How do you use Time Machine with more then one mac

I just bought a new external hard drive and want to back up my iMac & MacBook Pro using Time Machine. But I do not want to use my airport network.
I will keep the hard drive connected to the iMac, but want to, as needed, plug my MacBook Pro into the Hard drive to back up.
Is this possible? Do I have first partition the new backup hard drive?
Any help is appreciated... Jim

Ok... I am back again.
I decided to plug my backup drive into the USB port on the Airport extreme.
On my Macbook Pro, which I connect wirelessly, I was able to start Time Machine... Time Machine saw the backup drive and did a backup.. Yes it took a long time Anyway all is cool with that.
My iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet. On the iMac when I started Time Machine, it does not see the backup hard drive. I can see and share the hard drive... works fine. But no luck with TM seeing the hard drive on the iMac.
Questions is will Time Machine work with a computer that is connected to airport extreme by ethernet. If yes how o you set it up and what might be wrong??
I might mention that the reason I have the iMac connected with an ethernet cable and not wirelessly is because the iMac does not stay connected well to the internet and when it is connected has a very slow connection. My MacBook Pro is all the way across the house and has a great connection.
I have guessed the slow connection was because the Airport Extreme sits right next to the iMac and maybe there is some kind of interference.
Thanks.... any help is appreciated.

  • How do you use time machine with two macs?

I have an external hard drive hooked up to one of my macs. How do I get it to back up both macs?

You create the password for someone when you add them as a user under Users box in the Sharing Preferences > File Sharing. you have to click the plus sign under the users box to see this come up. you will get a mini address book looking thing, but I suggest just hitting the New Person button. you will see a dialog that asks for this new persons name AND password.
So lets say you want to share HardDisk123.
    1) First you add HardDisk123 to the Shared Folders list on the left.
    2) Then, making sure HardDisk123 is selected, you click the plus + under users on the right.
    3) In the window that opens, you click "New Person" and create a username and password.
    4) Once you OK out of that window, set that new persons permissions (Read & Write, Read only, etc), using the little up and down arrows next to their name.
Now you have shared HardDisk123, and created a new account that can access HardDisk123. That new account doesn't have access to anything else on your computer.
Enabling SMB sharing (in Options) is a global setting. Its confusing because you may see 1 or more users in the list there. But those are not really the same users we were just dealing with (although there could be overlap). The list of users that appear under SMB sharing in that options page is users that have an account on your computer. When you start up your computer, if you don't have automatic login set up, you are prompted to , well LOG IN. Thats how you can have a whole family of different users on one computer. They each log in separately and all have different desktop backgrounds, screen saver settings, etc etc. It how you keep your kids from deleting all your files. Well, if you have multiple user accounts setup (in the Accounts preference pane) then they will show up here under SMB and you can individually enable SMB sharing for all or just a few of those users. When you try to do that, it asks for a password.
So don't confuse those users, with accounts you create to give people on your network access to your folders on your computer.

  • How can I use the N8 with more then one VOIP-Accou...

    Hello,
on my older Nokia-phones (N82 and E52) there wasn't a problem to use more then 2 different VOIP-Accounts. Now I have successfully create one VOIP-Account on my N8. The target should be to create an another (different) VOIP-Account and switch to this, if it's necessary. The second VOIP-Account should be a backup-solution ;-)
    Thanks

OK, so did you try creating a second VOIP account on the N8?  What steps did you try, and what were the results?  If you post specific details, you will get better answers.

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entries and import the local content you have on that box.

  • How do you use time machine?

I just got my MBA and I was checking out all the new features of it, however, I can view them all and see them work except Time Machine.
I can turn the app on, which it to "On" but then nothing shows up in the field to choose to back up too.
How do I use this app?
    Thanks!!

So its recommended to use one external storage device per mac computer.
That's not what I said. It works and is supported to use one backup device for multiple Macs as long as they're all running Leopard and so using Time Machine (and of course you have sufficient capacity on the backup device). It's a bit iffy to use a TM backup volume for purposes other than Time Machine backups, though.
How would I format the drive for the mac? Will that happen automatically upon plugging in the external drive and firing up TM?
No. You'll need to use Disk Utility to reformat the drive.
Why do you recommend a HDD instead of a flash drive or other device for example?
Flash drives are too limited in capacity to act as a backup device for an entire system unless you keep very little on your computer. It's pretty easy to exceed the capacity of most flash drives just with photos and music, and that doesn't include backing up your operating system and applications The cost per megabyte of an external hard drive is much lower than the cost per meg of a flash drive, so for all but very small backup needs, a hard drive is usually much more cost effective.

  • How do you use Time Machine to reinstall Safari 4.05?

I have Time Machine with back ups, but don't know how to make it reinstall just Safari> I can't revert my entire hard drive back a few days. Too much work would be lost.
Help please if someone knows how to do this!! I need step by step directions!
    Thanks

    Hi
it's a little involved via TM since there are numerous folders of files within System/Library/in addition to the Safari app, which were changed by the update.
Some users here reckon that 4.0.5 works fine with the newer software 'frameworks', but to be safe, I'd want to revert those too.
See Patrick's advice in this thread about using Pacifist to make the necessary changes. If you do follow it, close all other apps whilst you do so & restart afterwards, and backup first, as you would with any update.

  • How can i use time machine with a network drive

I have a Western Digital Net N900 wireless router with a 2TB internal H/D. How can I get Time Machine to reconize it?

Relying only on TM to me is iffy but I would bet you have clones in addition to TM like I do.  I agree with everything you said but to the OP question, it is possible.  A time capsule or AEBS+HD are pretty similar but one is officially supported while the later is not.
Since I'm rambling a bit I will add this.  I only use TM for the times I delete something and then wish I had it back.  All my restores or migrations are done from my clones.  One clone is made weekly and is a snap shot of my system.  One clone I keep remotely located and is updated monthly.
    My system:
    Internal 1TB
    Ext HD1 2TB (1TB data, 1TB clone)
Ext HD2 2TB time machine backup (internal + HD1 data, not the clone)
    Remote 1TB clone
I'm fully redudant with my method and it has saved me before.

  • How do you use time capsule with an external hard drive

I would like to use time machine to back up to my external hard drive.
When I tried to set it up it said it would wipe out everthing currently on it to start using it.
I do not want it to wipe our what I have currently have on the hard drive.  Any suggestions?
I do have icloud.  Can I back up using time machine to that?

Purchase another external drive. Time Machine will only back up to a drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • How can I use Time Machine with my existing network attached storage drives

I am a new mac user switching over from windows and have an extensive amount of existing equipment including 2 network attached storage devices (Buffalo Technologies). I would like to use these with Time Machine, but can not figure out how to do it. When I enter time machine setup it does not show these drives while the Finder does.

As of right now we are all SOL unless you own a Time Capsule. At the very least I wish apple would offer some kind of trade-up if they are not going to release a software update.
It really doesn't make any sense why we can't do this with a standard AEBS. Any fix should just be a matter of software, and while technically apple covered its butt with that little "subject to change" disclaimer on the leopard preview page, pulling it at the last minute and expecting those who believed their advertisement to buy another device that does the exact same thing for more money is just wrong. Give us a break apple, tell us your at least working on a fix, its the right thing to do.

  • How do I use Time Machine with a NAS drive?

I was hoping to use a USB drive with my new Netgear router to do Time Machine backups, but I have since learned that the router only supports Windows or FAT formatted drives.
Will a NAS drive work with Time Machine?  If so, can someone give me a crash course on how to set one up and use it?
    Thanks!
For the record, I have a Netgear N300 DSL Modem/Router combo, and I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro.
Here are links to two drives I was looking at:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136745  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165198

I don't think Time Machine is supported on anything other than Time Capsule. That being said, TM works fine on my WD 2TB MyBookLive NAS. The specs on the one I bought specifically said it would work with TM. Neither one of the links you posted mentioned TM so I would be leary.

  • How do you use time machine to find files you have deleted?

I have time machine set up with a USB drive. I have spotlight set up to index my backups.
If I go into the finder and type "order confirmation" it finds the PDF file with those words in it just fine.
If I delete that file from my desktop, it fails to find it. So then I enter Time Machine while still in the middle of the search, and press the back arrow to go back in time until spotlight can find it. It correctly goes back just one hour (my last backup had that file in it since I just deleted it) but it doesn't actually display that file.
So that's a simple test case of my having no idea how to get Spotlight and Time Machine to work together.
    Am I doing it wrong?

  • Can you use time machine with 2 drives

I'd like to make two Time Machine backups - one per external drive - so that I can keep one in a different location.  Is that possible?  When I switch drives will each backup know where to pickup?

Yes, although that's not the best way to keep secondary backups.

General rule of thumb is you need a drive about 2-4 times the size of the total amount of data being backed up. See #1.
