how do you use multiple outputs on a VSTi like Kontakt or Battery with Logic Pro 7.1? I've heard someting about using AUX busses, but can anyone please provide an actual clear, step by step basic guide?
I've had Logic 3 months now and just don't know how to do this yet, and have yet to actually find it in the manual!!

Both computers have ports for external monitors. Check your user manuals. Only one display can be added to the MBP, but newer iMacs have dual Thunderbolt ports.
Do your own Google research to learn what to do, but reading your manuals should be all you really need. It' not rocket science yet.

How do you use multiple desktops?

Virtual desktops, workspaces, whatever you or your DE/WM calls them.
I'm wondering how people actually use them. I haven't really figured out a best way to take advantage of them. I tend to just use Desktop 1 and occasionally switch over to Desktop 2 if I need to run something with a large window.
Do you sort applications into different desktops according to type? or purpose? Do you use each desktop for a different project? Is it a de facto sorting, just whatever you happen to be doing at the moment, or are your desktops configured and named according to a specific layout you always use?

I don't use virtual desktops anymore, since KDE 4.x introduced "activities" - a far superior concept for sorting windows and desktop applets belonging to a specific task.
The basic idea is similar to that of virtual desktops:
You can associate windows with an arbitrary tag (basically just a name + optionally an icon) called an "activity", i.e. 'Music' or 'Work' or whatever you want, and then when you switch between the "activities" you created, it always only shows those windows belonging to the current "activity".
However, it goes far beyond that:
A window can't just be either visible on one specific "activity", or visible on all (as is the case with virtual desktops) - but instead, it can be visible (or rather: be part of) any number of specific "activities".
You can not only switch between "activities" (causing all windows not belonging to the current "activity" to be hidden, but still running in the background and therefore consuming CPU and memory), but you can also actually stop an "activity", causing it's windows (and therefore the associated applications) to actually quit. Then whenever you want, you can restart the "activity", and it will bring you back all the applications & windows exactly the way they were when you stopped the "activity".
(Ok, granted, the "exactly the way they were" part only works with applications that know how to properly restore their state, which is true for all KDE SC applications but not true for many non-KDE apps such as Inkscape or Gimp.)
"Activities" don't only track windows, but also contextual information pertaining to the user's current task. I don't think this feature is made use of very much in the current KDE release, but the KDE developers are already implementing lot's of useful per-activity-contextual-information-tracking stuff for the next release (or the one after that), including (I think):
separate (or at least optimized) "recent files" lists per "activity" (everywhere were "recent files" lists appear in KDE)
different sorting of KRunner search results per "activity", to prioritize result items that were most often used or are most relevant within the current activity.
All of this works together flawlessly with KDE's session management, so when you log out of KDE and back in again (or even restart your computer), all your activities, including their state (running or stopped) and their associated windows etc. are left intact.
So all in all, you can create one KDE "activity" for each general activity (i.e. "Music", etc.) or specific project (e.g. "bachelor thesis") you use your computer for, and it will make your life a lot easier...
(Note: KDE additionally still keeps its old-fashioned "virtual desktop" functionality around, since some power-user like to use both concepts orthogonally (i.e. two-dimensional grouping), but I personally think that's a little too crazy ;-) and as mentioned above, I've personally never needed virtual desktops anymore since I started to use "activities".)

I'm working on a large program that currently uses Object Input/Output streams for all of the messaging in a client/server application. This works fine except when files need to be transferred. In many cases using a Object stream to send a file can be 30 times slower than using a Buffered input/output stream. I've found I can combined the two. Here are some code snippets to give you a basic idea of what's happening...

Obviously there is a lot missing here. Basically the variable whichKindOfStreamUsedNext is changed in the methods doSomethingWithObject( ) and readFromBuffer depending on what the current state of the server is and what is passed to these methods from the client.
Here is the problem. If readFromBuffer( ) does a very small task and the client sends an object through an object stream everything is okay. I've switched whichKindOfStreamUsedNext = OBJECT_STREAM before that point and by the time the client sends the object the server is waiting on Object object = ois.readObject( );. However if the method readFromBuffer( ) does a very time intensive task and it takes a while to return and meanwhile the client sends an object then the server never gets that object. Does anyone have an easy solution to this problem. (Changing the whole program to just using BufferedStreams is not a solution).

I guess I didn't realize I could do that.
I changed how I am doing the program anyways. Sending flags to switch streams was a little messy. but now I have a new problem. I've discovered that mixing object streams with buffered streams also leads to significant speed increases. I do that in this manner...

and I do the same thing for the ObjectOutputStream. It works very well when I just set up the client's output stream and the servers input stream in this manner. Upload times are increased from 60 seconds to 2-5 seconds.
Unfortunately when I try to do the same thing with the servers output stream and the clients input stream to speed up downloads I get deadlock! As soon as the socket connection is opened and I try to set up the streams in this manner I get deadlock. Does anyone have any idea why this occurs and what I can do to fix it?

How do you use multiple apple id's with messages beta?

With the wife and myself each having our own apple Id's for imessage because of multiple iphones/ipads, how do we make messages beta on the mac work for us? I tried logging in as me when I installed it and it works just fine with me messaging her and her back to me but how do I log out from me and log in as her if she were the one sitting at the mac? I don't see anything that lets me do that.

hmm, that's a trick one! what I would do is go to Messages>preferences>accounts and then select imessages and then select account details and then sign out. Then your wife will need to sign in with her apple id.

simply adding both of your accounts to be reached at will prove to be faulty because when you reply you can only reply with the one email address. And even if you switch caller id's it probably still won't work. So I think my method would be the easiest way to do that at this time.

As Christopher says, it's a compilation. Different tracks are by different artists.
Setting the *Album Artist* field to *Various Artists* and setting *Part of a compilation* to Yes should be all that is required. Depending on your *Group compilations when browsing* setting ( I recommend On ) either should suffice but I suggest doing both.
Based on your commentary, I selected all the "O Brother" tracks, and checked the boxes for everything line that was blank in the Info and the Sort panes. Only exceptions were the album name and the disc number 1 of 1 and the artwork. I blanked and checked anything else.
That's not what I meant. When you select multiple tracks, only those values which +are already common+ to all tracks are displayed. Typically these will include Artist, though not with compilation albums, Album Artist, Album, No. of Tracks, Genre plus various sort fields. A blank value may indicate that different tracks have different values or it may be that the value is blank for all tracks. For the drop down values on the Options tab the value shown may not reflect the information in every tag. If values you expect to be common, such as Album Artist or the Album title are not displayed you can simply type these in and click OK. This will often be enough to group the album.
If you place a checkmark against the blank boxes and apply changes then you will clear those fields so you should only do this if that is the effect you want. Putting a checkmark next to an empty (representing different values) *Track No.* box, for example, will just clear the all the track numbers which is very rarely useful.
Adding then removing extra text is for a specific problem where despite all common values being identical across the tracks of the album iTunes seems to "remember" that it should see two albums. A typical example would be when an album originally listed as *Album CD1* & *Album CD2* is given disc numbers X of Y and then has the Album name changed to Album. I've seen iTunes merge all but one track into the new album, but insist on listing one remaining track separately, despite both albums having the same title. In this case I've found overtyping the album title again has no effect whereas changing it to AlbumX and then back to Album does what I was trying to achieve in the first place.
Don't forget that even properly organsied albums may still break up if you don't chose an album-friendly view. Sorting on the track name or track number columns can be useful in some circumstances but in general I revert to Album by Artist when browsing through my library.

And by using the same Apple ID you can also share purchases. If you have a different Apple ID for each iPhone then you can't share purchases.

I have multiple IDs and use the single computer sharing itunes. By 'sharing' I mean we open the pc, open itunes and log in with our individual ID as required.
While Im logged in I plug in my device. I transfer my purchases from my device as per the file menu (not the check for auto downloads). I move them as required to whichever playlist I like.
Then when my son wants to use itunes or update his device, he logs in, plugs in his device, transfers purchases from his device, puts whatever music he wants into his playlist and/or drags direct to the device regardless of who purchased it and then syncs.
Im not sure how it works associating the pc with only one ID or all that other business- I know I don't fiddle with any of that.

It depends where you want them in your presentation.
Open the Media inspector and choose a playlist. In the list of entries, mark those you want to add to Keynote (use command-click to mark multiple titles not in one block).
Then drag the marked titles either on a slide or on the small Audio field (looks like a frame) in Document inspector. When you then hover the cursor at the Audio "frame", you'll see the quick info "Multiple Files". You cannot change the order or remove one of the files, but only all of them.

Solaris 11 IPS: How do you post multiple versions of the same package?

How do you post multiple versions of the same software package on a single IPS instance(port)? Oracle was able to do it here with versions 151 and 175 of S11:

Unfortunately, based on my searches, no where in the documentation (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/technologies/ips-323421.html) does it explain to the development community how this is done. The best I can do is create pkg repo instances on different ports to host each different software version.
We are trying to deploy an IPS repository for our drivers and utilities that our customers can link to and pull updates from. We have been able to post a software package to the repository using the command:
pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 -d ./ Appv1.p5m
This posts the package on the IPS repository instance at port 1234 on the server. However, we would like to post multiple versions of the package on the server at the same URL. Why the same URL? So that our customers and end-users need only point to a single URL to pull down our software rather than having to add a new URL to the publisher list each time we have an update. We want at least 5 of the previous software versions to be available on the server. Posting each version of the application or driver on a different IPS instance on a different port will require customers to add multiple URLs to their publisher list and they also will not be able to initiate remote scans for updates.
Has anybody been able to do this? Is any documentation forthcoming?

dhduvall: Thanks for your response. Yes, one would think that as long as the version numbers are different, you should be able to accumulate multiple versions of a package in a repository. It looks like Oracle has done it in their S11 repository unfortunately, as far as I know, they have not shared the steps on how to do this. I would like to publish two versions of the same package. I.E. two different manifests with two different fmri.pkg version strings and two different binaries.
If I publish one package after another like this:
pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m
pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv2.p5m
Then only the second package shows up in the repository, as if it over-wrote the first one.
Running pkgsend with two manifest, like this:
pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m Appv2.p5m
Will cause pkgsend to combine the packages and manifests as if they were a single package... not what I am trying to do.
Both approaches are complete without errors but neither achieves what I am trying to do.

That isn't true. Different SQL databases have
different capabilities and use different syntax, That's true - every database has its own quirks and extensions. No disagreement there. But they all follow ANSI SQL for CRUD operations. Since the OP said they wanted to do INSERTs and UPDATEs in batches, I assumed that ANSI SQL was sufficient.
I'd argue that it's best to use ANSI SQL as much as possible, especially if you want your JDBC code to be portable between databases.

It's funny that you're telling me not to assume that all SQL databases are the same. You're the one who's proposing that the OP use a MySQL-specific extension.
I haven't looked at the MySQL docs to find out how the syntax you're suggesting works. What if one value set INSERT succeeds and the next one fails? Does MySQL roll back the successful INSERT? Is the unit of work under the JDBC driver's control with autoCommit?
The OP is free to follow your suggestion. I'm pointing out that there are transactions for units of work and ANSI SQL ways to accomplish the same thing.

No you do not need separate Apple ID's in order to use 3 devices with one Apple ID. I use 4 devices to Message and FaceTime and all use the same Apple ID. You do need to add additional email addresses for the other devices.
