How do you recover overwritten files?

my husband accidentally replaced an existing folder (all my photos)with the external hard drive back up. is there any way that i can get the original folder?

That's sounds like a horrible mishap. Your answer leads me to believe that yuo don't have some other backup. What about Time Machine? When it is set up in the default way, it backs up everything every hour, copying everything that changed in the last hour to an existing backup. Please tell me you have Time Machine!
The problem is that there is something called a "file catalog" that explains to your computer how to retrieve files from the disk. It connects all the photo files (many individual files, no doubt) to that (now overwritten) folder. Computers don't write files to the disk in just one place: a given photo file may be written in little bits and pieces all over the disk. The "catalog" also explains to your computer how to find all those bits and pieces when you ask it to get one single photo and display it on your screen. [I have never fully understood why this is how files are stored ...] So when the folder was obliterated, all your photos are actually still physically on your disk in many different pieces and places, but the information is gone that enables your computer to know where to get all the pieces and assemble them into a photo.
If there are still chunks of photo files that are intact, there are programs (one that comes to mind is called Data Rescue -- these programs cost $100 or so) that try to scour through the disk and copy all such files it can find, even though the catalog has been overwritten by your husband's mistake. Various 'rescue" companies will charge hundreds or thousands of dollars to physically scour over a disk to copy all the bits it can. People usually use them when a disk has crashed and cannot be mounted anymmore, but the platters are still there.
It is possible someone smarter than me will chime in here with some alternative suggestion. I am truly sorry that you have had this terrible mishap. Yuor husband owes you some sort of very nice valentine's present to make up for this (maybe an expensive sports car?). Your loss of photos hit home with me because my daughter is a budding photographer with about 150 GB of digital photos and because she would be devastated losing any of them, I make her use Time Machine and whenever she comes home from college I make copies of all her photos on various external hard drives. We have thousands of other photos and I have them copied to multiple external drives and multiple computers as well (in iphoto libraries).
Did you use iphoto for your photos? If so, you might stop using your computer (to avoid further overwriting anything) and see if Data rescue or something similar can find the iphoto library file/folder that contains the photos and try to 'rescue" it.

Hi i have a file i can't open that is really important! How can i recover this file? using the latest adobe indesign!!!

Send me a link to the file, or a request for an upload link to my dropbox, by the private message system (click my avatar, then choose message). I'll see if the Windows tools will work (no promises).
The only other thing I know to try is Markzware.com (Bad InDesign or Quark File Recovery Submission Form), but it is not free.

Sorry, there is no file recovery for files you delete from cloud storage. If you made a local backup then you can restore from it.

  • How do you recover files that were put in the trash before you emptied your trash?

Before realizing that I had saved my research paper under downloads rather than documents, I put all my downloaded files in the trash and emptied my trash. How can I recover this file? I appreciate all the help I can get! I have spent the last five hours editing this paper :/

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the file is recovered or you choose not to recover it.

You can recover to an iCloud or iTunes backup that contains the note. With no backup you are out of luck.

I downloaded an Adobe file from my email (service provider is MWeb) but now cannot find it on my hard drive and it's not in the recycle bin. It does, however, appear in Firefox downloads but I'm unable to open it from there. How can I recover the file?

    Thanks Rob.
I actually had no clue what the core problem was caused by. So it's Windows itself...that helps some.
I'll resubmit there. It might actually have saved time for it to simply have been moved to there instead of off-topic, though I suppose you have to follow protocol.

  • How do I recover lost files off my external WD Passport hard drive with Time Machine?

I have been backing up my Macbook Pro with Time Machine and my Western Digital Passport since May 2010. I accidentally deleted my music in February of 2011, but had backed it up with Time Machine. Now when I try to go back and recover the files in Time Machine, they are gone. Nothing is available past June 2011. How do I recover those files?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

If you have an iTunes backup or iCloud backup containing that note you can restore from that backup.
If you have no backups the note is gone.

  • My 80 GB classic won't read the files I have synced up to it over the past 4 years, but it still shows that the files are still in there somewhere. How can I recover those files?

I manually manage my music on my iTunes library. Once I have it downloaded on my laptop, then click and drag it to my iPod, I delete the files from my computer to save memory space. So I basically don't have ANY back-ups to over half of the music that was on my iPod. The other week I did what I usually do to add music to my iPod, but once I disconnected it fro  my computer, my iPod said there was no music, movies, or anything on there. If you highlight over the Settings it reads that there are still 60 GB of space free out of 80 GB. How can I recover those files that are clearly still on my disk without erasing everything I installed into it?

In my Computer, click the  iPod icon ->Properties->Tools->Error Checking
    Click Check Now.
If it doesn't help, you have to use 3rd Party apps to recover these lost files, as the iPod filesystem got corrupted.

  • Truecrypt volume is empty, but the volume was never deleted. How do I recover the files (I know the password to the Truecrypt volume)?

Earlier when I went to access my truecrypt password encrypted volume, it showed that it was empty, and it contained 0 files. I never deleted the files and I am the only person with the password.
I suspect it may be because (1) I tried making a password protected folder on disk utility or (2) tried to setup time machine and didn't quite work.
My question is: is it possible to recover the files, if so, how can I recover the files. I've tried manually powering the computer off, restarting the computer, reinstalling truecrpt.
Please help, I have many treasured pictures on the volume.

    Hi,
DPM do not care about the Source File has changed or deleted, so SCDPM does not know if a File has been changed or is deleted.
So there is now known way to archive your Goal.
I can imaging that you can archive this Goal with a Powershelgl Script, but would be not this easy

How do I recover a file of images I removed from LR 4.3 that is not found in my desktop recycle bin?

I would try the following, in order
Have your operating system search your entire hard disk(s)
If that doesn't find the files, restore from backup
If you don't have backups then perhaps you should consider making backups of both your catalog file and your photos from now on
Locate, download and install and run an "undelete utility" (freeware versions are available) -- if you are going to do this, do it immediately, do not perform other tasks on your comptuer

You won't find it via a normal search in Finder.
But in Finder you can try holding down the option key and in the menu Go > Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers and look for an 'Untitled.numbers' document there.

Do you have an iTunes backup?
Do you have an iCloud backup?
If the answer to both questions is 'no', then you cannot restore the data to your device, other than maually re-entering everything.

  • How do you recover a deleted calendar? ooops

I Accidentally deleted a calendar on my list of calendars. How can I get it back? I searched the trash for the date it happened but nothing appeared for that day. I am hoping it is not permanently lost. Anyone else done this? How did you recover the lost data? I wish I could reboot my computer using the date from the day before it happened.

    Joe,
If you make the backup using iCal>File>Back up iCal..., you will have a file named something like iCal 2008-12-30.icbu.
Using iCal>File>Restore iCal..., navigate to the file, and follow the prompts to restore from your iCal backup file as it existed when the backup was made. In the example I gave, which was my last backup, iCal would revert to the state that existed on Dec 30th, and any entries made since that date would not be preserved.
If you made the backup using Time Machine, restore the Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library "Calendars" Folder from your most current Time Machine backup.
