How long has it been since the Mac was plugged into AC power? If a long time, the internal 3.6V internal battery is weak or discharged, and needs replacement.

As you indicate you have 10.6, you will need to boot from the install DVD that came with your Mac. With the DVD in the Mac, hold down the C key on restart.
However, if your Mac is one of the ones listed here, and you updated the firmware as mentioned in the article, Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
Restart and hold down cmd-opt-r when you hear startup tone.
That will boot into Internet Recovery.  OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • HT1329 I have a dead computer with itunes on it.  How do I deauthorize a dead computer?

How do you deauthorize a dead computer for itunes?  We only get 5 computers, and I need a new computer to be authorized for itunes.

If you've got 5 computers authorised for the account in question, and you need to free up authorizations, I'd do a "Deauthorize All" from one of the computers you have access to, and then reauthorize the computers you have access to.

  • How do you boot from an external drive when internal drive is dead?

The internal drive is dead, but I have a complete dupolicate on my fire-wire external drive. I think I remember reading that there is a combination of keys to press down when starting to allow one to choose which drive to use as a startup volume. As it is, the thing won't start up at all.
So I know it's supposed to run from the external drive, but how do you get it to boot from it without having designated it as the startup when it was last running?

Hold down the Option key when booting the computer.
When I asked the question I was working on my daughter's ibook.
Now I'm back home and I have a firewall external drive, so I tried pressing option when I started and icons for startup drive come up BUT there is only one icon -- that being for my internal drive. I know that the external drive, which has a duplicate of the internal, is capable of starting it up ok, because when I go ahead and , after starting it up on the internal drive, then pick the external drive to start and then restart it, it goes to the external drive ok. But again, if it has been preferrenced to start on the internal drive and I do the thing by pressing with option when I start, it doesn't give me the option to use the external drive. (The external drive is partioned, and the duplicate startup is in one of the volumes, but I don't think this should have anything to do with anything, since it can start up using the appropriate external hard drive volume when I have selected it in my preferences.)

The Apple drivers you install in Windows also puts a Startup Drive icon in the Task Bar. Choose that to change the startup disk back OS X.

How do you change the window size for Ebusiness Suite after you log in. Currently it displays at 100% of the screen. I want to set it smaller, at some %

I don't know if there is a way to set this. Some user's may prefer different sizes of window, depending on their job duties. For example, we have 170 Systems document management integrated with purchasing and payables so users shrink the Oracle window to fill about 60% of the screen while 170 uses the remaining 40% to display the scanned document.

'''IT'S A EASY AS IT SHOULD BE.'''
This is essentially paulbruster's answer, but I've added the steps some might assume, but which aren't so obvious to those of us who are new at this, like me.
This solution might ''appear'' to be long and complicated, but after you follow the directions once, you'll find it's quick, clean, and simple. Almost like they designed it this way.
    # If you haven't already, open a bunch of tabs on a few different subjects.
    # Click the List All Tabs button on the right side of the tab strip.
    # Select Tab Groups.
    # Create a few groups as described [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/what-are-tab-groups#w_how-do-i-create-a-tab-group here] , i.e. just drag them out of the main thumbnail group into the new groups they create.
    # Now click on any thumbnail in any new group, but not the original big default group you may have left some tabs in.
#A regular Firefox window will open, but'' only the tabs in that group will be visible.'' You also now have the Tab Groups button in the tab strip.
    # Right click on any tab, and there it is: Bookmark All Tabs. Click on it in the list of options. Or you can hit Ctrl+Shift+D instead and go straight to the dialogue box from the tab without any clicks. But don't go looking for this familiar option anywhere else, 'cause it's not there.
    # Now pick an existing folder or create a new one just like you would have before and '''shlpam!''' there they are. New folders are supposed to end up in the Unsorted category all the way at the very bottom, but for some reason mine show up at the bottom of my last sorted category.
    # DO NOT CLICK THE UPPER-RIGHTMOST X to close this group of tabs. This will close ALL of your tabs in all groups, currently visible or not. At least it asks if you're sure first. Instead, click your new Tab Groups button to return to the Boxes 'O Thumbnails window, and click the X in the group box you just bookmarked.
    # Click on another thumbnail to repeat the process with another group, or click on a thumbnail in the big default box to return to the original FF window. You can also click the Tab Groups button at the upper right, or Ctrl+Shift+E, which will also get you ''into'' the Boxes 'O Nails window ''from'' FF.
    # So now when you reopen FF after shutdown, simply select your folder from your Bookmarks and Open All in Tabs. '''Just like paulbruster said. '''

My iphone died, won't take a charge anymore and only displays the empty battery symbol.

I left it on the charger for hours but to no effect. As it was on its way out it would not even plug into my car radio to play itunes.

I don't like the idea of handing it over to the tech guys at my company and who knows where it ends up after that.

  • HT201364 How do you free up startup disk space on mac book pro 2013 model its not letting me update anything at all

how do you free up disk space on macbook pro 2013 model to upgrade and update software

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How do you switch startup disks ?

How do you switch hard disks, one is full, the other is blank ?

If I understand your question correctly, there is really no need to switch startup disk.
You can just move the larger files, say music or photos from the system disk over to the disk drive that is blank now. OS X will then work with both disk drive at the same time. It will get the system and application data from the system disk drive and the music or photo data from the disk drive that is currently blank.
The only thing you will have to do is tell the application where you moved the data files to so that it can find them when it needs them.

  • HT4060 tried everything and can't get my ipad to charge...how do you reset it if battery is complety dead?

tried everything and can't get my ipad to charge.  How do you reset IPad when battery is completly dead?  charger and cable works fine on IPhone.

First make sure you are using the charger that came with your iPad and plug that into a known good wall outlet. Let your iPad remain on the charger for at least an hour. It may take that long before it responds if the battery is completely dead. If using the charger that came with your iPad there are several reasons it may fail to charge.
Bad outlet. Make sure the Utsler has power.
Bad charger. Try a different charger.
Bad cable. Try a different cable.
Dirt in the connector. Check and clean if necessary.
Hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • How do you free space on the startup disk

how do you free space on the startup disk

If your disk is 80% full that is normal.  Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots.  To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup.
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files.  You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again.  More headroom is better.  If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
    - Empty the trash.
    - Start iPhoto, empty its trash and restart the computer.
    Deleting files:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second one onto which you will offload some files.
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
    Moving files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.
As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • How do you get Workforce 840 to print two-sided

I can't figure out how to get my new Epson Workforce 840 to print two-sided (iMac running Mac OS 10.7.2).  From MS Word the two-sided option (in Layout) is grayed out.  In Mail and other Apple applications the Preset for two-sided printing is off and I can't figure out how to turn it on.  The two-sided print function works as expected when I print from Windows 7 software (Bootcamp) or if I use the LCD controls on the printer to have copies printed two-sided.  Probably something obvious, but I'm a newbie to the Mac world, would appreciate some help.  Thanks.

I am not sure if it is still valid for OS X 10.7, but check the User Guide.  Go to Output Settings
