How do you restore a phone when it is in recovery mode?

Tried updating my phone to 7.1.1 and it is now giving me what I think is the screen of death. I have the iTunes logo and it telling me to plug it in. Plugged it into my computer and iTunes is telling me it detects a phone in recovery mode and that it needs to be restored before doing anything else. Help!!

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

Take your time... Pay particular attention to Steps 3 and 4.
To minimise loss... After you have Recovered your Device...

If you are in recovery mode, it is already gone. If you have a recent backup, you can reload it after you restore your phone.

You will need to get access to some computer running iTunes to restore the iPhone. There is no way to restore the iPhone otherwise, with or without a restrictions password. To remove the restrictions passcode, restore the iPhone to factory settings, which will delete all your data and documents. You can then sync back or re-download your apps, music, movies, etc.

What iPhone do you have? And what version of iTunes do you have? Either on a Mac go to the iTunes menu and "About" or Windows go to Help then About. You'll need to have the latest version which is 11.0.1.

Apple has many ways to protect & archive your photos. PhotoStream (up to 1000 pictures [more, actually], for up to 30 days). It's free storage. And you did not use it.
Or, like any most other imaging devices, you could have connected the iPhone to your computer and copied your images to your computer.
You could have sent the images to your email address form your phone.
I'm sorry to hear that you lost your photos. But as far as ways to recover deleted data? No supported way that I'm aware of. You may have to search elsewhere for third-party options, but caveat emptor.
