How do you tell whether you have Snow Leopard?

I'm thinking about getting the OS Lion Update, but can't find "Snow Leopard" in my computer. How do you tell?  Thanks

from the  menu, choose about this Mac. you'll see this:
everything saying 10.6.x is Snow Leopard.

How can I tell where the OS (Snow Leopard) is? I’m not sure if it is on the SSD or the regular HD. I just had a rough weekend trying to back things up with Time Machine and I think the OS was copied to the regular HD, or could be in two places? How do I find where the OS is? If it is on the regular drive I want to put it on the SSD.
    Thank you very much!

Some recent systems don't observe that convention - not sure at the moment about Snow Leopard but I have a feeling it doesn't.
Copy the following into the AppleScript Editor (in Applications/Utilities)
set dsk to the path to startup disk as string
    display dialog dsk
    click the 'run' button.

  • How can I know if I have Snow Leopard on my mac?

How can I find out if I have Snow Leopard on my mac?

Click on the black apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen
Drag the cursor down to 'About this Mac' and click it
That should bring up a pane that has information about your Mac
If under Mac OS X, you see version 10.6.x, where x = 0 through 8, then you are running Snow Leopard
Why do you need to know?

Although you have accepted the negative answer as solving your problem, there is a positive one:

  • How do you install Snow Leopard on a Raid 0

    Hey guys
I have a MBpro 13" 2011 with Lion currently installed (the MBpro was shipped with snow leopard)
I bought 2 SSD's and I'm trying to make a fresh install on the MBpro. No backup, time machine, images, or anything like that.
    Questions:
can I install it from an external hard drive? or do I need an external DVD player?
how do I configure the empty drives in RAID 0 before starting the installation
    thanks

how do I configure the empty drives in RAID 0 before starting the installation
The support for creating RAID 0 Striped or RAID 1 Mirrored is included in Disk Utility. Disk Utility is available on the Installer/Utilities DVD (or its equivalent if copied to and then booted from an external drive). normally, you would Boot from the Installer/Utilities DVD, but do not install. Answer only the "what Language" question, and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After you have created a striped RAID from two SSDs, they will show up as one Volume, onto which the Installer can Install.

  • How do you reinsatll snow leopard from an external optical drive

Both my hard drive and superdrive crapped out. How do i reinstall from an external USB optical drive?  I am having a complete brain **** at the moment!

If your replacing your internal hard drive, why not also get the Superdrive replaced?
The OS X install disk supposedly won't boot from a external optical drive, only the internal one.
To OS X onto your new internal drive, your going to need another Mac with optical drive to take 10.6 off the disk and place it onto a bootable USB. Any Mac should do, as the 10.6 installer isn't going to be booted .
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
Other methods, requires another compatible Mac.
If you have machine specific 10.6 disks and you have another exact model of Mac, you can use a SATA to USB adapter (or enclosure) to use boot the second Mac with the disk and install 10.6 on the "extenral" drive, then place it back inside the other Mac.
If you have the 10.6.3 white retail so called "upgrade disk" for 10.5 (it also has the full 10.6 on it) and you have another Intel Mac that it's OS X version originally came with anything 10.6.2 or earlier, then it will boot that disk to install on the "external" drive, then it can be placed back into the other Mac.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Another internal drive access method is to use Firewire Target Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Also one can use a external drive to install the compatible OS X version onto, then option key boot the Mac with the new drive off the external, install Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the extenral to the newly formatted internal drive.

  • How do i know if I have snow leopard or mountain lion OS?

Trying to do a transfer of purchase from my iPhone into iTunes and I don't have the correct software. How do i knowwhat I have?

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • Lion upgrades. Will it be available on disk? 4Gig will eat into my data, and do I have to download three times for my three macs? Can you only get server if you have snow leopard server already or can snow leopard be upgraded to server at the same price?

    ?

What about cloned backup drives?  Can those drives be moved to another machine?  Filemaker 1 in 1984 through Filemaker Pro 8.5 allowed you to run the software off an external drive.  With Filemaker 9 they moved to a file scheme that required calling in and uninstalling from one cpu and installing to a new cpu.  That would have been fine if Filemaker would answer their phones.  It was a horrible experience, something Mac users would not tolerate back in the eighties.
With the Apple Store, you could avoid calling in but their system has to be online for you to make your transition.  Because Apple sells hardware, they should continue to build some costs into the hardware and continue ease of use.  Microsoft can't do that.  That is why I do not use Microsoft products except Office.
    Steve,
If your three macs are similar, installing to an external firewire drive may or may not still work as a boot device.  It has been nice to be able to boot from a backup drive instead of just recover files from a backup.

  • If you have snow leopard, is the lion update free?

I have a 1 year old Macbook Pro and i'm up to date with all my software. But i want Lion. Is it like another software update that newer mac users get for free, or does everyone have to pay for it? A friend told me that i didn't need to pay, but i want to make sure.

    $29.99
I am sure this is what your friend is refering to,

however it does not sound like your case.

  • HT5502 I have snow leopard 10.7.5  Do I need to download this upgrade of safari

I have snow leopard 10.5.2  Do I need to upgrade safari since I updated my itunes10?

I think  you have a confusion of versions here. You say you have Snow Leopard 10.7.5 in your topic title. 10.7.5 is a version of Lion, not Snow Leopard. Then in the message you say Snow Leopard 10.5.2 (there is no such version of Snow Leopard.) Then you want to know about upgrading Safari because you updated iTunes, yet these are unrelated.
I can tell you that if you have Snow Leopard 10.7.5 then you have the latest version of Safari for that version of OS X. The current version of iTunes is 10.7 (not to be confused with versions of Lion.) Snow Leopard is 10.6.x.

  • How can i install mac os x snow leopard on Lion?

You cannot. Either you erase the drive on which you installed Lion then reinstall Snow Leopard or you create another partition on the drive and install Snow Leopard on that partition so you can dual boot.
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • How do you have multiple apple id's with one itunes

how do you have multiple apple id's with one itunes

I have multiple IDs and use the single computer sharing itunes. By 'sharing' I mean we open the pc, open itunes and log in with our individual ID as required.
While Im logged in I plug in  my device. I transfer my purchases from my device as per the file menu (not the check for auto downloads). I move them as required to whichever playlist I like.
Then when my son wants to use itunes or update his device, he logs in, plugs in his device, transfers purchases from his device, puts whatever music he wants into his playlist and/or drags direct to the device regardless of who purchased it and then syncs.
Im not sure how it works associating the pc with only one ID or all that other business- I know I don't fiddle with any of that.

  • I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard?

    Hello,
I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard? I tried to do it by my original CDs but macbook  pro didn't let me to do it.
    Thanks

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

  • How do you have more than 1 ipod in your family and only 1 computer to be able to each have a separate account?

HOw do you have more than 1 ipod int he family and be able to have your own itunes on 1 computer?

Did you read the support document at the other end of the link? What additional information do you desire?
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer (n.b. same link as above!) suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.
