HOW do you unpartition a drive?!

here's the situation; I got a new 500 gig hard drive installed in the eMac I got from my music teacher. BUT the computer center partitioned it into a 40 gig drive and a 460. What I wanted was a single larger hard drive. I was told that, if I started up from my Tiger DVD, chose "options" and erased the original disk, I would get rid of the partition. Not so. I did it and it didn't work.
What I'm doing instead is reinstalling OS X on the larger partition and making that one my boot drive. Will this work? I can keep the smaller partition as a fail-safe, I guess? But how do you get rid of a partition? What did I do wrong? For that matter, how do you add a partition if you should want an extra one? TIA!

"Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then chose MacOS Extended Journalled. Not the indented Partition.
6. Click Erase & look for Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

    dave0915,
iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes

  • How do you install a driver onto a current system from a live cd?

I just installed Arch on my laptop, but it seems that it doesn't install the Ethernet drivers and they don't appear to be on the live CD.  How might I install the drivers?
    Thanks!

your post title and the message within seem to contradict themselves.
More information from you might be helpful as in  what packages did you install during the installation process? Did you have network connection during the install? Are there any errors that you get when booting.

  • MacBook Pro2012 : How can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

My MacBook Pro (2012) hard drive is almost full, Apple refuses to provide hard drive upgrade service, how can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

    Dear Ralph, and All
    My MBP is indeed non-retina.
I also have Apple care support for 3 years
I was in touch with Apple suport since last week. Response I got on Phone was pretty astounding (waiting email confirmation). They say following
    - Apple support does not provide such service of upgrading hard drive
    - Doing it yourself means you will lose warranty (due to nature of operation one would need to perform on the computer)
    - None of authorised delars will provide such a service
So as such there apparantly is no way to get your hard drive upgraded without losing warranty.
    Leaves me a bit perplexed
I do understand MBP retina (or iPAD / iPhones) are manufactured in way that makes it technically impossible to upgrade certain parts. But why non-retina MBP?
What do you all think? is this reasonable? is this what a MBP customer would expect?
Really appreaciate the quick responses i have recieved from you and others on this forum.
    Many thanks

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.

  • How do you tell what driver your macbook is?

im trying to hook my macbook pro up to my roomates computer, but i have to know what driver it is, how do i find out?

  • How do you UNINSTALL a driver

I made a mistake and loaded a wrong driver for my motherboard off the MSI website. My Board is a   KT4AV-L
How can I uninstall the driver? Where is it, etc? Windows XP Home Edition.

    Which driver is it?
Sound driver you should see in Add/Remove Programs.
4in1 drivers have their own uninstall, as well as some other drivers. Run the install program once again and you will get the option to remove.
It might be hard when it is hard ware drivers, if the driver doesn't have an uninstall, to get rid of all files, but you could sort of "downdate" the device with the correct or old driver if you still have it.

  • How do you format a drive which doesn't show in finder

I have two Western Digital external hard drives which I have used on my iMac before. I am trying to use them for the first time  since the Lion update and when I plug them in they light up but are not recognized by the computer. Is there a fix for this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Marcia

    Finder > Preferences > General
This will force the system to look for them if they ever decide not to show up in Finder.
But you need to use Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), which always sees any device attached, even if the format is incorrect.  This will format the device as GUID wth ExtendedJournaled partitions.

  • How do you undo a drive partition

When I installed my new hard drive, I partitioned it because I intended to run windows. Now that I've installed Fusion, I realize that I can't use that partition I set aside! Any easy way to delete the partition? Thanks in advance.

    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, not the indented Partitions.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Erase Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, after completion you'll be able to install.

  • How do you resize Hard Drive Using Disk Utility?

so I wanted to do a fresh reset of my computer so I created a new partition and installed mavericks on it. I backed up all my files and then deleted my old HD partion. Now I am left with "free space" and It wont let me make my Mavricks side bigger. Any one Know how to fix this?

Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the newly made first or top volume. Source means the old second or lower volume.
Alternatively, you can use the latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4 to clone your bottom volume to the top volume.

  • How Do You Install The Driver For A USB-GPIB-HS?

I have a USB-GPIB-HS module.  I'm trying to install it on a Dell Latitude E6510 laptop running Windows 7.  I have LabVIEW 2011 installed on that computer along with the version of NI488.2 and NI MAX that came with LabVIEW 2011.  During the process of debugging I've upgraded NI488.2 to the latest version from the NI website, v14.
The USB-GPIB-HS shows up in the Device manager in the Control Panel.  It has a yellow exclamation mark (a "bang") next to in.  It says that the device driver isn't working "This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)".  If I "Troubleshoot" the device from the menu there it tries to download a newer driver, but it can't find one.  The driver version is 14.0.0.49152.  If I try to upgrade the driver in Device Manager it says that it's up-to-date.
In NI MAX the device shows up, but can't be used.  It's name and serial number are given but the normal controls to use it don't appear.
I've heard that tinkering with the "GPIB Enumeration Service" can help, but I can't find where that service is.

The problem was that the USB-GPIB-HS modules I tried was physically broken. I tried another and everything worked.

  • How do you insert thumb drive for lion?

I have a Mac Desktop -- I just purchased the thumb drive for Lion -- I am lost as to where I am supposed to insert it -- do i need a special flash usb drive etc.?

    Hello, Rudy.
I'd suggest examining the sides of your MBP's case - mine has a USB port on each side, but it dates from 2005 or so.  (I just looked, and it appears currently manufactured MBPs still have two USB ports, but they're both on one side of the case.
    Good luck
