How do you permanently delete iPhoto pictures in OS X 10.9?

A few months ago we upgraded our 2010 Macbook Pro to the latest software. We moved a bunch of stuff to an external harddrive, reinstalled the disks, and upgraded it. When we deleted pictures off of it then, you went to the pictures folder and deleted everything. Well, my computer is getting full again and I'm trying to make some space. I moved 80gb of photos to my external hard drive. When I deleted those pictures from iPhoto (and iPhoto trash), they're still on the computer somewhere. I can't find them, but I have no more space on my computer. I tried finding my iPhoto cache in my iPhoto folder but couldn't seem to locate it the way it was explained online. All I want to do is delete these pictures.

Silly question but are you seeing the source Mac's drive mounted on the server? What connection type are you using for target disk mode? Thunderbolt? Firewire?
To be honest, building a whole NetRestore setup for 5 more machines is likely not worth your time. Unless this is a lab and you are going to be frequently re-imaging the devices, you might be better served by simply cloning your master to the remaining 5 machines.
Network Image Utility is also notoriously slow. Even a modest 20 GB image over TB will likely take two hours to complete. In that time you could easily clone a DMG of the master and lay it down on the remaining machines. Assuming that you only need the NetRestore for this initial imaging round, this would likely be faster.
Start your master system from its recovery partition or from the thumb drive or other boot volume. Use Disk Utility and select your master drive. Press the New Image button and create a compressed DMG of your master drive, saving it to another location like an external drive. When the DMG creation is complete, select the DMG from Disk Utility's sidebar and go the Images menu and choose Scan Image for Restore.
Once complete, you can use the Restore Tab of Disk Utility to clone the DMG to the other machines. Drag the captured DMG into the source field and then the drive you want to clone it to to the destination.
You will likely finish all 5 machines before Network Image Utility would capture the net restore image.

They are not taking up storage space. Apple knows you installed them at one time (="purchased", whether you paid money or not), and merely keeps a list so that if you wish to reinstall any of them on this or a future device, you can. This is useful if maybe you deleted them due to space constraints, and now have a device with more memory and wish to reinstall.
It's also useful for taking a trip down Memory Lane looking at all the useless apps you installed once then immediately deleted once you realized they were total garbage ...

• How do you permanently delete a file image in the catalogue

how do you permanently delete a file image in the ?

Highlight the image, press the delete key, in the dialog that appears click the button that says, "Delete from disk."
If you want to delete multiple images you can go through your images and when one is highlighted that you want to delete press the X key. That will mark the image for deletion. After you have gone through the images on Windows you can press Ctrl/backspace to display the same dialogue I described above. And you can choose to remove the marked images from the catalog or to delete them from your disk.

How can you permanently delete books from IBooks?

You cant permanently delete them, but you can hide them.
Pop into iTunes, and in the iTunes Store under Quick Links along the right hand side, you can see Purchases, and then sign in, look at your books and click on the X in the top left and it will hide them so you dont have to see them.
Hope this helps.

• How do you permanently delete trash in the deleted items folder?

I have over 4000 deleted emails in my deleted items folder. How do I permanently delete them from that folder? Thanks.

Hello,
If you are talking about the Deleted Items folder in an Outlook client, you probably should ask in the
Microsoft Office Community Forums.
Otherwise, I'd probably ask in the
Outlook.com forum on Microsoft Community.
In both cases, however, you should be able to right click the Deleted Items folder and select "Empty Folder"

• How do you permanently delete a TVshow from my itunes.

I downloaded a free preview of a TVShow watched it and then deleted it, now everytime I launch iTunes it starts downloaded that same show.
I have deleted it from the downloaded list and tried to delete it from the list of TVShow, while it appears to be deleted, everytime I launch iTune or synch my iPhone the show starts downloaded again, and it takes about 20 mins and slows down the synch process.
How can I permanently delete items from my iTunes and prevent them from continuous downloading?

I suspect one is the HD version and one is the standard version, both of which are often available to download again as a previous purchase from the iTunes store when you purchase a movie. They aren't stored in your personal iCloud account and therefore don't use any of your storage. The cloud symbols are just links to your previous purchases in the iTunes store. They can't be deleted but if you don't want to see one of them, you can hide it in iTunes on your computer and it shouldn't be visible on your iPad any longer (see iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases).

• TS1702 How do you permanently delete purchased apps from itunes?

How do I permanently delete purchased apps from itunes on my iphone?

I have spent a good part of my evening trying to figure this out then finally found this page which confirms what I was thinking... It doesn't appear possible! ARHHHH!!! There are loads of posts saying how you can do this, when what they appear to be describing is how to remove the apps from their iphone/ipad and not actually from the list of every app you have ever installed which appears when you go into the "Apps Store" > Updates > Not on this iPhone.
It would be really nice to be able to remove programs from this list as I am sure I am not the only person who over the years have installed some apps which where not very good and I don't want to be reminded of them or to ever see them again quite frankly.
I can do this very easily from my Android phone in Google Play which is Google's version of the App Store.
I think things like this remind me why I prefer the ease of use of my Android phone... Ho hum! Maybe one day some geeks at Apple will realise that this would actually be a really useful thing to be able to do and enable it.

• How do you permanently delete Photos from my iPhoto library?

When I delete a picture in iPhoto by hitting the "Delete" button on my keyboard, it vanishes from the Library but if I go into my hard-drive and look under my Photos folders, Ill find its still there. How do I delete it for good the first time?

Did you confirm that they were in the iPhoto trash bin before you emptied it via the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option? If you were in an album and hit the delete key you only removed the photo from that album. You have to be in an event for the Delete key to send the photo to the trash.
If done right the original image file, thumbnail and any modified versions will be completely deleted from the HD.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

What i did to combine an ablum was to change the album information so it is exactly the same as the one you want to merge it with. i did this and it worked. it has to be exactly the same, word for word. to edit the album information, right-click on the album and click "get info". a Box will appear. click on the 2nd tab to edit info. you can even change the album cover!
*note: this hasn't been tested for music downloaded from the iTunes Store.

• Hey Apple: How do you permanently delete iMessages (saved) ?!

PREAMBLE: THIS THREAD IS *NOT* FOR GENERIC "HOW DO I DELETE A TEXT" QUESTIONS; FOR THOSE OF US THAT ARE HAVING THE SPECIFIC (HUGE) ISSUE THAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE REFERRING TO AND IT *IS* A REAL ISSUE. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT WANT TO REPLY TO THIS THREAD, PLEASE DO NOT INSULT THOSE OF US WITH THIS ISSUE BY MAKING SOME GENERIC RESPONSE ABOUT SWIPING TO DELETE, OR HITTING "MORE" OPTION AND DELETING MULTIPLE TEXTS.
THIS THREAD IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTICED THAT EVEN IF *ALL* SMS & MMS MESSAGES APPEAR TO BE VISUALLY DELETED AND YOUR IMESSAGES APP ITSELF LOOKS "EMPTY", YET WHEN YOU GO TO SETTINGS>GENERAL>USAGE, YOU CAN SEE THAT, FOR EXAMPLE, ON MY IPHONE 5s RUNNING 7.0.2, IMESSAGES SAYS: "Messages (Saved) 1.0 GB" YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT, 1 GB FOR AN EMPTY FOLDER?? CLEARLY THERE ARE HIDDEN PHOTOS, VIDEOS, ETC. THAT WERE SENT THAT IMESSAGES IS NOT DELETING FROM THE PHONE; THIS SETTING IN "USAGE" APPEARS TO BE THE *ONLY* ONE THAT DOES NOT LET YOU "DELETE" THE DATA. IN ALL OTHER APPS, YOU CAN DELETE THE APP ITSELF OR (EVEN WHEN IT IS A BUILT IN APP) DELETE THE USER DATA FILES!
I WANTED TO CONSOLIDATE THREADS AND GET APPLE TO REALIZE THAT THIS IS A BIG ISSUE THAT NEEDS FIXING!

(again, even NON beta users like myself are having this issue, not just people like the ones who posted some of these threads)

(again, whoever posted this version may have been using a Beta of iOS7, but I am a "Regular" user who bought a new iPhone 5s and went through normal official install process and have iOS 7.0.2 on my phone (installed through normal iTunes sync/upgrade process) yet I, too, have this issue on my phone, as do apparently THOUSANDS of people!)

Striker wrote:
First, THANK YOU for taking the time to reply. The preamble was only meant to tell people who will insultingly give "beginner" answers that those of us that are having this issue are very smart folks and this is an "advanced" issue, not just a generic: "to delete a message, swipe it" inquiry.
That being said, I definitely agree with you that the messages are being cached/archived (without my permission, I might add) yet when the Messages app is empty there should be NO message data at all in the phone!
Out of frustration, I did a FULL factory restore just to see... yup, it is down to only 152 Kb(!) but when I restore from backup, it says "Messages (saved) 1.0 GB" !!
Yet the Messages app is still empty!
So, the fact that the iOS knows that there is data here, and heck, even adds the word "(Saved)" spelled exactly like that, means Apple KNOWS this situation may happen. So, Apple needs to please find a solution... all that needs to be done is add a User option to DELETE All Data. If it can SEE it, it should be able to DELETE it.
This is yet another reason why I sometimes hate "Finders" that do not allow you access to the data files themselves.
Firstly you DO NOT have to do a factory reset / wipe device, it is simply not required to get the space back!!
Mine had 3GB and I just got rid of it all, here is how:
METHOD ONE:
Make a backup in iTunes
open iBackupBot (Google it)
Go to the relevant backup
Click on Multimedia File Manager and click on the other Multimedia files tab
Sort by filename by clicking the Filename tab
Find MediaDomain/Library/SMS/Attachments and highlight all of them, then press delete. You can also click to export to a folder of your choice, if you want to save them that is.
Then go to System Files>MediaDomain>Library>SMS>Attachments
They will be all listed here, highlight them all and press delete
Then just restore that backup using iTunes!
Tadaa! Space recovered, your messages are still there but without the attachments! METHOD TWO:
Backup your device in iTunes and then to iCloud
Go to Settings>iCloud and toggle Documents & Data to OFF
Then do a 2nd backup to iTunes and iCloud
Then restore the device from iCloud and the message attachments should be gone, turn Documents & Data back on again in the settings
PLEASE NOTE: Method two is a much longer process but some users may feel more comfortable with this method.
P.S You may want to make two backups in case you get any of the above steps wrong, but it is simple to follow the above and not do anything wrong!
P.P.S You could also just go through every single conversation and delete the attachments one by one, but if you have hundreds or thousands of attachments, this will take a VERY LONG TIME!!!

• How do you permanently delete an app so it can't be re downloaded or backed up?

I recently broke up with my boyfriend of two years
who is still attached to my iTunes Account.
We both Downloaded an app called "My Utility's"
which is a secret file locked with a password,
He has photos of me in this file which are personal
That he is now threatening to put up over the Internet.
I was just wondering if there may be a way that I could
block or delete the app from my Apple ID or Account
so that the app could be deleted off all my Apple Devices
and he would be unable to get it back
if he were to try restore it to the Last backup ?

They are separate apps with separate passwords,
You can save websites, notes, pictures and videos
because we don't see each other at all I wouldn't even have the chance to go near his phone.
He's doesn't sync his phone with my lap top so I can't delete it and than sync his phone.
So I need a way to delete it through iCloud & my Apple ID so it deletes off his iPhone
Without me physically having his phone
And then ill have to do a new back up so he can't get it back
Even if I did see him his phone doesn't leave his hand I'm desperate to get this app off it
Even if I have to hack it (don't think that's possible) and as parthetc as it sounds
Any suggestion would help

• How do you permanently delete apps from iTunes 11.0.1?

I've seen a few community discussions about this however it seems to be discussing the former version of iTunes. I have version 11.0.1 and when I right click to delete as has been instructed previously I don't get a delete option. In fact, I don't get any sort of option.
So, I'm hoping to get some sort of insight to delete some of these apps from iTunes that were trials... or silly games I downloaded when I was bored and never plan to play again. It just gets old sorting through them all.
Thanks!

Hi HarmWong,
See if this helps. It is from the iTunes 11 for Windows Apple Support site:
Delete an item from your library
Click the item to select it, and press the Delete key.
Click Delete Item.
Do one of the following:
Remove the item only from your iTunes library: Click Keep File.
Delete the item from your computer: Click Move to Recycle Bin. The item is removed the next time you empty the Recycle Bin.
Removing an item from a playlist doesn’t remove it from your iTunes library or your computer. Deleting a playlist or folder doesn’t remove the songs from your library or hard disk.
When you delete a folder, all the playlists and folders inside that folder are also deleted.
If you can’t remove a song, make sure you didn’t select a song in a Smart Playlist with “Live updating” turned on.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
GB
