How do you share a external hard drive between 2 computers

I have been trying to access my external hard drives that are hooked up to my mac mini from my imac and cant seem to do it. They are listed in the shared folder on the mac mini already.

Select the folders of files and Finder> Get Info and at the bottom change the permissions to everyone read and write.
then click the spoky thing and "apply to enclosed items"

Ensure it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, FAT16, or FAT32, connect it to a self-powered hub, and plug it into the Time Capsule's USB port. If the drive is Ethernet and not USB, ignore everything else and just plug it in.

If you don't see the external HD when you connect it to the Mac, then you need to use Disk Utility to format the XHD to a FAT32 drive. Once done it will read on the Mac and PC without any problems.

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

  • How do I share an external hard drive with 3 macs

On my gmac, I have an external hard drive that all my itunes music/videos are being saved to. I would like to give the other macs access to the itunes music but can not seem to network it. I have no problem logging on to any of the three computers and sharing/using folders from each mac but I can not get the other two computers to see my external hard drive. I tried using SharePoints but the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows up at the "computer" level, whereas the networking shows up at the internal hard drive level. I've searched all over the boards but can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular situation. I am using a SeaGate external hard drive that is formated as FAT32.

Highlight the Share in Sharepoints>Normal Shares tab. Look down & right for the Windows (SMB) sharing and change it Shared(+). Click Update Share, Share should now show a + under SMB & AFS. Click the Little Show File System Properties button, set users & group, Permission, etc.,Update Share.
    That's the basics.

  • How do you erase an external hard drive which will not show up on your computer?

I bought a LaCie porsche design 2TB external hard drive  from the Apple Store to use with time machine on my MAC 2 months ago. It will no longer show up on my desktopn. After speaking with LaCie, they sent me a replacement. However, I have to send the brooken one back to them and since we could not erase it or anything on my Mac is there anyway to erase the hard drive before sending it back to them with all my information on there?

I know. But after Yahoo, Target , Neimans and others. But I agree. They even sent me a more expensive replacement as they did not have my model in stock and is backordered. So, a win win situation. I was impressed that the tech person spent about an hour on the phone with me trying a variety of options. At first, they were going to charge me shipping- but then she changed her mind and shipped the replacement 1 day fed ex. I guess that is why I always buy LaCie vs others. My older LaCie which I still had but was smaller- I plugged in and did a back-up and I had just enough room on it so I have that for safe keepings now as well.
Thanks again for your pleasant response. I guess I need to limit my profile to "registered members" only. I hope Apple monitors these discussions and people's responses periodically.

  • How do you format an External Hard Drive

I'm New to Mac. I have a Mac Book Pro Intel. I need to format an old PC hard drive so it works as an external drive. I have it in a enclosure and connected by firewire. The Mac reads it but can not write to it. Plus I don't even know if you format like I did in windows PC.
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hey,
Here is a great way on how to format your drive for Mac. You would need to choose the MS-DOS format.
    To do this:
    1. Go to Disk Utility
    2. Find Your External HD on the left hand side and click on it
    3. Go to the Erase panel
    4. Choose the Volume Format as MS-DOS File System
    5. Name the Drive if you wish
    6. Erase
For a more graphical representation follow the link below:
Formatting an External HD (Note: In this case where it says "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended" you would pick the MS-DOS option instead.)
This allows you to use your dirve with both OS's and having the option of writing and reading for both. If you have any important documents or things on your HD I would just copy them over into a folder on your internal HD and then when the drive is formatted, just shoot them back over.

Simply connect the drive to one of the two computers and there you are!
Use your network and turn on file sharing. It's that simple.

how do i add an external hard drive to my network

If your external HDD has a USB interface and is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT32, you can connect it directly to the USB port on your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). You would then use the AirPort Utility to configure the AEBSn to share out the HDD over the network.
Please see the following Apple Support article on how to mount the HDD on your computer.

  • How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?

How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?  I have the latest Apple TV, ipads, iPhones as well as a solid HP Windows machine all on my home network.  Is there a way that I can connect my hard drive to my receiver or Apple TV directly so that the digital media is available on my network 24/7 rather than have it connected to my computer and available through Home Share which never works anyway??

Sorry it's all done through iTunes.

  • I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive?

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
