How do you point to an external HD iTunes library?

My wife and I are using a 2012 iMac and we each have an account on the computer.  I have moved my iTunes library to an external HDD.  When I log into my wife's account, I am failing to point her iTunes to that same external HDD.  I have tried the "option" click iTunes and choose new folder, but I get an error saying there is no iTunes folder.  I guess it is looking for the .itl file and can't find it.  So how is it that I am able to access this, and she is not?  How can I fix it?

Yup. Right on. Color is doing nothing wrong, it's OS X that had you spoilt . Unlike Windows, Mac OS has no 'drives'. Everything is a file or a folder.
Anything you can a mount, a USB drive, a CD, a DVD, an external or an internal hard drive, will show up under /volumes. Exactly the way it works under *nix. Mac OS simply places an alias to those drives when you go into Finder. Which Color should really have recognized too, but Apple was in too much of a hurry to radically change FinalTouch's GUI. Oh well.

    How do you encrypt voice memos in the itunes library so no one else at your computer can listen to them?

    iTunes has no ability to encrypt anything. You'll need to search for encryption software appropriate for whatever type of computer you have. Or, you could set up separate accounts for other users of your computer and password your account.

    How do you remove a folder from an itunes library once it's been added?

    When you delete the song, a menu will come up and ask you if you want to trash or keep the file. Select "keep file."   It will no longer be in your song list but it will remain on your harddrive. To add it back in use the --"add to library"--  command in the  drop down "File" Menu (you have to navigagte to where the song is stored on your hard drive and select it-- to add it back in.
    Re: it ended up in the wrong album
    If your songs are going in the wrong place go to the "Get Info" command and check the information under all the tabs (look at a song that's in the right album to see how it's listed) -- one or more of the boxes is incorrect or empty.  Just put  in the right information and close the info window. That should put it back in the right spot for you.

    I have recently purchased an apple mac and am trying to transfer my songs (which I previously uploaded from CD's) to the itunes library but with no success.  does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks

    Some of the information below is summarized by turingtest2 in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18842615
    Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
    iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
    For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do you point iPhoto to an existing iPhoto library?

    I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything. iPhoto now sees the library on the internal drive, but the library I've been using the last years (big!) is on an external I use. Is there a process for pointing it to that file? I've searched and googled but haven't found an answer. thanks!

  • How do you transfer music from a different itunes library to my iPhone? (4s)

  • How do you import songs into a new iTunes library from a Touch?

    I downloaded iTunes on a new PC laptop but, I'm unable to import the songs that are on the Touch, to the new iTunes library.
    The songs that are on the Touch are all iTunes purchased songs and these songs are based in a iTunes library that is on the old laptop that no longer works. iTunes on the old laptop cannot be accessed and there was no cd-dvd back up done for this library.
    When the Touch is connected to iTunes on the new laptop, the songs on the Touch do appear in a music folder under the device heading which is fine but, because these songs can't be imported into the new library, they cannot be backed up as far as I know.
    Otherwise, everything regarding iTunes is working as it should be on the new laptop.
    Since I'm dealing only with iTunes purchased songs, iTunes, and a Apple device, there must be some way of adding the songs from the Touch into the new library.
    I've done a Google search about this and any of the suggestions I've tried, haven't worked.
    The OS on the new laptop, is Windows 7.
    If someone can offer some help on this, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Your suggestions worked.
    Had to do the authorize step first and then I was able to re-download the songs into the new library.
    Thanks

  • How do you point

    how do you point to a specific frame when calling in an
    external swf file?
    This is what I"m using to pull the external swf file in....
    _root.createEmptyMovieClip("container",1);
    container.loadMovie ("_MoviePlayer.swf");
    I'd like it to go directly to frame 3, how can I do that?
    Thanks

    I'm still having a lot of trouble with this. I've tried a
    variety of things none of which have worked at all.
    This is what I have used so far:
    (1)
    on (release){
    createEmptyMovieClip("container",1);
    container.loadMovie ("_MoviePlayer.swf");
    _root.container.gotoAndStop ("Ghost");
    *Still plays the first frame, not the 3rd (which is labeled
    "Ghost")
    (2)
    on(release){
    _root.whereToGo="gallery";
    container.loadMovie("_MoviePlayer.swf");
    *and I put this in the external swf:
    gotoAndPlay(_root.whereToGo);
    *Nothing comes up at all on this one.
    (3)
    on (release) {
    loadMovieNum ("_MoviePlayer.swf", 1);
    _level1.gotoAndPlay("Ghost");
    *This one works, but does not go to the correct frame, it
    plays the first frame.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

    how do you back up an external hard drive with time capsule?

    Will time capsule back up the machine and the hard drive that is plugged into the machine?
    Yes, if the hard drive with the video files is formatted correctly for Mac
    On the Mac with the hard drive connected....click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the screen
    Click Time Machine Preferences
    Click Options
    Here you will see a list of items that have been excluded from backups
    Click the name of the hard drive to highlight it
    Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of excluded items
    The hard drive will now be backed up with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes

  • HT1229 How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what.

    How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what. When you have several thousand photos it is difficult to determined what is what.
    Why does iPhoto have the ability to put photos in events and to give them descriptions if it doesn't transfer this info with the photo. I want to back my photos up to an external drive.

    The simplest way to achieve what you want is to back up the iPhoto Library. That will get everything.
    You sem to be exporting from iPhoto to the Finder. The Finder does not have the same organisation capabilities as iPhoto. If you're going to do that you need to understand some of the differences between the two.
    Event Name will become  Folder Name.
    'Description Name' I guess is the Title you give the Photo
    Jpeg Number is the File Name assigned by your camera.
    So: File -> Export
    Set your Kind to Jpeg
    Select your preferred Quality
    Check the Boxes at 'Titles and Descriptions' and Location Information
    Under FIlename select 'Use Title'
    Click on Export. In the Next Window choose a New Folder as your export destination and then Name that as you prefer
