How does Adobe make their camera  profiles for ACR and Lightroom?

I'm not interested in the proprietary algorithms , but I am curious as to the photographic mechanics and hardware tools used by  Adobe to make the various camera profiles as they differ markedly from the ones I make using the DNG Profile Editor.
My methodology is to set an X-Rite 24 patch Color Checker target, light it evenly with electromic flash (with 0.1 stops from center to corners as mesured with a Sekonic L-758r Meter) and make a series of exposures bracketed in third of a stop increments around the meter reading in case the camera sensitivity differs from the meter's.
I then process the raw files and convert them to the DNG format, select the best exposure and run it through the DNG Profile editor. My results differ from Adobe's generic profiles for that camera enough that that I don't thin kthe difference can be credited to the difference between a generic profile a specific camera.
How do the different tools work in the DNG converter? Starting with the Options for "Base Tone Curve"? Is there a document a moderately color geeky person can understand that explains this?
I thin kthe DNG Profile editor is a great and under usedtool. I wish more people knew about it.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Someone who only eats sausage may not want to know how it's made.  Someone who creates things with food, a chef, a cook, or otherwise is thinking about a career in the food industry, might have a interest in such things.  Someone who is thinking of making sausage will want to know all the details.  Someone who is concerned with the public safety might want to know how sasauge is made.
It would be nice for a sausage maker to give some hints about the process as compared to what each of us can do with the DNG Profile Editor and to the original poster's question, why are our profiles different from Adobe's?
It is my experience that when I create a profile with the DNG Profile Editor, and then compute the color error for each of the 24 color patches of a CC24, using a program like Imatest, some colors are quite a bit off and some are very close, and the colors that are off, are not the same ones that are off when I compute the color error using one of the Adobe Standard or Camera Standard profiles.
Is Adobe using more detailed and sophisticated color targets with hundreds of different colors, or if not, do the tools provide more feedback and allow more manual manipulation of the profile and so the differences are due to their judgement about which colors to make "right" and which ones to let have more error associated with them, that can be manipulated by hand instead of merely letting the DNG Profile Editor apparently distribute the error amongst the various colors with some sort of even-handed calculation.
For example it is easy to imagine that someone tweaking a profile by hand with a live readout of the error of each of the colors plus an overall composite error, might put more emphasis on skin tones being right if they have a background in people photography, or more emphasis on bright colors being right if their experience is in textiles and the current trend in the US is bright colors--and a different emphasis when the trend is muted colors so there is cultrual bias and life-experience coloring a "standard" profile.
In other words, how much of the difference between Adobe and our profiles are due to Adobe having different or better science, and how much of it is due to Adobe have different or better "artists" who decide what colors to make correct compared to others.

  • How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the Bookmarks Library?

How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the '''Bookmarks''' Library?
Since the upgrade to version 9.0.1 of Firefox, the Bookmarks feature changes are confusing me. They seem to be confusing themselves as well. The list of bookmarks has changed. The font size is so small that my aging eyes cannot read it without fogging the screen with my breath. Some folders are out of alphabetical order (where I know they were previously good), and some are missing altogether (folders to which I frequently add references).
As for missing or deranged files or folders, was there something that I should have done or now need to do to recover those after the upgrade (or before)?
    With regard to font size,
    1. there is no “Edit Bookmarks” or like option to edit the list in this version
    2. the “zoom” option in the “view” list of functions is greyed out when in “Show All Bookmarks” window
    3. expanding the browser window has no effect on font size
    4. “Preferences” settings for font size has no effect in that window either, including advanced settings
    5. “Help” offers none that I can find.
    Can any of you Help?!?

    Maybe this extension helps:

  • Loading Camera Profiles for ACR

Hello All, I downloaded the camera profiles from Labs.Adobe.com, ran the setup which looks like it put the data in the "Settings" folder under the "Camera RAW" folder.
When I go to Camera RAW and select Camera Profiles then Load, a dialog box opens looking for camera raw settings.xmp in the settings folder, however, the folder is empty.
    Where did I go wrong?
    Thanks for any help,
    Jan

First off, you need to post what version of Photoshop and Camera Raw you are using. Second, while you can indeed download the old "beta" DNG profiles, you may as well forget those and download the final shipping version which is part of the package for installing DNG Converter 5.3. Go to the DNG Product Page and download the 5.3 version-the DNG Profiles (the final release versions) are part of that install See: DNG Product Page
Then I think you are confused on how to use the profiles...when properly installed and using Camera Raw 4.6 in CS3 or at least 5.2 in CS4, the DNG Profiles will show up under the Camera Calibration panel...only when loading a raw file–there are no profiles for JPEGS. Also, the number of profiles and their names will vary by camera. You can _NOT_ load profiles into Camera Raw from within Camera Raw...if you are using the flyout menu at the side, that's the wrong way of using them.
You really need to do some reading...see the docs on Labs at the DNG PROFILES page scroll down and read the Getting Started section. If you want further help, post your system, ACR version and camera...

  • No camera profiles for D90 and D80 files in ACR 8.3?

    Hello,
I recently bought in to Adobe's Creative Cloud and downloaded the latest version of Photoshop and ACR. I love the new process and everything about the new Photoshop, however, when I went to re-edit some older images taken with a Nikon D80 and D90, there were no profiles to be found under the camera calibration tab. What gives? My only option for D90 files is "ACR 4.6" and "ACR 4.4 and 3.6" for the D80 files. Where are all the rest? What am I missing? What's strange is that they are all there in Lightroom. I hate Lightroom, though, and would prefer to continue working within ACR if possible.
Thanks a ton for any insight.

Here is what I have for D90 camera profiles in the Camera\Nikon D90 and Adobe Standard folders under ProgramData with PS-CC and ACR 8.3 installed:

I believe these profiles can also come from installing the DNG Converter 8.3, so if the profiles don't seem to exist, then try downloading and installing the DNGC 8.3 from:

  • How does iWeb make 160 movies 300 for web page?

This isn't iWeb, but rather how iWeb does this:
When I export my GB3 enhanced podcast to iWeb I get a webpage with a 300x300 pixel "movie"
But it looks like GB3 is just exporting 160x160. (is that right?) and then iWeb is doing something to change the display size.
I'm looking for the html that will let me use the GB3 160x160 image and have it display on 300x300 on a non-iWeb page I have already.

iWeb lets you adjust the size of any graphical element, including quicktime movies, to any size.

  • How does Apple make their videos so good on the website?

They have good quality, they load quickly, But what I am most curious about is the fact that I never have problems watching them full screen.
Technical specifications and tricks would help a lot. What kind of file format is used? Dimensions, encoding, etc.
I'm hoping for a simple answer.

The dimensions are what you see when you download the material. The format is h.264.
They have VERY FAST server farms to stream the stuff.
Apple is a proponent of HTML5 - we'll see where all that goes.
What do you mean by "embeding"?
I'm hoping for a simple answer.
They have a lot of technology at their fingertips and very skilled people to work it - just like the people and firms that turn Hollywood films into DVDs. That's the simple answer and there is nothing really simple about it.

  • How do I take advantage of Adobe's $9.99 special for PS and Lightroom?

I have already downloaded and installed PS CC successfully, but nothing has prompted me to install Lightroom.  LR doesn't even seem to be part of the CC app group.

Hmmm, You take advantage of the offer? or is it the other way arund?
I am interested to know how many people are jumping on this one. Since I own LR 5, why should I now pay a monthly fee? No discount for owners, but an incentive to get roped into a subscription.
The ad says limited time offer, but when I chatted with a rep I was told that this would be an on-going service and that I would be able to renew next year at the same price. So, this tells me that it is NOT a limited time offer, but a way to move us away from the perpetual licence and into the monthly subscription service.
I have very little need for Photoshop since starting to use LR.

  • After updating to 10.7.4, my second monitor lost its color profile, for Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm on a 2011 MBP with the AMD video chip

Has anyone else had this happen? Is Apple aware - how can I inform them of my issue - do I have to wait months and months till 10.7.5 comes out, for a solution?
    Thanks,
    George

I have had the issue with a Snow Leopard but never with Lion.
Can you go to System Preferences>Displays>Color and select your profile.
I had made 3 profiles and they are all still there and my iMac is still using the same one I previously selected

  • Where/how to obtain camera profiles for Adobe Camera Raw 7.3?

Where can you get camera profiles for ACR?  And how do you load them into ACR?  Is the Sony A77 on that list?  Need help on this one.  Thanks.

Adobe Standard is the only camera profile available for your camera, then, if that’s all you see.
Adobe only makes the so-called “camera-match” profiles, with names like Camera Standard, Camera Portrait, Camera Faithful, etc, for Canon and Nikon and a select few others.  I suspect there is a lot of work involved in these and they don’t do it for cameras they see as less popular or less used.
They wouldn’t be the same as the Camera-Match profiles from Adobe but you can create your own proilfes with an X-Rite 24-patch ColorChecker Classic and the Adobe DNG Profile Editor or using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport package:

  • I have created a spreadsheet on numbers for ipad with a list of customers as a drop down menu. How can i make their address appear underneath when i select the customer?

I have created a spreadsheet on numbers for ipad with a list of customers as a drop down menu. How can i make their address appear underneath when I select the customer?
    iselect the customer?

    Hi bazza,
We won't be able to put the address from a formula into the same cell that you enter the customer's name. We can put the address in the cell under the customers name.
First let's take James advice and concatenate the address in the address table.
Here is the formula in G2
    =CONCATENATE(B2&"
    ",C2&"
    ",D2&"
    ",E2)
It shows this way because after I clicked on B2 and typed [&"] (no brackets) I typed option-return
This gives you your new line. Then I typed the closing ". I repeated this for the rest of the address.
Next we want to bring this to your order sheet. I prefer using the two formulas OFFSET and MATCH instead of VLOOKUP.
base tells OFFSETwhere to start counting from. Click A1.
row-offset is for the row. we will use MATCH() -1 to give us the row.
What MATCH does is give you the row number where something is found and you can specify an exact match. I usually construct the MATCH formula first and then cut and paste it into OFFSET. MATCH looks like this: MATCH(A2,Table 1::A,0). A2 is what we are looking for, Table 1A::A is where we are looking (the entire column A), and 0 means we want an exact match. Can you see it inside the OFFSET formula? Notice that we had to subtract 1 from its result.
column-offset tells OFFSET which column A=0 so we want 6.
we ignore "rows", "colomns" we don't need them.
If this seems like too much, just break it down into small pieces.

  • How can I make N78 camera silent?

I am frustrated that the silent mode on my N78 does not make the camera silent.  It appears that I am only able to select from 4 built-in camera shutter noises.  It would be great if there was a 5th option (none).  It is a pain when I am wanting to take a discrete photo and it makes this noise.  Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have checked all the settings in the Silent profile and can find nothing that works to make the shutter silent.
I had never even thought that it might be illegal for a camera to be silent.  If that is the case then why are video cameras allowed to be silent when operating?  Shouldn't video camera manufacturers be compelled to make them beep every 5 seconds? (presumably the beep could be digitally omitted from the sound track). Surely a pervert would just set a video running and leave it going all day rather than risk detection taking a still on their nokia!
All I want to be able to do is take a photo without distracting everyone around me.  I am thinking of lectures, tours etc where I find shutters going off are distracting.  I gather there are other phones are able to take photos without sound - why not my N78?  Digital cameras can be set to silent - why not my N78?

  • How do I install a camera profile into CS2 raw converter

I recently purchased a ColorChecker Passport and along with the software, created a camera profile for my Olympus E-300. The CCP software crated a camera profile that was duly placed into the c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\adobe\cameraraw\cameraprofile\olumpus e-300 Directory. When I open an olympus ORF raw file from cs2 or bridge, and select the calibrate tab the only thing that is available in the camera calibrate box is ACR 2.4. Clicking the drop down arrow doesn't show anything else.
I have turned off colormanagement in photoshop.
Can anybody tell me how I can get photo shop to recognize the new camera profile?
I have tried restarting photoshop and Bridge after the DCp file was added to teh directory.
    ACR verssion 3.7(?)
    OS is windows home 64
    8 gigs of ram
    Photoshop cs2 version 9.0.1
    adobe bridge cs2 version 1.0.4.6
I have also performed the same tasks on photoshop cs3 on my work computer with the same results.

The earliest version of Camera Raw to use DNG Profiles was version 4.6 in Photoshop CS3...so, you won't be able to use that DNG profile in ACR 3.7.
