No, you can save directly to a disc image by doing the following:
1. Choose Build & Format when you're ready to make the disc.
2. In the General tab of the Build & Format window, you'll see a section for Destination. The output device here probably defaults to your DVD writer. Change it to "Hard Drive". Now, the output format item will become active, and likely defaults to ".img"
3. Perform the Build & Format, and when it finishes you'll have an .img file which you can burn to disc using Disk Utility, Toast, or any other program that can burn from a disc image.

I got 3.95GB available on my flash drive and need 4GB to reinstall lion osx how can i create space on usb using Disk Utility ??!

What is the capacity of the flash drive?
You might also be able to reinstall Lion without a flash drive, by booting up the computer holding the Command + R keys, and choosing Reinstall OS X.

  • How can you change the primary partition in Disk Utility?

I have made another partition using Disk Utility to install Snow Leopard. On my main partition Lion is installed but when i boot into Snow Leopard and try to delete the Lion partition it comes with an error "This operation requires a newer version of Mac OS X for this disk". I tried deleting the partition from Recovery HD but it says it couldn't unmount the disk.
Is this because Lion is the main partition, can you even delete the main partition?
And if I do delete the main partition will i be able to move the Snow Leopard partition "upwards" in Disk Utility?

    ralphfromhome wrote:
    1) First of all what is GUID.
It's the "partition map scheme" Apple uses so your firmware knows what is what on your boot drive, what partitions there are and what format they contain.
    2) Secondly, would I just be able to make a new image in disk utility and use that instead of an external hard drive?
No, you need something to boot off of and remove all data off the internal drive that's going to be reformatted with a new parttion, that's why you use the free Carbon Copy Cloner, it does both in one shot and it "blesses" the drive to make it bootable.
    3) When I use Carbon Copy cloner will it only copy Snow Leopard Installation or all of my files also?
It copies everything in your Snow Leopard partition to the external drive, files, programs the OS everything except whats in the Trash.
    4) In your 8th step you mentioned repairing permissions on both. Both of what?
Both drives, the internal and the external clone in Disk Utility (ignore the long list that appears)
It's a safety check to make sure your permissions are set back to original settings, I think the newer version of CCC now does this, but I havent' checked, doesn't hurt to do it again.
    5) If you still feel like typing can you tell me how long this whole process might take?
    Formatting a external drive
You should Erase with Zero option first, that will take a hour per 500GB
Formatting shoud be rather fast, a few minutes.
Cloning Snow Leopard to the external drive should take about a hour per 500GB
Formatting the internal drive a zero erase first for safety should take another hour per 500GB
Reverse cloning Snow Leopard back onto the internal drive should take another hour per 500GB
Good thing about it, it's pretty much all ciick and go watch TV while it works.
I was actually planning to make a Genius Bar appointment to fix it, by the way does that cost much?
No idea, but you don't have to pay if you get a external drive for $70 or so, CCC is free.
You get to keep the external drive and use it later for cloning as hard drives die all the time, the clone would get you back to using the computer.

  • How do I unlock my hard drive (using disk utility or otherwise)?

    Help!
I accidentally locked my Mac hard drive where I know the system password, but now it won't boot up.  When I go to disk utility to try to change the password or unlock the drive, I see my hard drive, but when I click on the drive and go to the file menu, I don't have the option that I've seen in some solutions to this problem posted on this site (including one by Dr Mac that describes going to the command under "file" as "unlock drive name" - which doesn't seem to be an option for me)  (Instead, my options are new window, new, open disk image, close, get info, and unmount (name of my hard drive)).  In grey, and not available, are the options - "eject, enable journaling, change password, and turn off encryption."
How do I get to a point where I can enter the system password and get back into my computer?  Any assistance you can offer would be hugely appreciated!
    Jim

Boot into recovery mode (hold down the ⌘R keys on restart), select the Terminal app from the Utilities menu option, and copy & paste in these one liners into the window that pops up, following each with hitting the return key. At the Password: prompt, enter your admin user password and hit the return key.
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
Then, select Startup Disk from the Utilities menu, select the normal boot volume, and click the Restart button.

  • How do you save data to ascii using Diadem

Is this possible? If not, does anyone have a solution?
Best regards and thanks in advance

    Hi Mpc138,
Have you tried the NAVIGATOR menu "File >> Save as...", then changing the "Save as type:" field from TDM to "Textfile - Auto detect"?  The name of that field will be different in older DIAdem versions, probably something with "CSV" in it.

  • How do I duplicate an audio cd using Disk Utility?

I follow the instructions and after it creates the image it says to put in the new cd. Then it says there is not enough room on the new cd and won't let me continue. But it is a new blank cd.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You can buy a larger blank CD (usually find them on the internet, google is your friend), but you must also make sure your CD burner can process them (you can find that info on the net too).
I know many of the pioneer burners (Mac uses Pioneer on a lot of their computers) support the larger CD's, but you will be wise to verify the burner before ordering the larger CD's (of course you can still use them to burn a standard size CD, they just cost more than a standard CD).

  • How do you save voice memos

How do you save voice memos, and use them as ringtones or text tones?

    From the Users Guide:
    Syncing Voice Memos
iTunes syncs voice memos to your iTunes library when you connect iPod touch to
your computer. This lets you listen to voice memos on your computer and provides a
backup if you delete them from iPod touch.
Voice memos are synced to the Voice Memos playlist. iTunes creates the playlist if it
doesn’t exist. When you sync voice memos to iTunes, they remain in the Voice Memos
app until you delete them. If you delete a voice memo on iPod touch, it isn’t deleted
from the Voice Memos playlist in iTunes. However, if you delete a voice memo from
iTunes, it is deleted from iPod touch the next time you sync with iTunes.
You can sync the iTunes Voice Memos playlist to the Music app on iPod touch using
    the Music pane in iTunes.
Sync the Voice Memos playlist to iPod touch:
1 Connect iPod touch to your computer.
2 In iTunes, select iPod touch in the Devices list.
3 Select Music at the top of the screen.
4 Select the “Include voice memos” checkbox and click Apply.
Some users have had to create the Voice Memos playlist since it did not get automatically created.

  • Clone Drive using Disk Utility

    Greetings,
Recently my 15, Aluminum FW800 has had the black screen of death. where I can only make out the faintest images on the screen. I took it to my local Genius bar, where he suggested that I send it in for the flat fee of 320 to get it fixed. I figured thats a good deal, so I agreed.
The problem, however, is that he said they may replace the hard drive... thus I need a complete backup of my drive. I used the backup utility in Tiger and selected the entire drive, and 4 hours later I had it copied to an external drive. However, I have also heard that you can clone a drive using disk utility. I figure if this is possible, i might as well try, since I have the space and redundancy is the key to an effective backup.
As mentioned above, though, I can only barely make out the screen, and have no instructions on how to do this backup. Does anyone know of a link that will guide me step by step through this process? I would hate to press the wrong button and erase my drive before its necessary.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Don't forget that applications have Help menu and Disk Utility has Restore feature (tab).
Before you start, make sure to do Get Info on the drive you want to restore to (target) and turn OFF the "Ignore Ownership" first.
Click on the left side icon for the volume you want to backup (source) and drag it into the appropriate field. Same for target volume.
Apply and sit back while it copies.
When done, use First Aid to Repair Permissions on the target (I would also do same for your source before you begin).
If you don't see and can't repair permissions on the target, something isn't right.
Now make sure you can boot from the target. Make sure it shows up in Startup Disk and try.

  • Burn a data cd using disk utility

Ok, all I want to do it burn a data cd using disk utility. Everything I read talks about "disk images" and "ISO's" how do I just pick a file and burn it? When I go into disk utility and click burn all of my files are transparent and I can't select any of them. How do I simply burn files?

    Hi,
You shouldn't need to use Disk Utility to burn a plain data CD/DVD.
Have a read of this article on how to do it:

    Hope that helps.

  • IMovie crashed, lost project. How do you SAVE in iMovie? Where's the file?

Just spent 4-5 hours building a complicated movie from a year's worth of footage. At some point, iMovie crashed. I think I lost all those hours of creative decision making, since I cannot see the file when I reopen iMovie.
There is no "open" command in the file menu. There is no "save" command in the file menu.
This would imply that Apple was autosaving for me to save me trouble. Hmm. I can save in almost every program I use, and revert, and save versions.
How do you save a project in iMovie? I don't see save in the file menu, as has been the steadfast tradition of Apple applications since I purchased my first Mac in 1984. What in the blazes have you done with SAVE? It is so basic.
Along the same line, where is the project file located on my hard drive? I would like to open it. Since I assume you have been autosaving to somewhere, could you please let me know where my file is saved.
    <Edited by Host>

This just appeared to happen to me too.  I tried clicking on the file in Movies/iMovie Projects.  That didn't work.
Then, I made a copy of the  file in a safe place.  I noticed it was 2.2 MB, so something had to be in there.  Next, I started iMovie and clicked the Project Library arrow.  The project was listed there.  I opened it and got back most but not all of the work.  It lost a lot of my audio changes.  Here's the thing.  I worked until about midnight, and then left iMovie up and running til noon.  You would think it would have autosaved the changes by the time I came back.  I suggest making your own copy of the file now and then, just in case.

  • How do you save dynamic data type, from the DAQ assistant, for use in Excel or matlab?

Currently, I have the following basic VI setup to save Data from my PCI6221 Data Aquisition Card.  The problem I'm having is I keep getting the last iteration of the while loop in the measurement file and that's pretty much it.  When I try to index the data leaving the loop it gives me a 2D array of Data which cannot be input into the "Write to Measurement File" VI.  How would I save this to a useful Data/time step format?  I was wondering of a way to continuously collect the Data and then save it in a large measurement file that I would manipulate in Matlab/excel?  Am I using the wrong type of loop for this application?  I also noticed my Dynamic Data array consists of data, time, timestep and then a vector of the data taken.  Is it possible to just get a vector of the time change per sample alongside the data?    Sorry for the barrage of questions but any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

There is a VI in the Express > Signal Manipulation palette called "From DDT" that lets you convert from the Dynamic Data Type to other data types that are more compatible with operations like File I/O....for instance, you could convert your DDT into a 2D array and use the Write To Spreadsheet File.vi.  Just a thought...

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

  • How do you save an iMovie project as a file?

how do you save an imovie as a windows file?

You first have to format the External drive as Mac OS Extended. This can be done with Disk Utility which is located in the Utilities Folder inside the Applications Folder. Once formatted as a native Mac OS drive, iMovie will allow you to 'turn on' the visibility of the external drive. Make sure to make the hard drive visible in the Events Library by going to the View Menu > Group Events by Disk. In the Projects Folder you should also see the same drive.
Drag your Project folders to the external drive icon in the Project Library. Also drag your Event Folders to the external drive (but make sure to drag it to the icon that is visible in the Event Library, don't drag it to the Project Library drive icon).
This dragging operation will 'duplicate' your Project Folders and Event Folders on the external drive. So to make space on your internal drive, always delete the original folders AFTER you make copies of them on the External drive. In the future when you are importing video into a New Event, make sure to choose the external drive as the location for the the New Event folder. Similalrly create a new Project Folder in the external drive location in the Project Library.
iMovie doesn't have save menu, it auto-saves in the background continuously as you work on the Project. That way you don't lose any work by forgetting to save the project.
