How do you (or can you) play songs from your ipod on itunes?

Im trying to play my the songs on my iPod with itunes that I just installed on my friends laptop. The problem is, the place where it says Charles's (me) Laptop, the songs are all grayed out and I cant select any of them.

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. Check out the links below and make the change on your own computer before you connect it to the second one:

Managing Your Songs Manually
Some additional info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Is it possible to import songs from your ipod to itunes?

Somehow, my itunes got screwed up on my pc. So, I am missing about 100 songs. The songs are all on my ipod because I haven't synced them in a while. Is it possible to import the songs from my ipod into itunes? If so, how do I do it?
To make matters more complicated, my itunes now says that the ipod is synced to a different itunes, so if I sync them up, the songs on the ipod will be replaced by the songs on itunes (causing me to lose those 100 songs). Can anyone please help me?

If you're using iTunes 7, you can copy music that you purchased from the iTunes Store back to iTunes directly. You will have to prevent automatic synchronization. While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys in Windows. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
If you're not using iTunes 7 or want to copy other tracks, the easiest way will be to search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your PC.
It's also possible to do this manually, but the procedure is rather involved. If you're interested, though, see this thread:

  • Can't play songs from nano while in iTunes

When my nano is connected to my PowerBook G4, all of the songs on the nano are displayed, but they are grayed-out and I can't play them or add more songs to the nano or anything. Is this how it's supposed to work?
    Thanks in advance!
    Anton & Celia

Thats the same way that the mini works/worked... you've set up the iPod to sync with a playlist or your Library and it 'locks' the iPod... If you want to change whats on the iPod you alter the playlist's on your computer that the iPod is sync'd to (just dont delete the songs from your library)... Next time you dock the 'pod it'll update the change in songs.
If you want to have it unlocked you set it up on your computer to not 'auto-update'. The songs then will not be grey-ed out and it works more like a conventinal play list as in you drag and drop onto the iPod icon and delete from the iPod itself.
I think that if you pluged it into someone else's computer you cant play the songs because they don't own them (have the same library). I know you can do that of the full size iPod but not of the Shuffle (it gives you a message about the other computer's library being different and you'll have to wipe your iPod if you want to use the new library) I haven't tried with my mini. There are programs that let you take music off your iPod, but I'm Australia and I don't know if they're legal where you are (technically iPods or even iTunes aren't even legal in Australia)
Dont change the FAT32 format of your nano.

  • Removing songs from your iPod?

I've heard of software that allows you to remove songs from your iPod. anybody know if this exists? i went to the macstore and they sold me on Tune Transfer which allows you to upload songs from an ipod to my mac but the songs remain on the iPod. thanks

    Kristin,
sounds like the software transfers a copy of the song to your computer. Check your hard drive for the music (most likely in your iTunes Music folder) and if your music is in there, you can then delete the songs from your iPod using iTunes.

  • How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud

How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud and will only be available on this computer"?
You must surely be able to add and subtract songs on specific playlist?

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

  • How do you choose songs from your ipod instead of from the car dashboard while your ipod is plugged into your car?

How do you choose songs from your ipod instead of from the car dashboard while your ipod is plugged into your car?

It depends on your car stereo. On the JVC we have you can select either "Head Mode" or "iPod Mode" when you're plugged into the USB port. Ipod Mode lets you select the songs from the iPod although the radio still controls the volume. I believe the Alpine I have does the same thing.

  • Can you hook up your iPod Touch 4th generation with an HDMI cable to your HDTV and play videos from your iPod to the TV?

I'm trying to find out if I can hook up my iPod touch 4th gen. iOS 5.0.1 to my HDTV with an HDMI cable and have it mirror what I do on the iPod Touch like mirroring videos for example. I need to find out and if so, how?

You can only output content to your TV if the App you are using supports the TV Out functionality. Mirroring is not supported on the iPod Touch.
If you still want to output content from your iPod to your TV, make sure you have the right cables as described here.

I'm sorry to see that no one has answered this. I'm hoping Apple with reply to my support request, as I'm having the same issue. I really don't want to continue with iCloud at this point.

  • How do you get your songs from your ipod to your computer?

can anyone tell me how to get your songs from your ipod to your computer?

Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If it's a Mac, try Senuti or Music Rescue.

Alright, so my ipod touch stopped working, but I can still connect it to itunes, but my friend gave me his old nano. I was wondering how I could get my more updated songs from my ipod touch onto th nano. My laptop crashed whitch had all my new music, and im afraid if I sync my Ipod touch to the desktop with all my old songs, ill lose all my newer ones which I dont want to happen because I want them on my nano. Im sorry for the confusing topic im just so lost.

All you have to do is connect your new iPod to the computer that has the library for your old iPod.
When iTunes comes up, click on your new iPod under Devices.
At the top of the Summary Page click Music.
    Click Synch Music.
Do the same thing for Photos, Apps, Movies and so on...
    Now just synch the iPod.

Restoring from backup will result in the iPod being like it was when the backup was made. If you restore via iTunes, you have to have all the synced media in your iTunes library since those are not included in the iPod backup.

    Let's double-check your AX's settings...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select your Belkin wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
