think is what WE have to work with. So, how harda program is to use has a lot to do with the differences in viewpoint arebetween the programmers and you. You can ease the pain by reading the HELPsection in ADE (F1 key from Library view), which has explanations of how itworks. You can change the display order in Library mode easily. The upper rightcorner of the screen has a box that shows you how the library items arebeing displayed now. Put your cursor on the small arrow next to it. Clickon that arrow, and a drop-down box will show you what your options are -all seven of them. If an ebook is 'missing', it could be that the download process did notfinish correctly. That could happen for a number of reasons beyond thecontrol of ADE, including disconnection before the ebook was finalized, a'hiccup' during the download, an issue with the ebook's data and other notso common problems. Try deleting the title from your Library anddownloading the ebook again. That's all I can suggest, because I haven'tfound a way to 'fix' that situation without doing another download. ============

Backup iTunes and the media on your computer the same way you would any other data on your computer.
External hard drives are a good option, copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the external drive.
