How do you search notes on a macbook?

So, I finally bought a Mac after realizing that they are far more efficient than their competitor. I am learning how to use it, but perhaps I am very stuck in my old Windows habits. I used to keep a lot of usernames and passwords in a simple text file on my PC and everytime I went to a forum or website that asked me to log in, I would simply use CTL+F to find the web address, and then be able to see what email/username/password I used for that particular site.
On getting my Mac, I transferred this file to the Mac, so that I can continue to use the text file, but now I can't seem to find a way of searching within the text to find a particular string.
Is it possible? Please can someone tell me what the key combination is. I have looked but cannot find it. Thank you, in anticipation.

Thank you Carolyn. I tried Spotlight and sure enough, it finds the files that contain the text I searched for, but it didn't seem to highlight the text within the file. For example, there is a soccer player called 'something Laudrup' and I can't remember his first name. I know it's somewhere in the text below and I'd like to find the line of text that it's in.
Is there a way to do this? Before I jsut used CTL+F and typed in 'Laudrup' and it would take me straight to the first instance in the text of 'Laudrup' and also offer me a next. Pretty much the same as finding text on a website, where of course, cmd+f works
Here's the sample text..
It was certainly an evening to remember for England Under-21 international Shelvey, who left Anfield for the south Wales club in the summer. The £5m signing put the Swans ahead when he left new Reds defender Mamadou Sakho flat-footed to calmly stroke a left-foot effort past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Liverpool had not previously conceded in the Premier League and they were gifted a way back into the game little over 100 seconds later by Shelvey. His careless pass back towards goalkeeper Michel Vorm was seized upon by Sturridge, who netted his fourth top-flight goal of the season with a clinical finish. Sharp Sturridge Daniel Sturridge is the first player to score in each of Liverpool's first four games of a Premier League season. The Reds dominated the opening half hour as the vibrant trio of Moses, Philippe Coutinho and Sturridge pulled apart the Swansea defence with pace and precision. And they should have doubled their advantage when Moses and Sturridge combined. On-loan Chelsea winger Moses surged past two defenders near the left corner flag and dinked in a perfectly weighted cross towards an unmarked Sturridge. The England striker seemed certain to score but his header was directed too close to Vorm, who made a magnificent save. Shortly before half-time, they did take a deserved lead. Shelvey sloppily handed possession to Moses, who drove at the backpedalling Swansea defence before accurately shooting into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. Victory would have given Liverpool their best start to a season since 1990-91 and for the opening hour they seemed firmly on course to achieve that. But Coutinho's departure early in the second half with a shoulder injury following a robust challenge from Swans skipper Ashley Williams disrupted their fluency. Miserly Liverpool Jonjo Shelvey's goal was the first Liverpool had conceded in the Premier League in 419 minutes of play Swansea, playing the first of seven games in 21 days, had not created any clear-cut second-half chances before Michu's leveller, but they had been encouraged to press forward by Liverpool's willingness to sit back on their lead. They were rewarded when Shelvey flicked a right-wing cross into the path of Michu, who swept a first-time shot beyond Mignolet. The leveller switched the momentum of the match firmly in Swansea's favour and, as the encounter moved into the closing stages, Michael Laudrup's men looked the likeliest to grab a dramatic winner. Shelvey sent a low free-kick fizzing into the arms of Mignolet, before substitute Jonathan de Guzman twice went close. Swansea manager Michael Laudrup: "We had to perform better in the second half and the boys did a good job. "We got the equaliser, we could have won the game but I'm pleased with the result after all." Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "I thought for the first 65 minutes we were very good. We showed incredible character to get back level so soon after they scored. "I was disappointed with their second goal and then the momentum changed for the last 25 minutes and we had to show character and resilience. "But we showed tonight our game is getting better and we have the character to get a lot of results."

Like when Setup Assistant fires up and lets you migrate? In general, that would imply having to do a complete reinstall. And I've always been under the impression that when you do that, the reinstall software does not contain all the extra goodies that come with a new from-factory install (such as iLife).
But as Prof. Kappy wants to know, the specifics are very version dependent.

How do you right click on a macbook. i'm brand new to all this mac stuff. I dont want to have to buy a mouse for it.

Under OS X you can also set it so that you place 2 fingers on the trackpad and click. This means you can do it with one hand and not have to press any keys to do it. Just go to system preferences> keyboard and mouse> trackpad and check the box that says place two fingers on trackpad and click for secondary click.
I am using this method and its seems to work fine.
    Hope that helps.

How do you search for a song in the latest version of ITunes??
Yes this might be the stupidest question ever, but leave it to Apple to make the simplest thing hard.
In EVERY version of Itunes, up until 11, you used to be able to type an artists name, song name, or album into the search field and it would narrow it down so that you can see what you are looking for (in the list below).  Now, Itunes tells you that you have music by said artist, yet doesn't list them whatsoever. Furthermore, when you click on the results it doesn't list them for you either.
I'm sure it is some weird setting, but cannot for the life of me find.  I cannot name one application that doesn't show a list when you type in the search field.  Augh!
    Please help.

  • How come you can not use more than 126GB of a 1.5TB diskdrive with LabVIEW Real Time?

How come you can not use more than 126GB of a 1.5TB diskdrive with LabVIEW Real Time?
This is only 8.3% of the available disk drive space!

National Instrument's solution is either reformat you drive to less than 126GB or replace the drive with one less than that size.
Please NI, tell me you are going to fix your LabVIEW Real Time soon, and that we won't have to wait for LabVIEW RT 9.2.1 in 2011 for this one to be fixed.
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/Hard_drive_capacity_over_time.svg
Drives as large as 126GB or more have been around since about mid 2002.  That's about 7 Years now and LabVIEW Real Time STILL can't use drives larger that 126GB!  Please NI.  Do something.
We deserve fixes to the old versions of LabVIEW RT.  How about updates to LabVIEW RT.  Such as 7.0.2, 7.1.2, 7.6.2, 8.0.2, 8.2.2, 8.6.2.
We don't need new features or versions of LabVIEW RT such as 9.0 until we have some of bugs fixed in the existing versions.

NI is not making the Real Time OS in house. I do not remember which firm that is making it. Anyway you are allowed to use a hard drive that has been partitioned. And 126GB is some space is it not? I remember Bill Gates declared one time that 640Kb ram should be more than enough for any PC application also in the future
    Coq Rouge (formerly t06afre),
The RealTime OS is an NI Product that is purchased from NI.
NI may or may not outsource design, developement, or manufacturing of the products that it sells under its own Company name.
For this reason I would be concerned if I were a PXI Embedded Controller designer/developer in the United States.
Yes, 126GB is some space.  I see that there are now 2TB drives available.  126GB would be 6.3% of a new 2TB drive.  Should we all be happy with being able to use 6.3% of the available drive space.  Moore's Law seams to be alive and well.  Drives larger than 126GB have been readily available for 5 or 6 Years.  This should not be a surprise to NI.  Why don't they do something about it.
Thanks for the trivia on Bill Gates.  I must have missed that one since I don't try to keep up with Microsoft.  I believe that he is a wonderful person and he and his family are doing wonders for the world in their "retirement".   The world needs more like him.
What I do remember is Steve Jobs telling us that we would never need more that 128MB and that we would never to need to do anymore software development because everything was already in the "ToolBox".

how do you transfer data from your macbook to the ipad?

What data do you want to transfer ? Music, films, tv shows, photos and ibooks are done by syncing in iTunes (for which there is some help in the iPad manual which can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad). Documents can also be done via iTunes, but it depends upon the app and the transfer method(s) that it supports e.g. file sharing via the bottom of the device's apps tab on your computer's iTunes, via your wifi network, cloud services, email attachments etc
Edit : have you got the Keynote app on your iPad, or any other app that supports keynote presentations ? Without a 'suporting' app you can't store a document/file on the iPad (unlike computers files have to be stored within an app)..

I'm trying to return a list of all .epub files located in folder called Books.  The Books folder contains about 100 different folders.  The sub folders contain either an epub or mobi file.
In other words, how do you search by the type - epub?
Thanks for any help / pointers.

Just write on the search box ".epub". Then it returns a list of with all files and path.
You can also hit 'cmd+i' for each file details.

  • How do you search through configured Alternate Extensions to correct error message : The phone number or extension has already been assigned to some other object.

When configuring a new Unity Voicemail Account I receive this message : The phone number or extension has already been assigned to some other object. I understand that this means that the 10 digit number I am trying to configure as the alternate extension for this user is already configured for another object with Unity.
I need to search by the 10 digit number and determine where it is configured so I can change it and map to the correct end user.
I have attempted to to search Users via DTMF Access ID using the 10 digit number with nothing being returned via that search.
How do I Search all of the copnfigured Alternate Extensions within our Unity Server?

A subscriber info dump is likely the fastest way.  If you're curious regarding other methods, you can also use the Data Link Explorer (CUDLE) tool which is in the Cisco Unity Tools Depot.  All extensions for all objects are referenced in the "DTMFAccessId" table.  The View menu has a Query Builder which you can use to compile a SQL query that searches for a digit string.  It's best to search for both the 10 digit string as well as an abbreviated string as Unity sees them essentially the same and they are usually should be associated with a single subscriber.  Once you find a match, you can use the "ParentObjectId" value associated with the DTMF access ID to look for a matching owner in the "GlobalSubscriber" table.  The ParentObjectId should match the SubscriberObjectId for a subscriber (assuming the DTMF access ID is assigned to a subscriber).  This is the same thing as looking at SQL; however, you are not directly accessing the DB so this is generally considered the safest way to browse and get a feel for where things are.

  • How do you install Windows 7 on Macbook Air with a Windows 7 ISO image?

Macbook Airs have no optical drives, and I can't buy one. I do, however, have the Windows 7 ISO image. And I also have access to a Windows 7 PC. I found an article on CNET on installing from a Flash Drive, but that requires the CD. I also have a hard drive (120GB) and Flash USB (4GB), if they could help. Please help me as many programs I am familiar with are only windows-based. I am tried using open-source software like Wineskin Winery and WineBottler, but to no avail, I always end up confused with them. Please help me.

Okay, how do you use Wine? I don't want to install lots of software like MacPorts, just want the minimal software. So there are many things like Wine, WineBottler, and Wineskin Winery. What do I use for what? For example, I want to turn a windows game (Age of Empires 2 for example) into a full Mac App. How would I go about this?
I tried researching but it is so in-depth with terminal commands and all(i dont want to risk ruining my computer)
What is crossover? Is it another wine app?
Oh, and I tried Winery Wineskin...why doesn't it work? It keeps installing random things like Gecko, or Mono, but in the end, it doesn't work. Do I need the windows app's executable, or the window's apps's installation executable??
What are engines, and how many do I need to create? I think the best thing for me is to learn wine, because installing windows with bootcamp isn't worth the effort, I think, with me having only a few apps i need to run.
As for learning mac apps only, well, Windows apps dominate the market with most of applications being made for windows, especially games, with 90% market. So for some apps, there just isn't a mac version available, or if there is, it's costly. (Which you already know I can't buy things)
You probably cannot afford to buy Crossover either.  It is designed for user friendliness though, but of course Wine cannot run everything.
Yes you have to learn some things to use Wineskin.  Normally on Gecko and Mono prompt, just cancel them.  Gecko is needed if you have a program using mshtml (its basically a replacement for Internet Explorer for programs that use parts of it).  Mono is a replacement for .NET if your program requires that.  You do not want to install them if you don't need them as they will just waste space.  You can always refresh the wrapper later on and get the same prompts if you find out you need them later.
You can copy the full installed version of a game inside the Wineskin wrapper and try to set it up that way, but its usually easier to just run the installer and install it inside the wrapper just like you'd install it in Windows.
An Engine is something you download... its basically a specific Wine build made for a Wineskin wrapper.
If you do not want to learn Wineskin enough to get in and port your programs yourself, you can often find other people who have done so (at least with games).
Check out sites like PaulTheTall.com who has tons of Wineskin wrappers already made and ready to go for many games... you just download the wrapper, install the game you want in it using the normal Installer, then its ready to go.  Many you'll need to manually update yourself to Wineskin 2.5.8 though since all the older versions broke ok the OS X 10.8.2 and 10.7.5 update, and Paul hasn't gotten to all of them yet since he has hundreds (including AoE 2 i think).
There is also Portingteam.com which has tons of pre-made wrappers for games (Including Cider hacks from official games).
If your talking about non-Game apps though, you can normally find an alternative... many of which are free.
