How do you update the 2nd generation ipod touch to get IOS 4.3?

My niece sold me her second generation ipod touch so I could give it to my five-year old for christmas. I was so excited to give it to him, until I tried to start loading apps.  It kept saying that I needed IOS 4.3.  How do I get that on this ipod?  This was going to be his BIG gift because obviously I don't want to buy a five-year old a brand new ipod touch.  I will be so upset and disappointed if I can't use this...

Sorry, the 2nd generation iPod Touch can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?

I must voice my total dissatisfaction here.
My iPod touch 2nd gen is less than 3 years old - it can't run the latest iOS, My G5 tower at home can't run the latest OS. I am a .mac user (I have been since it started) but I can't migrate to iCloud and the .mac service is being deprecated. Everything is considered too old to update.
Well - I can update in fact - if I buy a new Mac and a new iPod. This means essentially throwing away my old Apple hardware (again - I have 8 old Macs in the basement). I'm pretty sick of finding myself in this situation. I run both Macs and PCs - one of my development PCs here is still running WIndows 98 very well!
So what I am likely to do is cancel all my Apple services and mothball all my Apple products, as I can't really afford the luxury of upgrading all my hardware (over £2500) just so my calendars and contacts will sync across my devices. I'm likely to migrate to Windows to do this. Painful.
Shameful behaviour from Apple in this age of concern over excess consumption and excess waste production. You've lost (another) long-term Apple devotee and evangelist.

  • Does Apple plan to discontinue support/update for 2nd Generation iPod touch as latest iOS release for it is 4.2.1?

I have 2nd Generation iPod touch and latest iOS release for it is 4.2.1. Most of the Apps on iTunes now require iOS 4.3 at minimum. Isn't it outrageous that Apple is not supporting such iOS update for older iPod? Is there plan to discontinue such support?

I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch too and I currently have 24 Apps that I cannot update. Unlike you however, I hold the App developers responsible for the fact that they (the App developers) are not supporting iOS 4.2.1.
It is the App devloper who decides to modify their App so that it then requires a particular version of the iOS. Since a developer can have a free and a paid version of an App, it begs the question why don't they have the older and newer versions.
I now check the requirements for an App before I click on update. If it still only requires iOS 4.2.1, then I can update. If it requires a higher iOS, the I simply don't update it. One good thing is that by now, most of the older Apps are quite stable and bug free, so the update is usually to give something extra. Since I cannot update the App, I simply forgo the "extras".

  • How do you use the 2nd gen ipod touch as a hard drive?

I restored it and renamed it because my sister gave it to me, and now I restored it to use it as my own, and it works fine and all, occasionally saying it can't sync some applications and movies because it can't find the file or something, and I've tried removing all my music (which is like, 5.5 GB total) and it still has those same errors. The other thing I have a problem with, as the subject implies, how do I use it as a hard drive? I've seen the tutorials on apple, but I don't see the "enable disk use" on itunes in the XXXXX's ipod summary tab.

The iPod touch doesn't have the "enable disk use" option of other iPods.
A program called AirSharing will let you mount the iPod touch as a wireless drive

The current version of iOS I have as of now is 4.2.1.  I was wondering if this was possible, if so, please let me know how so I can update it.

No. A 2G can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

  • How to update for 2nd generation ipod touch?

I have a 1st or 2nd generation ipod touch, was bought in early 2008 i believe.
I can't for the life of me find anything that will let me download the newest update for the software. I've seen other
people have said they have downloaded the 4.3 but I just can't. Is my itunes not up to date? or is it just not
    possible??

4.2.1 is the latest software available for the second gen ipod touch.
3.1. is the latest from a 1st gen.

  • Update. 2ND generation ipod touch.

Can i update a 2nd generation ipod to IOS5 ? I know that below "about" in "general" there is suppost to be a  thing that says update but my ipod doesn't have that. And, when i go to itunes it doesn't let me update it. Help !! Please !

I hope I didn't find you too late, Krrishlnd or anyone else interested, but when I inadvertently updated some apps beyond my 2nd generation iPod's iOS 4.2.1 capability, since I also have a new 3rd generation iPad, and my iTunes dutifully tries to update those apps beyond my iPod's capabilities--or if an app's "improvements" are worse than the previous version, I go to the trash on my Mac's desktop and open it.  Yes, my iTunes normally catches the apps in question, and will state that the app is incompatible with my Touch, but occasionally an app slips through.   In your Trash, unless you empty it regularly, you'll find iTunes' discarded previous versions of your apps.  In fact you may find several earlier versions of the same apps in question, if it has been an unusually long time since you've emptied your trash.  Newer Mac OS 10.X doesn't routinely empty the Trash like OS 9 and earlier used to do on shutdown and restart, so there's hope here.  The discarded apps have abbreviated names you'll probably recognize, all with .ipa extensions at the end.  They aren't overwritten when iTunes updates your iOS devices; iTunes just removes them and places them intact in the Trash.
What I do is make up a new folder (call it something like "iOS apps recovered from Trash" or whatever you like), either on my desktop or on an external harddrive, and select pretty much every app in my Trash (look for the extension .ipa) and haul them out of the trash to the new folder.  From there (you can't open or use files directly from in Trash--your computer will just let you know you can't do it), just double-click on the older version of the app you want to reinstall on your 2nd generation iPod Touch.  Your iTunes will ask if you want to replace the newer version with the older one.  Click OK and then plug in your iPod Touch and let iTunes update it.  I've restored apps back to working versions when app authors have mistakenly released newer versions too buggy or incompatible (despite being advertised otherwise) with my iPod Touch on several occasions using this method.  If you create the folder on your desktop, the selected Trash's contents empty into it.  If on an external harddrive, the originals remain in the trash--you may empty the Trash now that you've made the back-up folder.
If you have previously discarded the Trash contents, your only option now is to search on the Internet for archived copies of the apps in question.  Just make sure your antivirus software is up to date, since one never knows where these apps have been...
I hope this helps.  This method has spared me many headaches over the past couple of years.  Hope your kid, in the mean time, hasn't yelled at you so loudly you have had to take away his/her iPod for bad attitude.  Good luck.

  • Do you think the next generation iPod Touch should have GPS?

  • HT1353 I have the 2nd generation IPOD touch.  I have always been able to use apps such as Facebook and Pinterest.  However now it says I must have IOS 4.3 update requirement bit when I check for updates on ITunes when hooked up to computer says updates co

My IPod touch 2nd generation always was fine with apps such as Facebook and Pinterest but now they say it needs updates IOS 4.3 but when hooked up says updates are complete and now I can't use some apps like Facebook.

To my knowledge the second gen iPod touch cannot update past 4.2.1.  App developers are probably requiring newer versions of iOS for their newest apps.  Sorry, but your device is becoming incompatible.

  • How can i update the 4.1 iPod touch to the most allowable version of 6.1? I have only been able to go to 4.2

I would like to transfer the apps and music from my computer to a new iPod touch that was previously owned by my brother. My previous iPod is lost or stolen. I also need to update it to 6.1, the highest allowable upgrade, which allows at least some of the older versions of some apps to work (such as Facebook, youtube). I have only figured out how to update it to 4.2. They say I can't have help over the phone unless I pay $29, although they have helped me in the past in a similar situation. Thanks. John

Upgrading it depends on what model it is:
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • How do you update Apple ID on Ipod Touch

I recently updated my apple ID due to a change in email providers.  I can access my Apple account, download, synch music etc...but I CANNOT update my Ipod Touch Apps.  It says there are 11 updates but when I select the App Store it shows my Applie ID with the old address, so of course I cannot log in....how do you change the ID to allow you to sync the updates?????

To change or update your Apple ID on the iPod Touch, follow these instructions:
    Enter Settings.
    Select Store.
    Select Sign Out.
    Enter updated Apple ID.

  • Will Apple someday make iOS5 available to the 2nd generation iPod Touch?

I know that iOS5 will only be available to 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touches. Is it possible that Apple can develop a slightly down-graded version that has some of the new features so that users with 1st and 2nd generations can enjoy them?

I believe the "slightly down-graded" version of iOS 5 would be iOS 3 or iOS 4.

  • Is there a reason why you cannot update further than a 4.2.1 on the 2nd generation ipod touch?

I have an iPod touch that is 2nd Generation. I have seen that you cannot update past a 4.2.1. I want to know why. Why can you not update further?
I feel many Apple users get very disappointed in the way the system works. They pay so much for the products and it only gets them so far. it is ridiculous.
I will NOT proceed to buy Apple products if I am going to continue to be disappointed when promised so much.

I understand where you're coming from. It's really frustrating, because without the latest iOS version its hard to get practically every app because Apple says that the iPod's version is incompatible or that we don't have the newest version. It hard because I feel like I'm not getting the most out of my iPod. But maybe Apple will be able to fix things later on down the road.
