How do you retain the quality of Canon HD DSLR files?

     There is a noticeable loss of contrast (and color) when Canon 1D DSLR 1280x720 60fps files are loaded into Premiere Pro CS6, (by me).  Many different project settings give this same result.  Whether New Sequence - Project settings are Canon XF MPEG2, Digital SLR, AVCHD, or XD CAM HD422, I get nearly the same, (or identical) results.  Changing New Sequence>Settings to enable Maximum Bit Depth and Maximum Rendering Quality, made no difference for me.
(NOTE - Edit>Preferences>Memory>Optimize Rendering for 'memory' was selected and the program restarted, before enabling Maximum Rendering Quality).
     Comparing source files played in Windows Media Player, VLC player, and Canon Zoom Browser, all showed higher contrast than in Premiere Pro: toggling between the different windows.  Comparing identical frame screen captures from Premiere Pro CS6 (bitmap) and Canon Zoom Browser (jpeg-highest quality) showed the same results.  At full zoom in Photoshop CS4, certain pixels showed near posterization in the Premiere screen shot.  It seemed that gray tones of medium brightness were affected most.
     The Canon 1d DSLR stores files as a .MOV type, but I don't think Premiere considers this when loading source files.  I don't own the Quicktime program.
     I don't have a CUDA graphics card, but I thought that this card was not supposed to affect file coding or de-coding, according to the Video2Brain hardware optimization tutorials.  Although it might have been that read and write TIMES were unaffected.  These tutorials covered a LOT of (good) material.  My notes say that CUDA cards most affect scaling, blending, 'effects' operations, color corrections, and framing.  Also, by setting New Sequence>Settings> to optimize rendering, I think I should have got  results similar to a CUDA card.
     For me, the loss of contrast (and color) is a significant loss of image quality.  You get the same results from a dirty lens, or shooting through an unfocused obstacle.  I would appreciate any help in this matter.

     Thanks John T. Smith, using the Video2Brain tutorial method got me a sequence format of AVC-Intra 100 720 60p, which is one I had not tried before.  I believe this format will give me the highest quality video for Canon 1D M4 1280x720 files.
     What I see as far as contrast is very close to what I saw before.  Whether the contrast I see is good or bad depends both on personal opinion and monitor charactoristics; mainly the type of monitor and how the monitor is calibrated.  Yes I still see lower contrast in the Premiere video, compared to how its displayed in VLC, Windows Media Player and Canon Zoom Browser.  Based on my Photoshop experience the Premiere video seems to be going through some kind of low-pass filter.  Yes the contrast is less, but the noise is less as well.  How would the Premiere video look after adjustment layers, or Shadow highlight combined with resharpening I cannot say.   It might look good to me and bad to someone else or vise versa.  What I can say for certain in my mind, is that the Premiere video seems to go through some kind of low pass filtering compared to little or no low pass filtering for what you see in the other 3 programs.  And based on my personal habits, I would probably be tempted at this point to adjust that low pass filter in some way.  However, it seems that standard practice would be to apply adjustment layers, etc as I mentioned before.  I'll reserve my opinion for now.

  • How do you change the quality of imported PDFs?

    I have been creating fillable forms in LiveCycle ES2, using my companies existing PDFs, importing them as fixed images, and adding form elements on top. When I have been looking back at what LiveCycle is producing in terms of quality, versus the PDFs I initially import in Acrobat, the quality is substantially worse in LiveCycle, and any PDFs that I import into and save from LiveCycle look to be a much lower quality. The images of our forms I am importing into Acrobat are 250dpi, 8.5x11. They look crisp and clean in Acrobat. When they are imported, the text looks more grainy when zoomed in, and the logos have jagged edges. I read that LiveCycle, by default, imports PDFs as a medium quality JPG. First, is there any way around this? I can't find an option anywhere to change the quality. If not, is there a workaround that would allow me to accomplish my goals?
    I created a new, blank form in LiveCycle, added an image, and set it as the image of my PDF form. The quality is significantly better, however, the hierarchy is substantially different than when importing a fixed PDF, and I will lose my OCR recognized text from my original PDF.

    Kyle,
    Thanks for your response. To be clear, the way I am importing the PDF is by going to New in LiveCycle, and selecting Import a PDF document, and selecting Create and Interactive Form with Fixed Pages.
    I cannot change the forms or pages, as they are created by our local Board. In otherwords, I have tryed used the flowable content, and upon import, not only are the fonts slightly different, but all the important artwork (trade-related) is gone, and is not in the exact positions it was in. The forms must meet the standards to which they were approved by the regional board, and there are state-mandated forms as well.
    What surprises me is that you say this method of Fixed Content isn't used much any more. I would think that a lot of people would have PDF files they would wish to make into fillable, interactive forms without needing to reconstruct the entire document. Perhaps a company that has always done things on paper, and now wishes to use those exact same forms on the computer, with no deviations to looks so they can be printed and match up perfectly.
    I thought about using Acrobat's internal form creation system. However, some of these forms have sophisticated options and the calculation scripts and systems within LiveCycle are very useful. Not to mention that it has a much larger scalability, should we chose to utilize it.
    Any other suggestions? I am so confused why Adobe would force medium-quality import of a PDF, but be so incredibly flexible about every other option in their program.

  • How do you find the number of lines in a file?

    I need to count how many lines there are in a file, I am using a BufferedReader to read in the data, but how can I find the number of lines?

    That depends. How do you define a line? Is it a specific number of
    characters, a String that's terminated by a newline character or some
    combination thereof?

  • How do you vary the Date/Time stamp format in File Adapters

    In the receiver channel of the File Adapter where you specify the 'File Name Scheme', you do have the option of specifying a 'File Construction Mode' of 'Add Time Stamp'.  How can you specify a different Date/Time stamp format ( eg MM/DD/YY vs YYYYMMDD vs MMDDYY, etc. ) without changing the Date/Time stamp for the entire SAP system?  Also, can you control where the Date/Time stamp appears in the filename?

    Hi,
    There are many threads discussing the same issue. Go thro the following:
    Dynamic file name (Date) in Receiver File Adapter
    Receiver File Adapter - TimeStamp
    Bhavesh's reply in above thread:
    You can use Adapter Specific Identifiers and then change the file name in the mapping. Append the tiem stamp in the format that you want and so on.
    Just use this code in an UDF,
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container.getTransformationParameters().get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","FileName");
    String SourceFileName = conf.get(key);
    java.text.SimpleDateFormat dateformat = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat( "yyyyMMdd" );
    dateformat.format( new java.util.Date() );
    String newfilename=SourceFileName+dateformat;
    // change to new file name
    conf.put(key, newfilename);
    return "";

  • How do you get the root folder to recognize updated file in nested folder?

    I believe in OS 9, a modified file nested in a folder would trigger the root folder to recognize and update to the top of the "date modified" column. As long as I've used the Mac (20 years) I've used the "date modified" to force my current client folders to the top of the column. Lately, I have many nested folders in the root client folder. When I make changes to a file in a nested folder, OS X doesn't make the root folder recognize changes within a nested folder. I realize there is not likely to be a fix for this in OS X, as Apple probably deems this behavior to be proper (I do not,) so my question would be expanded to include suggestions for third party software that may accomplish this.

    Sorry, posted that last post and ran out of time while editing it. It should read like this:
    "Yes, if you ADD a new item or folder to a folder, it updates the root folder, but if you simply MODIFY a file (like Photoshop) within a subfolder, the root folder WILL NOT update the date modified. Check it out."
    Actually, whether the directory that a file is re-saved in will be modified or not can depend on the application in question and how it saves files.
    Let's say a folder has a single file in it. The modification date of the folder will be the last time a change was made to the directory, either by adding or removing an item from it. (This can include the invisible .DS_Store file in which the Finder saves view settings for a folder, which can often be written without you're realizing it unless you have the Finder show all files like I do).
    Then, let's say you open that file, which is a stream of bytes, in an application. You make some changes which alters the representation of the stream of bytes in RAM. The application then saves the changes to the file by filling it with the stream bytes as they now are in RAM. Modifying the contents of a file in this manner does not alter the directory that it's in. The modified date of the folder should remain unchanged.
    Some applications use a different method than above to save files, however. Let's say that theoretically while the application is re-writing to the original file during a save, the power goes out and your computer shuts down. There's a good chance that the document that was being saved is now corrupt. A safer method that some applications use, is to first write out the information to a new file in the same directory as the original file, then delete the original file, and then rename the new file so that it has the same attributes as the old file. This method will, of course, modify the directory that the original file was in by adding and removing a file.

  • How do you change the resolution size of a mp4 file?

    I am looking for a free (really free, not just a trial for 30 days free) program that will allow me to change the resolution of a mp4 video.
    If this is a "parameter" setting issue in DW what would be the parameter and the value?
    The video is here: http://www.argraph.com/Sirui-P-Series-Monopods.html#psSeries.............a little past midway down the page.
    As you see the words SIRUI and the tag line cannot be seen in their entirety.
    THIS is the way it should look.....
    The second image represents a youtube link but my boss said he cannot see it on his laptop or tablet
    and insists that I use mp4 because it works with all formats; iphone, android, pc and mac.
    I tried doubling the size of the file and it worked but was SOoooooo big that it blew the page out so I suspect that I
    have to resize the file.
    Ken? Nancy? ANYBODY?????   Seriously as always any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    1. As far as HTML5 support, if they have a browser made within the last few years (I think since about 2009), it supports html5. The page I linked to gives the versions where all of the major browsers started supporting the <video> tag.
    2. The "your browser does not support..." text is what appears on screen when a viewer uses a browser that doesn't support HTML5 (like IE8).
    If you still plan to support the old non-html5 browsers, the best thing to do is to place a fallback video using the old <object><embed> method in that "your browser does not support" location. That way, if they don't have an html5 compatible browser, the fallback video will play using whatever plug-in they have installed to deal with it. It would look like this...
    <video width="320" height="240" controls>
    <source src="movie.mp4" type="video/mp4" />
    <source src="movie.ogg" type="video/ogg" />
    <object width="320" height="240">
    <param name="movie" value="myvideo.swf" />
    <embed src="movie.swf" width="320" height="240"></embed>
    </object>

  • How can you access the content behind an Animate .oam file in Muse?

    I have an animation to open doors at the bottom of a parallax scroll, but once the doors open, I cannot click on any of the buttons in my "room" that were set up in Muse. Anyone have any ideas of how to fix this? I am using CC for both programs.

    More »

    Hello,
    In case .oam file is placed above the content, then I am afraid user would not be able to click on the content which is behind the animation.
    There are two workarounds that you have. Either have the content (Buttons behind the open door) placed inside the Animation itself so that users can click on it.
    Or you can have transparent Rectangles (boxes) placed in front of the animation and apply links to them. it should appear like the buttons behind the animation are clickable however it should be these transparent Boxes which would be clickable and are placed above the Buttons and the animation (on the top layer).
    Hope this helps.

  • How do you disable the menu asking to confirm putting file to remote?

    I am utterly perplexed by this function.
    When I have check files in /out DISABLED I get this menu asking me to confirm that I want to put a file on the remote because someone else has the file "checked out"
    When I have file check in and out ABLED I get this same !@#E@!~ message.
    I am the ONLY one servicing this website. so why !@$@# am i getting this message telling me that the remote file has changed and that I need to confirm putting the file there.  whats the deal?
    i get asked this if i have check in/out DISABLED and if I have this function ENABLED.
    what can i do to GET RID OF THIS MENU request?  its SOOOOOOOOOOO irritating!
    help! thanks!

    Actually it does not matter whether check in/out is ENabled or DISabled. the same pain in the *** menu problem happens.
    this is the menu i get when it is DISabled
    “X is currently working on www/program/pr_index.php (Please enable Check In/Out in the Site Definition dialog box to avoid overwriting changes made by other users.) Do you want to upload the file anyway?”
    It then gives option:
    Yes, yes to all. No. no to all. Cancel.
    If I click yes to all. It will put it to the remote. Then I can immediately try to put the same file once again to remote and I will then again have to go through this SAME ROUTINE.
    Thus in other words, even with check in/out DISabled I get this message about using check in and check out that is just ridiculous.  Especially because I am the only person EVER editing the website. So how can this seriously possible?
    Thanks for your thoughts on this.

  • How do you make the smallest pdf from InDesign CS4 but retain some sharpness?

    I have a 2 page brochure, front and back with layered photoshop files and when I make the small pdf I need to make a 100kb file like a client has done in the past. The smallest I can make the pdf file is 460kb.  It will not go smaller no matter what I do. Of course I can enter final resolution as 72 dpi but the photos become very fuzzy. I have even reduced the file sizes of the photos and replaced them in the document. The file size remains the same.  My client said that Illustrator reduced the size for him smaller in the past but I don't think that is the solution.  How do you retain some sharpness in a pdf but keep the file size at a very minimum?

    But InDesign CS4 outputs the file no matter what at 460 kb for me.
    Still don't know why they got 100 kb.
    By not using InDesign. Scott is on the right track by mentioning Distiller - which makes PDFs that are smaller than what InDesign can export. Illustrator can be used (improperly*) in the same way. Both methods can strip out stuff that you don't need if you don't care about printing quality, don't care about reliable display across multiple platforms, don't care about precisely how your fonts are embedded, don't care about the lawsuit that the blind people using screenreaders are going to bring against you, and so on. I don't know which of the above is not in your client's 100k file, or which of the things in my above list will be stripped out by using Distiller or Illustrator, but I bet that one of the people who has already posted in your thread does know, and might be talked into telling us.
    But, if you're trying to make your client happy and aren't actually personally invested in making the smallest PDFs known to man, and if you're located in the US, then perhaps the phrases "screenreaders... blind... accessibilty... lawsuit" spoken together might induce your client to rethink this arbitrary desire for miniscule file size of PDFs.
    Alternately, you could just save postscript out of both PDFs and just look at the .ps files in your favorite raw-text viewer.

    When I add photos to an email by dragging them in from iphoto the quality of the photos reduce.
    Philip, dragging from iPhoto will export previews of the image, not the original high resolution image. To export higher quality versions from iPhoto don't drag, but use "File > Export"
    You can also mail your photo directly from within iPhoto using "Share > Email" and set the "Size" to "Actual Size (Full Quality)"
