How do you secure PDFs in Leopard?

I've noticed when printing to PDF in Leopard that I have "Security Options" which include requiring a password to open the document. The option doesn't specify what level of security this is though - is it the original or much more recent (and secure) password protection?
In the event this option provides the older PDF password protection, how do you get the full suite of PDF security options when creating PDF documents on Leopard?
Thanks!

Actually... I was referring to even before 128-bit AES was available for PDF protection. On some PDF aware applications I've seen options that include (I think) "Original Password Protection", "128-bit AES", and "256-bit AES." I'm curious to know if the Leopard PDF print "Security Options" function is 128-bit AES or something else.
Anyway, I think your advice is sound... I'll probably end up buying a bunch of the full Adobe Acrobat.

How do you secure imail when used being used in iweb? People can mess w/my settings in iweb imail window.

    What is iMail?
And what is an iWeb iMail window?
iWeb is part of iLife 06 which is an application used to create websites hosted on .Mac.
Are you referring to Apple's Mail application and webmail access using a browser such as Safari to access your .Mac account?
Which people can mess with what settings? You shouldn't allow anyone else to access your Mac when logged in to your account and home folder/directory. OS X was designed for multiple users of the same Mac with each regular user having their own computer login account (with or without admin privileges) and associated home folder/directory to store and access their data and settings for their login account only.

I'm not sure if you can do that with CreatePDF.  Try it; you got one free use when you sign up with Acrobat.com

You can't, the camera kit connection kit which has a USB connection only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, and doesn't support the copying of any content off the iPad - you will either need to go via your computer.

  • How do you get PDFs to display the same fonts everywhere?

I have Adobe Acrobat 7 and I'm trying to convert a Word document into a PDF. It is set to embed fonts. The whole point of putting it into a PDF is so we can mail it around and it will look the same to everyone. However, when viewed on another computer (which presumably doesn't have our special font), it displays wrong. No error was displayed during the creation of the PDF. This is becoming intensely frustrating as we create a lot of documents to be printed by other people.
I have tried disabling "use local fonts" to see how it would display on other computers, but it looks identical to what I'm expecting. It's only a problem on other people's computers.

Also, when you say you have it set to embed the fonts, just how did you do that setup and how did you create the PDF from WORD - print to the Adobe PDF printer or PDF Maker, as well as what job settings file that was used. You may have done it all correctly and it is a font issue as graffiti has mentioned, but there are other issues that may have been created with your process that may also answer the question.
Looking to see if the fonts are embedded is the first step to resolving the issue.

  • How can you securely erase my eMacs HDD without the use of a disk drive?

I want to get rid of my eMac, it runs fine and would be a waste if I just threw it out, but the disk drive doesn't work, how can I securely delete the HDD to get all personal info off of it so I could either sell it or give it away while still working? I also, surprisingly after nearly 15 years, have misplaced the original startup discs.

Well, you didn't state that in your original post. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Here's an option for you:
Open Accounts preferences and click on the lock icon to authenticate. Create a new user account by clicking on the Add [-] button. Be sure to configure this account with Administrator status. Log out of your account and log into the new account. Now delete your account. Be sure to select the last option that completely removes your account. If there is a sub-option to Securely Erase then select that option. If not then see Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Removing files from your computer. Note the option for securely erasing free space. It's time consuming but will assure none of your files can be accessed. If you aren't concerned about your data's security then you can skip any options to securely erase free space.

  • How do you create PDF that works across different OS?

Please advise how to create proper PDF from Acrobat XI so that I can pass this on to a person who is generating files that do not work for me on a Linux system.  Because I use Linux I cannot use Acrobat, but I have no problems with files created by other people on Windows or Mac systems.
I still own some Adobe products for use on old PCs hence my ability to post this question.

  • How do you create pdfs in CS5?

My ad department currently uses CS4 along with QuarkXpress. I create pdfs in Quark by using Distiller, converting postscript files to pdfs. However in CS4, If you upgrade Acrobat 9 you will lose the Distiller function. Does CS5 Acrobat X Pro for mac have Distiller? I've searched around this website and it looks like it's provided for PC. Will I be able to use it for a mac? If not how do I create a pdf in CS5? Will there be an Acrobat printer driver? I liked how in Distiller you can set up different printer settings such as how good the resolution would be for a pdf. I'd like to get an answer before purchasing this product and installing it.

There are beoming more and more reasons to stop using a distilled postscript workflow and Apple inadvertantly negated the abilty with Snow Leopard. (You know that the print industry is evolving. Your clients are going to expect pdf files with live links, bookmarks, interactive elements; all features lost in distilling.)  The "we've done it this way for years" attitude needs to be rethought. If you're print vendor dictates distilling postscript files, they haven't updated either their equipment or their webpage for a decade or both!
On a PC, you will not lose the ability to create and distill postscript files with any update, and to my knowledge, AA 9 (no  longer available) does not hinder the ability on Mac, but rather an update to OSX 10.6 does.
Your mention of CS4; is that in reference to the Adobe Creative Suite, or a stand alone product - Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. All Adobe products create pdf native from the application. If your daily version of Quark does not offer the same ability, you need to keep current and update or stray in the past.

  • How Do You Securely Wipe All Info Off Internal Hard Drive?

A friend has to ship her new iMac back to Apple for a replacement -- long story.
But before she ships it off she wants to wipe the internal hard drive of all her personal info -- mail, photos, music, documents, ...
What's the best way to securely wipe that internal drive?

you can do it using the erase tab in disk utility. there is an option to erase securely. it writes zeros over everything on the drive. do just one zero erase pass. disk utility lets you choose multiple erase passes but that's a vast overkill.
to do it to an internal drive boot from the snow leopard dvd and use disk utility there to erase the drive. when done restart and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager. eject the isntall dvd there and shut down.

  • How do you create PDF of multiple layers in Illustrator CS3 so each layer is on separate page?

I am using CS3 and designing business cards. I have 10 names layed out as a separate layer in Illustrator.
I am now trying to save the Illustrator file as a PDF so that each business card appears on 1 page in 1 PDF document.
The PDF is saving as one page with all the names jumbled together rather than as separate pages. Clicking "Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers" does not work. Does anyone know how to save multiple page PDF from a layered Illustrator file? Thanks.

with a script probably check with the Illustrator scripting forum
the is away you can manually do it but it is quite cumbersome you make a document large enough to tile to the number of pages you need in the pdf.
then position in order of the tiles the art  and as you position the art you also create a new layer for that art. You don't actually have a different layer in this case for each page you just really need the art properly tiled.
You then have to print to pdf or to postscript and then distill.
Like I say very cumbersome but it was the way they use to do it. CS 4 makes this easier though different layers would still require a script.
    Best to use different artboards.

  • How do you open .pdf file in pages???

This seems like something very easy to do, but I can't get it to work.  How do I save a .pdf file from a disk into .pages, so I can work on it and make changes? I can save it in pages, but then it won't open in .pages.  it seems like it should be so easy.  About to break down and buy microsoft word and excel for the mac.

I have this http://www.smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html but it does cost $60 (got it for $20 on some special years ago). There is a free trial if you only need to get out of a short term problem. And I think there are free alternatives but don't know. BTW, I have no connection to PDFpen.

  • How do you secure updates to Robohelp packages?

    Hello all,
I'm building a knowledgebase type application for our technical group to take out to the field where there is sometimes little to no mobile data signal. Robohelp seemed to fit the bill with it's AIR packaging ability, and I have commenting and auto online update notifications and installation working.
The issue I'm running into is this:
If a person who has left the company still has the program, or made a copy of the original .AIR installation file, they will forevermore get online updates.
I have thought about putting the online update .xml and .air file in a password protected area, but that would mean the automatic update check would obviously fail since it's being asked for login credentials. I don't see any options for password protecting the AIR application either.
What are my options? Any ideas on how I might accomplish this?
We do have a secured company website area that employees with proper credentials can access. I do have webspace that can support basic unencrypted or encrypted authentication. I do not want to go a VPN route because the VPN access is terribly slow, and the knowledgebase application is 200+MB.
Is there a way I can make the user log in to a website through the AIR help application, and then trigger the AIR app to check for an update?
    Thanks in advance,
    --Hans

Sorry but what you need is a feature change and pending that, there's nothing else I can think of.

  • How do you launch Pages in Leopard?

Double clicking the Pages icon in a Finder window launches Pages of course, and it works fine.
Likewise, launching it from the list of Recent Items works.
However, in Tiger I used to also launch it from the Application folder, which I had conveniently put in the Dock. Click on the Application folder and hold down the mouse button, drag to the iWork folder and then to the Pages application.
This was very convenient for all those applications that are inside their own folders in the Application folder, like Photoshop, Excel, Pages, and so on.
With Leopard, that way of launching an application is gone. Click on the Application folder in the Dock and you get a "Stack" and you have to click on the iWork folder which will open a Finder window, where you can click on the Pages icon - then click on the close button of the Finder window to get rid of the Desktop clutter.
I was wondering if anyone else finds this inconvenient, and if you have found any clever workaround?

I don't have Leopard yet... kinda disappointing about the non-hierarchical stacks. But I would think you can work around this by creating aliases of your subfoldered apps.

On the Mac, option-double-clicking on something in the Finder will open the item and close the window automagically to reduce clutter.
