How Do You Transpose Audio?

I've never run up against a situation where I needed to do this, but now I have.
What's the best way to transpose audio in Logic 9? I have stereo mix that's in the wrong key for someone and they asked me if I could change it....like a dummy I said..."Uh...yeah..I think so.."
Help...;)
Thanks

I bought and installed Pitch 'n Time LE for Logic by Serato. In Logic you can then set the preference to use this for all pitch transposition (instead of Logic's built-in algorithms, which all stink for the most part). This is something I use almost every day, wouldn't be without it. I also use Melodyne as a plug-in in Logic for monophonic instruments. It will also handle stereo mix polyphonic material too, but not as well as P&T, in my experience.

The audio inputs on Macs are line level inputs and not mic inputs.  You need a mic with a built in preamp (battery powered) or more conveniently a USB mic or bluetooth headset.

  • How do you monitor audio?

I have a few questions about monitoring audio in my fcp/stp projects.
Currently, I have a g5 quad that has an optical toslink output, that I use to connect to the optical in on a good denon home theater receiver (avr 3801). This is how i output my mac's audio. I have two B&W bookshelf speakers as my monitor speakers.
Is this acceptable to use to monitor my sound for my editing projects? I am not doing much music work, mostly just voice track cleanup on my video projects.
How do you connect audio equipment in your setup to monitor audio?
I am thinking of buying an Alesis 12 track multimix firewire mixer, is this a better interface to use and do I route the signal from the multimix to the receiver to get to the speakers, or should I just get powered monitor speakers and connect them to the mixer?
Also, when editing audio, which is mostly dialogue, is there a volume setting I should keep my receiver at and just work the levels in stp to get the volume right? My receiver has a volume level from -60Db to 0 to 18Db. I am worried about setting my project audio to high or too low.

Giving advice such as saying <Your B & W speakers might be good enough for the job, their lineage is as a studio monitor for the BBC. If you paid over $500/pr, and they sound good, then they're probably good enough. You can use them with a mixer hooked-up to your Mac and outputted to the Denon like in your current set-up> is so cool, if that was the case would,nt you think for a quick minute they would be recomended by pro or advertise as nearfield monitor and not hi-fi.
<conveinient to buy active monitors.> that ain't the case active monitors are made for monitor audio interms of listening to frequency that would be imposible to hear on hi-fi speakers which is the opposite of hi-fi which is more colour-full and does'nt give the true sound, also because its self-power and easy to plug and play.
<The playback volume you use is relative. Most of the engineers I've worked with over the past 30 years prefer to listen back at higher volumes> most pro enginineer listen to mix at very low D.B so as to know exactly what there getting, and after crank them up to hear the over-all levels, any engineer that linsten at loud D.B. does that to show off in seeking attention fr. clients making them feel as if the mix or the song is all that, take it outside the studio and its a different story! <listen back at higher volumes than I'm comfortable with,> thats what i have just explain.
<As far as the levels within the track are concerned, that is all done in the software, again per your preferences, and with an eye on the meters.> it would be nice of you to explain what meter are you talking about, and if it was all so easy with eyes on the meter, dont you think every mixing engineer or anyone attempting to mix would all were glasses, meter in sofware aren't the same as the meters in a pro studio, nor is it the same in hardware, also not all meters are the same where as mixing is concern, they are special meters prefreable know as V.U. meters, check below and you'll all get a better understanding of what i have just out-line, before giving wrong advice of monitor audio.

PrPro may have that but I've always just gone over to Audition ... you change speed there, you're given a choice of keeping the pitch the same or allow it to change. Note ... if there's much cha ge in speed the result can be odd.

NO. If you let DVDSP make your encoding you'll get uncompressed audio (AIFF/PCM) what means most probably high bitrate issues during building/playback and a lot of the space of your disc.

  • How do you combine audio and video files?

I've brought in a video file and an audio file, but can find no way to specify that they are a single source that should be compressed together.  The documentation was of no use.  How do you identify video and audio files as being one source?
    Thanks!

Semantics, I suppose.  In any case, you do need to go through Premiere Pro if you want AME to do the job.  There are likely other encoders out there which can perform the muxing, though, if you'd rather not go through PP.

  • How do you mixdown audio?

After renedring. How do you mixdown the audio? Please help. Some of my video/audio, depending upon where I upload it to on the net, sounds tinty or slushy. I have tried almost every audio setting to correct this. I have never "mixed down", what is that and how do I do that?
    I'm using FCE
    Thank you so much!!!

First of all, make sure all of your audio is properly rendered
Secondly, mixing down the audio is something you should always do before exporting; not sure it will necessarily help your issue but:
Make everything in your timeline is selected (Edit>Select All)
    Then: Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown
You say your audio is poor when you "upload" it on the net? How is it in your timeline? Sound OK there? Maybe your problem has more to do with your export settings for the web. Play around with those settings as well

  • How do you lock audio regions?

    Hi,
I am looking for a way to lock my audio regions so that their length cannot be modified. Lock SMPTE position does not accomplish this...
    Is there a way?
    -patrick

    Greetings IA,
Sorry but I don't know of a way of doing that. There's no keyboard shortcut, no Edit command and no combination click. You might be able to help yourself by using the local menu Edit > Select Used to identify those bits of audio in your arrange window or you can:
    Go to the arrange window
    Edit > Select All
    Return to the Audio Window
View > Group files by > Selection in Arrange
That gives you an Audio Window view with all your used files bundled together so you can lock the individual clips. Sorry I can't help any more than that.
Looks like an omission to me and you could always pass it to Apple as an enhancement request.

  • How do you transpose an audio track

I was wondering if anyone knew how to transpose an audio track other than using the pitch shifter plug in. I want to take a track down 1 or 2 semitones. The pitch shifter works but wanted to physically change the track.
    Thanks

I guess that seems easy enough. What I am trying to transpose is an imported track, and the transpose option does not appear in the inspector. I did not realize that before. However, the time and pitch machine did do what i wanted it to do. I just had to figure out how many cents it took to make a semitone. It is 100 by the way. There were a lot of options on there which made me avoid it at first, so i was looking for something easier. But I guess for an imported track, that is the way to go. For things I have recorded on logic, the inspector is the way to go.
    Thanks for the help

You don't. Use QT 7 Pro or GarageBand instead. (Video editors will also merge multiple audio tracks but they are likely more limited than QT 7 Pro which allows up to 99 data tracks.) GarageBand, also based on older QT 7 Pro technology, allows you to segment tracks, set track or selected track segment volumes to duck track or track segments, adjust or "rubberband" master track volumes, adjust stereo pan for track or selected track segments as well as, "slide" tracks or track segments along the time axis and apply numerous enhancements beyond my ability to even remember here.
