How do you outline a stroke in Freehand?

Is there a way, such as could be accomplished with
'Streamline' in older versions of Illustrator, but now is a
built-in capability in Illustrator CS2, to outline a stroke in
Freehand so it will be turned into 'flat' artwork (a filled path)
retaining the identical look of the original stroked path but now,
it becomes no longer a stroke but a filled object.
Hope I explained that correctly.
TIA,
Ken

Select the stroke you want to outline, then choose "Expand
Stroke" under the Xtras/Path Operationsmenu. Choose the same width
as the stroke and that's it! Same concept as Illustrator but
different name.
Sorry...I didn't know that it already posted! ;)

  • How do you change the stroke weight of a grouped object?

I get frustrated with having to ungroup objects to change the line thickness. Is there a way of selecting a group of shapes and changing all of there line weights (if the same weight or different weights within the group) to a new line weight in one go?
    Thanks.

You should be able to change the stroke (of all the objects) simply by selecting the group and changing the stroke. Ignore the fact that nothing appears in the stroke window when the group is selected, just use the drop down arrow at the side or type in your own size. If you double click the group it will isolate it (see Isolation Mode in Help) and you can then change the stroke of individual objects without ungrouping. Double click away from the group to exit Isolation Mode.

  • How do you delete a member in outline?

    Hi,
I am sure this question has been asked many times in this forum but I can't seem to find the answer. Also, it seems to me that this forum does not retrieve threads that are older than 2 years.
When I tried to delete a member in outline, I get the error message"Deletion of member "Working" failed as member is used in a data form"
how do you delete a member in outline that is already used in a FORM?
I guess I will have to do the following steps:
+Find the object name in the Object table by doing a query – “Where object name = member”
Write down Member ID of the oultine-member you want to delete
Go to "HSP_UNIQUE_NAMES" table found in SQL.
    Delete the row.
    Do a refresh
Then delete that member in the following tables:
    HSP_MEMBER
    HSP_MRU_MEMBERS(System 9 Only)
    HSP_OBJECT
(no need to do anything in HSP_DIMENSION)
Go to each form and change the old member name to new member name.
Can anyone confirm the steps above?

how do you delete a member in outline that is already used in a FORM?Hi,
You have to remove the member from the form first and then delete the member, there is no point trying to hack the tables as they have constraints on them, so you can't delete a member before it is removed from a form.

  • How do you change the tab outline color

How do you change the tab outline color?  I wish to use a black style on my test program but the tab features have a white edge on the top and left sides to try and give a 3d look.  I've tried playing with the windows style but had no success.  Does anyone know how to remove this or change the color?  The closest I have got so far is setting a windows 7 basic theme which removes the 3d look.  This does however give a white background on the tab pages which I cannot find a way of changing in either CVI or windows.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Solved!

    Chris,
Unfortunately, this border is only customizable through the Windows theme. Changing the theme to the basic is likely going to be the closest to what you are looking for without creating a custom theme for Windows.

  • How do you open FreeHand MX files in Leopard?

Adobe said that installing and using FreeHand MX in Leopard is not recommended. Since Illustrator CS3 only has partially success in opening FreeHand files how are you supposed to open them? Sherlock is gone from Leopard. All you saw were traces of his leaving when you upgraded.
As far as Airport goes, check the Network Preferences and under Advanced be sure you have the correct boxes checked or unchecked as needed. Then see what happens.
What seems unstable about Leopard? Mine seems stable as a rock on my old MBP.

you can use one tween to move your line from the side of the screen, then another (shape) tween to bend it into a circle.  you will probably need to use shape hints for the 2nd tween.

  • How do I auto set stroke weight, stroke colors & fill color?

    Hi,
I'd like to make it easier for our 100,000 designers to use AI to make custom products using a laser cutter.
    Current Practice
Designers open our AI laser cutting design templates, add their designs using the AI settings our online pricing system can read, then upload their designs to our website for instant pricing, making and shipping.
    The Problem
Designers have to manually setup AI with settings that can be read by our online pricing system. If they get these settings wrong, our system can not read their designs. So they are rejected and can not be priced or made. This happens more often that you'd imagine.
    The Solution
Designers do not like design rejections. So I'd like to eradicate them by providing our designers with a version of AI that provides the following settings only:
    * Set document to RGB
    * Stroke weight = 0.01mm
    * Stroke colors = RGB 0, 0, 255 and 255, 0, 0
    * Fill color = RGB 0, 0, 0
This will mean designers have a very limited number of AI choices, with nothing to distract them or to get wrong. Which will result in less (or zero?) design rejections. And products made faster than before. Rejoice!
    Question
How do we program our AI laser cutting design templates so that when they are opened in AI, they auto set AI settings as defined above?
    Thanks so much.
    Derek

Your first point - yes, that's what our system does currently. As a result designers get lots of 'how to fix' messages as a result of design rejections. We wish to reduce these rejections and resulting 'how to fix' messages by limiting their choices in AI - because this is where the problems are created.
Ok, yeah gotcha, so customers/designers think they do it right (cough/laugh) upload, then get surprised to find out they didn't by your upload system. That's kind of what I thought. I feel your pain. ;-) I sense you want to reduce this aspect to keep the customers/designers happy and thinking they do nothing but work magic all day right? ;-) So you don't want to lose customers in the midst of frustration of file rejection thinking there files are right and your system is certainly wrong, when in fact it's the opposite. Good luck explaining that to a designer however, right? ;-)
    Ponoko wrote:
Your second point - You go on to talk about using a complex "action" we could distribute within the design templates. Although I suspect this is different, the path we're thinking is to include something in the templates that, when imported into AI, sets AI with the color palette we need, line weight we need. Possible?
As Monika hinted at you can't rigidly restrict or control what a user is allowed to do and use in Illustrator. You can try to reduce the parameters by saving the file as a Template.ait file, but even then they can muck about all day until they mess things up again, plus you have no control whatsoever even then as to whether they use fills, the stroke weights, etc. That is why I mentioned various things to manipulate the file once they deem it completed and ready to submit/upload. Basically a method to fix what they messed up or did incorrectly and instead set things as they should be for submission as I previously mentioned. I mentioned you may be able to create a complex Illustrator "action" action.aia that they run to process these requirements. I am not sure if such an action could be accomplished as all inclusive (perhaps though) otherwise you could as stated do it through scripting and a script they run: script.jsx to prepare the requirements, or an actual standalone helper app you create and provide like I mentioned above as well.
I see for CorelDRAW & Inkscape you require SVG, why not change that for Illustrator also so all your 2D app submissions are SVG based? Then manipulate the SVG server side, point out the changes and why and have the customer approve the new modified SVG Preview of the needed changes and move along with the process from there? Make all the requirement changes on the server by manipulating the SVG. You should have access to all of the requirements: RGB color model, stroke weight, stroke colors, fill colors, create font outlines, image tracing? I am just tossing out ideas here, get your programmers busy, tell them to stop playing video games and "make it so". ;-)
But even so, this then begs the question: What are you doing to circumvent the same issues for inept CorelDraw and Inkscape users?
Since, they have the same freedom to do things incorrectly and misaligned with the requirements, just as Illustrator users do.
Regardless though of the approach customers/designers may not like seeing certain things changed even minutely in trivial amounts and thusly be just as upset or up in arms with the changes to their pretty design files that they think were not needed in the first place, how dare you undermine them ;-). Same as seeing the file rejection from your system upon upload. Again I feel your pain. You have your Application/File requirements requirements stated nicely and plainly, it should be pretty easy for most, but sadly I guess not.

  • Creating a shape outline without stroke

I'm creating navigational elements in photoshop and I want to be able to adjust the outline by itself, as well as there are some elements that are only an outline with no fill. How do I create shape outlines without the fill?
    Adobe Photoshop CS4, PC.

they changed this a few times, on one version there was a stroke style option to do it.
the earlier versions there was a long winded way of
    1. Draw your rounded rect etc with the tool
    2. Ctrl-select that layer to select the shape
    3. Create a new layer
    4. Edit -> Stroke... to create the outline
    5. Delete the original shape
    another was was Select->Modify->Border
don't forget there is a stroke from the drop down menus not just in effects, this is what you need when you want a stroke on a stroke on a stroke etc

  • CS6 : How to convert a path stroke in a vector shape ?

    Hello,
When you use the Photoshop CS6 new function stroke on the path of a vector shape, how can you convert the result in a vector shape ?
Merging multiple vector shapes doesn't work. The strokes outlines are not vectorized in the new vector shape.
It's possible to convert in pixel and keep the stroke drawing, but no way to convert in vector.
Illustrator has a similar function in order to vectorize the stroke.
    Thanks for your help

    Yes, I misunderstood.
Photoshop has no command to directly create a new vector path from the outline of a stroke.
You could try making Path from Selection. With the Shape on a white background, click on the pink with the Magic Wand Tool with options as shown below:

My apologies, gourav5341, I neglected to say that I'm running CS2, PS version 9.0. Selecting the Shape tool in that version doesn't bring up a set of Stroke Options, and I can't find a "no fill" option anywhere
    I did wonder.
Select the rectangular shape tool, and in the options bar near the left hand end, use the drop-down and select Path.
Drag out a rectangle the required size.
Select the Type tool and nice fat font like Arial Black.
Hover the cursor over the path until the normal Type cursor changes to:
Put your finger on the minus key, and hold till you have a dozen or so dashes.
OK them, and double click to select them again.
Now open the Character panel and adjust the tracking — which looks like:
...to give you the required spacing.  Also adjust font size and weight etc.
Now just hold down the dash key till your path is full.
You can also fill the work path with a brush shape if you have a particular dash in mind.

  • How Do You Trace Numbers In Illustrator CS3

    Hey guys,
I am stuck! I am very much a newbie with Illustrator although from what I have used I love it.
I am currently in the process of designing a sticker which is to be cut from Vinyl and I am wanting to know what I must do to Numerical/ Alpha characters to register their outlines as cuts.
I figure I could go round and trace all my characters and create paths that way, although this seems very time consuming and a primitive method which I highly doubt is necessary in such a program as Illustrator to execute what should be a pretty straight forward job.
I though that turning off the fill on the characters and registering a stroke would register as a cut, although my plotter operator says not!
SO my question is how do you create paths (which will reguster as cuts) from numbers/ letters WITHOUT induvidually tracing each character?
    Thanks guys,
    Tobi

Type, Create Outlines. Now you have converted live type to vectors.
There's no need to change the fill of the characters. Turn off the preview (Cmd-Y) and you'll see what you've got.
If perchance some of the characters overlap it's not a bad idea to do a Pathfinder Unite on them. That way you get rid of unnecessary paths.

  • How do you type multiple lines on a path? (label for top slope of bottle)

Ill describe the best I can...
I am making a label that will wrap around the top half of a bottle, the part that slopes to the spout.  Because of this, the label is actually shaped more like an arch so when it goes onto the bottle, it will look more straight.  The top part of the label of course will be a tighter arch than the bottom half.  This is part of why its hard to make things look right.  I know I can bend a line at the same angle and type on it and it looks right but I have a paragragh I have to do this with, about 5 lines worth.  I dont want to have to make a different path line for each one because that would be a nightmare to get each line perfect with each other.  Is there a way to do the "type on a path" to work with multiple lines at once?

    Scott Falkner wrote:
You can't. Each line of text requires an explicit path. You could draw the top line and the bottom line, then make a three-step blend between the two. Expand the blend then link the paths so that text from path 1 flows to path 2, and so on. In the example below each path is linked to the one below. I only needed to paste text into the top path. I was able to link to each following path by clicking on the red + at the end of the previous path, then clicking on the path below.
You could also design the label flat and use a distortion envelope or Warp effect to bend it. This is how I have done such labels in the past. That method requires more experimentation, but makes edits easier.
That seems to be something that might work out.  How do you separate each of the strokes from the blend to make them typable though?
