  • How do I restore individual programs (such as iTunes) from time machine?

I recently put two hard drives in my macbook. I put a 60gig solid state in the original hard drive bay and put my original 500gig in the optical drive bay. The computer works well with the OS being on the solid state but I want to make all of my media save onto the 500gig while keeping the actual iTunes program on the solid state. I plan to do this with iPhoto as well, any advice?

And use Kappys solution in this threadhttps://discussions.apple.com/message/12075660#12075660 to move your home folder completely to the HDD and with it all your pictures, music, documents, etc.

  • How do I restore a failed external hard drive using Time Machine?

I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac that is being backed up with Time Machine.  I just realized that should it one day fail and no longer appear as a connected device, I'm not sure how to restore its data to another external drive.  When I disconnected the external hard drive (to mimic a drive crash) and entered Time Machine to see if I could verify that the external hard drive was, in fact, being backed up - I didn't know where to find it.  Under the Today (Now) information, I didn't expect to see it there as it was no longer connected to the machine.  But when I went back a few days, I expected to see its backup appear in the Sidebar.  But no!
So - how do I restore a failed external hard drive using Time Machine?
Searches for this information on Google yielded "iffy" results.  I'm hoping someone here is able to offer some clear steps to follow.  Perhaps I'm missing something silly.  Thank you very much!

I came across this discussion after encountering the same problem. Since my internal HD was cose to full I added an additional external HD to my setup. I moved my iPhoto files to an external HD and backed both this external HD and my internal HD up with Time Machine to another external HD. So far the theory. When I wanted to test if this setup worked I noticed that I could only see my iPhoto libraries on the external HD in Time Machine when the external HD was connected to my computer, but not if I turned it off. This led me to search for a solution on the Apple Support Communities discussion board.
The suggestions made Kappy seem right, at least in my experience, in that my Time Machine simply did not back up the external HD until I followed the steps he suggested above. These were the following:
"So, if you want it backed up then here's what you need to do:
    1. In Time Machine preferences remove the external drive from the Exclude list.
    2. Verify that it is now included with your other drive in the backup list.
    3. Do a Backup Now to create a new backup of the external drive."
After doing this, my external HD showed up in the Backups.backupd as a seperate folder. I could clearly see the Time Machine back-up for my internal HD and my external HD. In addition, in Time Machine itself I was able to find the external harddrive by clicking on my own computers name under "Devices". I hope my experience helps to resolve your issue as this discussion board has helped me resolve mine (which I believe to be very similar).
    Cheers!

  • Restoring an application - iWork, for example, from Time Machine

Forgive me if this has been asked/answered, but I didn't find it in the FAQs. Is it possible to restore all of my iWork apps from Time Machine directly to my new hard drive's Applications folder?

#17 in this user tip may be useful: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html.

  • Cannot restore an old version of photo library from time machine

I save my photos to an external drive and back up to another drive using time machine.  My photo drive has become corrupted (hard disc failing).  I have gone into Timemachine and chosen an earlier photo library backup version (some months ago) and a new replacement external drive for the photo library, but when I then restore to this new drive, Time Machine advances to the most recent backup (with missing photos), and not my chosen backup, and saves this to the new drive.  iphoto8, 7.1.5  & snow leopard, 10.6.8.

How did you try to restore from Time machine?  Like described in this document? This should work, if your Time Machine backups are complete:
iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later) - Apple Support
Earlier Time Machine versions had a glitch and could not make a full backup of an iPhoto Library, if iPhoto was open during backup.
I am not sure about your iPhoto version, but previous iPhoto versions could browse a Time Machine backup directly from iPhoto. Look for a "Browse Backup" backup item in iPhotos Help. Use this to restore the missing photos.

  • How can you configure a WD external to work with Time Machine??

I have an 1TB external WD MyBook drive that is connected to my network through my Linksys wireless router and am trying to figure out how to format the drive to use with Time Machine.
I currently use the drive to store files from both my PC and my MacBook but can't seem to select the drive to use with Time Machine. I figured that I could just format the drive through the Disk Utility program, but the drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility. This may be because it is a drive connected through my router and not directly to my MacBook?!
    Here are a few questions...
Any ideas on how to format the drive so it will work with Time Machine?
Once formatted to use with TM, can I still use the drive to store other files from both my Mac and PC? or do I need to partition for this??
Is it possible to set up an automatic backup schedule that will happen via my home wireless connection?
    Thanks in advance,
    Todd.

You cannot use the drive with TM as you have it set up. TM will not work with a networked drive except a Time Capsule or a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (current version.)
If you wish to use this drive for TM backups it must be connected directly to the computer. Other computers on the network can access the drive for TM backups if you turn on file sharing for the drive (select drive, press COMMAND-I, check the box labeled "Shared Folder," click on the Enable button.) The shared drive will have to be mounted on the other computers in order for them to use it as a TM backup drive.

  • How can I fix repetitive 'fontd' crashes after recovery from time machine backup?

After recovery from time machine backup (Disk Utility told me to reformat my internal hard drive) i got annoying repetitive prompts from crashing 'fontd'. How can I fix it? Anyone suffering from the same disease?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • Restore to unformatted internal hard drive from Time Machine

I want to put a new hard drive in my Macbook Pro running 10.7 and restore my backup from Time Machine.  I do not have any copies of 10.7 because it came installed on my Macbook Pro.  I also do not have an external hard drive or enclosure to do any cloning procedures.  Since there will be no OSX installed on this unformatted hard drive ….how can I get this drive formatted and restore my backup from Time Machine?  Please tell me there is a way.

    Anyone on this question?

  • Restoration of /var/log/secure.log from Time Machine Backup

I have a need to restore /var/log/secure.log from Time Machine Backup on Lion Server, but can not find any entries for this file in the Time Machine archives even when using the find command.   It seems like it is not backed up.   I'm hoping that this is not the case; if it is it represents a pretty large mistake from a security perspective.
Is there something that I'm missing?
    Thanks

Try time machine and see what happens...  I dare ya!
I've helped several folks here who were using TM on Snow Leopard Server quite successfully.  In most cases, as in most cases of trouble with backups on client Macs, they were having hardware problems.
Granted this is a 10.6 server page, but they haven't updated open LDAP in a way that would change it's database functionality, nor have they changed the way time machine backs up and what it backs up.
Nowhere there does Apple say that "Time Machine is NOT a suitable backup solution for a server" or anything like that.
The article clarifies what it does, and does not, back up.   So it may or may not be a suitable backup solution depending on individual situations.

  • In Time Capsule, How do you restore safari?

One of my bookmark links is corrupted.  When I go to this website, it closes all of my open Safari pages.  I am trying to restore the original Safari "Popuar" bookmark folder.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi, again.
I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing trouble. There are a few steps that you can use to hopefully get things working. It's best to try them one at a time, but if you're in the mood for a flamethrower approach, feel free to go all the way throught the first go:
After opening Safari, click the Safari menu and select "Reset Safari...". From the dialogue box that opens up, select all items and then Reset. (Note: You'll lose your cached passwords and form data, so you'll want to be sure that you have all this information available for your next logon to various websites.)
If that doesn't solve the problem, use the same technique detailed earlier to enter the "~/Library/Safari" folder and delete all the files EXCEPT the Bookmarks.plist. Then move to "~/Library/Preferences" and delete com.apple.Safari.plist, com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist, and com.apple.internetconfig.plist. Don't worry if any of those files are missing, just delete the ones that are there.
That should restore Safari, with the exception of your bookmarks, to the barebones factory defaults. If the problem STILL exists at that point, then somehow something would appear to still be wrong with the Bookmarks.plist. If so, I'd suggest opening up Disk Utility and fixing permissions on the boot drive, then rebooting and holding Cmd-S at the startup tone. This will boot the system to single-user mode, at which point you should enter "fsck -fy" at the command prompt when boot has finished. This will check the integrity of the disk itself and fix any file system anomalies it finds beyond what fixing permissions did earlier.
With any luck at all, this will get you back in the running.

  • How to restore a failed external hard drive from Time Machine?

My external hard drive has failed. It will no longer spin up and therefore is unmountable. Thankfully I had added it to my OSX Time Machine backups. So, since disks are cheap, I can just go buy a new, probably larger external drive and restore, right? But how do I tell Time Machine that this is a replacement and to restore to the new drive?
PS - Yes I did remove the external drive from TM's exclude list and have verified that the backup is there on TM's own external drive.

give the new drive the same name as the old one. then you can restore anything on its backups using regular TM interface. if you want to restore the whole drive , just select the whole drive in the sidebar, scroll back in time to when the odl time was backed up and hit 'restore".
PS - Yes I did remove the external drive from TM's exclude list and have verified that the backup is there on TM's own external drive.

  • How to restore Mac OS 10.7.3 from time machine?

Hello I would like to restore my OS to 10.7.2 after the upgrade to 10.7.3.
I have time machine, and backups before and after the fatal update.
But I worked between and created files so I do not want to completely restore my system but only the OS / system part.
    Is it possible ?
How does it work with Time Machine ?
Thank you for your kind help

    Hello John,
    Work done !
it hasn't been as easy as hoped, but it finally worked.
--> install Leopard OS from DVD
--> download and install lion from App Store (already in 10.7.3)
    --> copy of my data
    what a relief, I haven't lost anything.
I didn't understand at first how time machine worked, so it created another user on my new OS.
I wanted to suppess the user, and it took ages, sooo long so I had to shut the computer by holding the power butter 5 secs.
Clean reboot, everything seems OK. I tried to check permissions and there are files with wrong permissions. Just a bunch, but auto repair do not work.
Someone have an idea to repair this ?
The OS is working fine anyway.
    RESULT :
the Wi-Fi is back, and behaves normaly. The computer goes to sleep, wakes, then the WiFi is automatically back.
Well I should try it for a couple of days.
Moreover, the system seems more responsive and faster than before. It was already good, now it is excellent.

  • Is it possible to restore all versions of a file through time machine?

    Hi,
I am wondering if it is possible to restore all versions of a particular file stored on time machine, either through the standard time machine interface, or through an applescript?  Ideally versions of the file would be saved to a folder with dates attached to the filenames to distinguish them.
