How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If anyone is kind enough to help, please explain in the most basic terms as I'm not that computer literate.

If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.

I've brought in a video file and an audio file, but can find no way to specify that they are a single source that should be compressed together. The documentation was of no use. How do you identify video and audio files as being one source?

Semantics, I suppose. In any case, you do need to go through Premiere Pro if you want AME to do the job. There are likely other encoders out there which can perform the muxing, though, if you'd rather not go through PP.

Hi all. I just downloaded Solaris 10 and installed it. I haven't used it for a long time (since version 8), and as I can see now, there are many improvements. I just loved Java Desktop! :)
Can someone please tell me what libs or codecs etc, do I have to download and install in order to play music and videos (mp3, wmv, dvd etc), and where I can find them?

DVDs are more of a problem because of DCIMA. Look around.

How do I play .mkv and .avi files?

When I updated the OS to Yosemite MPlayerX stopped working. VLC Player and Handbrake aren't available in the app store. Does anyone know of any free media players? Why can't QuickTime handle these additional file types?

I'd suggest installing 2 plugins for Quicktime: Perian and Flip4Mac. Perian can be downloaded here and Flip4Mac can be downloaded here. You could also try a different media player altogether. VLC is very popular and can play a wide range of different formats. Grab it here.

How do you restore a passport ilibrary file to a Mac iPhoto directory?

My objective was to move photos and movies to an external hard drive. I was successful in moving DVD projects. Now I have movies that it cannot find some the pictures and clips which are in iPhoto events. I probably messed up by moving iPhoto events to the HD which created the disconnect when I deleted them from the Mac library. In attempting to fix this I copied the iPhoto library to the HD and attempted to restore the library version from 11/6 which was before I started all the moving. When I copied the library file from passport to the mac hard drive it did not go into the iPhoto directory. iPhoto did not find it when I attempted to link to it but I was able to manually find and link to the mac hard drive library of 11/6. Plus iMovie still does not recognize the photos in projects so I'm as broke today as I was yesterday.
Before starting this I researched in the Apple Community including buying the iPhoto library manager app. Obviously I've missed something!!
(I'm running OSX 10.9.5, iPhoto 9.5.1 and iMovie 10.0.5)
1. Is there a way to restore the passport library to the Mac iPhoto directory? Or is this not necessary?
2. How can I relink the movies to their photos and clips in the iPhoto library? Or am I toast?

How exactly did you do this move?
The correct way (the only way actually) is to be sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
As to your specific questions
1 - that totally depends on knowing exactly what you did and how you moved the iPhoto library - if you followed the above instructions exactly then you can simply drag it bace as a single entity
2 - Again with no details no one knows - moving the library correctly using a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) changes nothing - if you made the poor choice of having a referenced library(The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended. then you can not relink with iPhoto (Aperture can) and you will have to move the library back to the main drive so the path to the referenced originals is the same as when they were imported

I have just purchased a new mac book air and want to transfer my itunes and photos form my old to new. Is there any easy way to do this as most of the tutorials seem to want to move everything and my old mac book is 512GB but my new air is 256GB solid state. I do not want to move everything ( except for itunes) but it seems to be difficult to select bits and pieces. The document that you are referencing shows screen shots under the Firewire/Thunderbolt section that shows how you can selectively migrate parts of the Macintosh HD. Skip down to that section and see if that is what you are looking for.
I don't see why you can't have the same library on both Macs, but I don't know if there is any way to keep them in sync, and you need to select one of them to sync your iTunes content with (this does not include Photos, as they are kept in the iPhone library. My husband and I sync our devices with the iTunes library on his Mac, but sync our photos with the iPhoto library on my Mac. You just have to make sure you have the device profile screens set up correctly for each device in each library).
Also, you can set up the User information as new on the new Mac
