How do you pay with an iTunes gift card after you redeem it?

I redeemed an iTunes gift card, and then I went to buy a tv show. I was directed to a page to edit my payment method. How do I buy the tv show with the money from the gift card?

What exactly happens when you try to buy a programme, what messages do you see on the screen ? (If you are trying to gift the programme then you will need to enter card details, your balance can't be used for gifting.)
If this is the first time that you've tried to use the account to download something then unless the instructions on this page were followed when creating an account : Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store - you should be able to remove your card's details after entering them
