How do you share Fibre attached Raid with a windows network?

We have a G5, I'm not sure of the OS version, and I am able to access the desktop on a windows computer, but we can't figure out how to share the 10TB of Raid storage.
The Fibre card is from Apple, and the Raid array is made by GVS.
We can't figure out how to share the raid.
Thanks,
~Jay
FYI: I need to access the video files on the raid, and also add audio files to it for use in FCP. I prefer to work in Vegas and Wavelad for the initial audio mix, then later I will do a final mix in Soundtrack Pro... I should have a MAC for that next week.

I finally typed in the right search string. There is a little free app called Sharepoints that allows you to share:)
I find this hard to believe, but it appears that OSX doesn't have hard drive sharing built in!
I am happily streaming uncompressed 10-bit SD over ethernet now.

  • How do you share thousands of pictures with text and captions outside of PSE?  (PSE 4)

One of my dad’s retirement passions is family genealogy and old family pictures.  Several years ago I gave my family PSE 4.0 for Christmas so that we could each have backup copies of our dad’s pictures.  Usually once per year, I made backup copies of everything and emailed the DVDs to my brothers and sisters.  Everyone knows the basic PSE 4 functions and share our dad's enjoyment with the old family photos.
My problem is that my dad is running out of pictures to scan.  He wants to “share” or “show” his photos with others so that he can “borrow” their photo albums in order to scan their photos.  He plans to attend a hometown high school reunion later this fall.  He hopes to "collect" photo albums from cousins and classmates.  I have been struggling with this for several days without any good ideas.
The scanned pictures lack any text (added as a layer?) or captions.  Creating a slideshow (on my dad’s computer is slow).  Also, a slideshow doesn’t let others select individual pictures to save from the slide show
He has old pictures pre-PSE 4 that allowed him to add captions directly to the picture when it was scanned.  I never liked this approach as it "destroyed" the actual picture but these old pictures are more easily shared as individual pictures.
How do you share thousands of pictures with text and captions outside of PSE?  Can you save or export a composite picture with all the layers?
Thanks in advance for your help and replies.

I think it is one of the printer option screens that gives me the choice of tabbed 4x6. All of the choices specifiy HP or Other so I am pretty sure it is printer software that offers me this choice.
Make sure your image has a 4x6 aspect ratio. I have been quite happy with the tabbed 4x6. Just need to remember to load the paper with the tab last.
So, in elements you set to 4x6, in printer options you should be able to choose 4x6 tabbed paper.

  • How can I share a laser printer with a windows laptop.

How can I share a laser printer with a windows laptop. I can't install software or drivers on the laptop for a USB switch box, but the printer drivers are already installed.
It is a work laptop and printer. There is no WiFi to the laptop, just USB.
Is there a USB switch box that does not need any drivers?
    Thanks
    Julie

    Hi
    Thanks.
I am not able to install any drivers or software on the work laptop and WiFi is not allowed either.
Currently I am swapping cables, but it means crawling under the desk and is a bit of a pain.
I was hoping that there would be a switch box that does not require drivers.
Crawling and banging my head it is, then!

  • How can you share a iPhoto library with another account user

I have recently seen the light and swapped from Windows to my lovely new iMac. However I am rather confused how I can configure my iPhoto library so my wife can view the same library in her account on the same machine (this was a simple thing within Windows, using shared folders). Am I missing something or do I have to duplicate the same library and place into my wife's account and then update each time we upload some photo's? Please help!

This may not be the "neatest" solution possible, but it's one that works. Just as iPhoto makes it easy to share photos between computers on the same network, you can also share photos between accounts on the same computer; but you'll have to be logged in with iPhoto running.
    1) Configure iPhoto in your account for photo sharing (from iPhoto, select Preferences > Sharing> Share my photos).
    2) Enable fast user switching from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options. This is the key to the process, which will allow you to remain logged in while your wife is also logged in. It's also a very handy feature if you and your wife use the computer a lot from your own accounts.
    3) Enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Remote Apple Events" from System Preferences > Sharing > Services. [I had already done this step, so I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary]
    4) With iPhoto up and running in your account, use Fast User Switching to log into your wife's account (ie, you remain logged-in). [The Fast User Switching menu will be in the upper right of the main menu bar.]
    5) From her iPhoto preferences, select Sharing > "Look for shared photos" if it's not already switched on.
Your photos will magically appear in the left hand column of your wife's iPhoto application using the name you designated in your copy of iPhoto.
Caveats: performance is not very good, you must be logged in and have iPhoto running, HP printers (if you have one) don't work well with fast user switching
Other solutions might be possible by "drilling a hole" into your account by altering the Unix permissions. I've used this technique to make my iTunes library available to other users on my machine. Such a solution would no doubt improve performance.
Finally, there are third-party products that allow you to manage multiple iPhoto libraries. I've never used these, but they might allow you to load the iPhoto library from another account assuming permissions are properly set.
Hope this is of some use; I'm sorry if it's a little more complicated than you might have expected.

  • How can you share only specific folders with windows

I took the following steps to share my macbookpro files with my desktop windows XP sp3. I am using a router to connect these two computers.
1)system preferences > sharing > file sharing > options > CHECK BOX "share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" >check box 'on' my one of the 2 accounts on macbookpro> hit ''Done'' > GREEN red dot next to "Windows Sharing: on"
    2) I then added 3 FOLDERS to the "shared folders:" list on 'system preferences > sharing > file sharing'
    3) system preferences > network > Location >"automatic" in the drop down menu > hit edit location and create a new location with the default name "Automatic Copy" Go to Advanced> WINS > change work group to "MSHOME" (this is the name of work group on my desktop windows pc)
    4) system preferences > accounts > other accounts> guest accounts: check the blue box " Allow guests to connect to shared folders"
    5) go to my network places on xp. > click add a network place>Next>choose another network location>Next>Browse>entire network>Microsoft windows nework>Mshome>Macbookpro>clicked on the folder ”my account from my step #1 "
Now ALL files on this account on my macbook are shared with my desktop.
THIS IS INTERESTING AS IN STEP 1, I Had given permission to share ONLY 3 FOLDERS and I do not want to share every single macbook folder from my account with this desktop.
Please help. I have been unable to fix it. I am very new to mac world.

You'll have to open another iCloud account - you can't share access to just part of the email account.
Go to http://appleid.apple.com and create a new ID - you will need a different non-Apple email address to do this.
Sign in with it in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars and enable 'Mail' in the checklist there. You should be asked to create a new @icloud.com address.
This account will then appear alongside your present one in Mail. Your lawyer can access it in the usual way - if he doesn't have a Mac he can set the account up manually using the server settings here:

  • How do you set up ftp services with outside of network access?

What are the steps to set up a password protected directory for our clients to ftp files to?
I've turned on ftp services and created a testftp directory, with access to everyome, but can't access the files. It never asks me for a password.
We have AT&T dsl service. The connection goes to a Linksys router and on to multiple switches. Each of our users have assigned static ip's.
    Thanks for the help,
    Chas

The Mac OS X Server Security manual has a discussion of setting up ftp and the share points and related. Here's the [Tiger Security|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/TigerServer_Security_Config021507.pdf] manual, and here's [Leopard|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/LeopardServer_Security_Configv10.5.pdf].
If you'd prefer a description here rather than the manuals, what follows are the basics.
I'm here assuming you have a firewall between the Internet and your server; a firewall attached to the DSL modem. If you have an external static IP and an internal private (192.168.0.0/16, 10.0.0.0/8, etc) via NAT, you'll need a firewall with reasonable port-mapping capabilities. If you're static and public throughout, you need only poke holes; you probably don't need the port-mapping stuff. (Or you could have a direct connection to your Mac OS X box; I don't usually configure things that way.)
First, open your firewall and allow access via the ftp ports (port 20 outbound and port 21 inbound, typically) and open up the ephemeral port range.
Then create a user and directory via whichever service you are using -- Workgroup Manager, Open Directory or otherwise. Within Workgroup Manager, you can set up share points; basically locations that the ftp daemon is permitted to touch.
Then wander into Server Admin and enable the ftp server.
Now if I wanted to do this without exposing my cleartext username and cleartext password over every hotel and coffee shop LAN I might use (and I'm not kidding; "ftp security" is an oxymoron), I'd create a username and its directory per your usual means, use Server Admin to configure and launch sftp daemon, and open up port 22 at the firewall. In my experience, sftp is easier to administer, and operates with ssh and with PKE authentication, and it doesn't post your password to Craigslist -- and beyond discussions of the (lack of) security, ftp tends to be somewhat fragile; it really gets into trouble traversing firewalls.
Given my experience with ftp over the years, here is [why I don't want to use ftp|http://64.223.189.234/node/530] -- sftp is just so much easier to deal with, and to secure.

I have a Mac running OS 10.8.3 and a Windows machine running Windows 8.
I create an account that is sharing only, enable File sharing, add a shared folder, give everyone read and write access, enable SMB, select that user, and enter the password.
On the Windows machine, when I log in as an administrator, I see a list of all the volumes and all the shares, and everything works as expected. When I login as the user I just created above, I see a folder with the name of the user with nothing in it; the shared folders and volumes don't appear. Guest isn't even an option.
How do I setup file sharing of multiple shares for users other than administrators?

    Roddy;
I have been authoring my own website for years and I used Netscape Communicator and up loaded it with Fetch and I just kind a got into iWeb a little bit deeper than I had before a I like it except I can't get a movie to show on a Windows machine (at least my daughters) to save myself.  I make the movies with Keynote and QuickTime and make a movie .MOV out of them. When I look at them on my Mac they are great but any Windows machine and it shows a little puzzle picture and says it won't show it.  So my question is what percentage of people's computers can't look at my movies. I am a guitar teacher of 45 years and I'm trying to archive my findings over the years and movies are an absolute must slideshows and that sort of sound moving pictures documents PDFs all that I bought your iWeb for musicians thing and I've read a bunch of other some stuff I understand but others I just have no idea what you're talking about you say I'm supposed to have a media player folder in my root folder and there is no such thing. There is a folder called media and it does have my movies .MOV in it. How can I make a Windows machine show it? Everything you sent me and told me just confuses me more.

One of you creates/owns the calendar on iCloud.com and then they can click the sharing icon (tilted wi-fi circle) and choose "private" put the other person's appleID email address and give View & Edit capability.  Then you should be able to Join the calendar and both make edits/updates to it.
