How does Aperture store changes

The difference between iPhoto and Aperture is that when you edit a photo in iPhoto, the app creates an entirely new file to store the changes, while Aperture, on the other hand, can store multiple versions (edits) of a picture in a single file, thus taking less hard drive space, right?
So my question is, can Aperture do this with RAW pictures only or does it edit JPEGs the same way as well?

It does this on all images that it supports.
It merely creates a thumbnail (mini and tiny) for the adjusted versions to be able to display them in Quickt Preview, and in your browser. and whe you look at the image in the viewer without quick preview it will load the original file and then apply the adjustments that were made to it.

  • How does aperture store pictures on external drive?

Ok, I imported pictures to aperture, and I saved them on an external drive. The Library is on the internal drive. When I do editing, or try to share Pictures from Aperture, I have to connect my external drive. What I don`t understand is that I can drag these pictures to final cut, without connecting my drive. How is this possible? When does FCPX requires connection withe the "real media"?

When you drag from the Browser you are exporting the JPEG previews stored in your Aperture library. It will depend on your settings in the Aperture Preferences > Preview tab, how good the resolution of these previews will be.
Many applications can access these previews using the Media Browser, even if your external drive with the originals is not connected. You need the originals if you use "File > Export" or if you edit the photos.

  • Why and how does Adobe Store's policy deliberately impede Least Developed Countries from developing?

    Hi there,
My name is Dr Eric Mousset. I currently reside in Cambodia, having the privilege to serve as (international) Technical Assistant to support a Government project that is co-funded by the Royal Government of Cambodia and the World Bank, and purposed to Higher Education Capacity and Quality Improvement.
My mission implies conducting a survey on skills demand by employers and skills supply by Higher Education Institutions, in order to better inform further policy development.
Among the expected policy outcomes: a more effective alignment between skills supply and job market needs.
Among the desired policy impacts: providing the Cambodian economy with the HR skills that are required for its growth and diversification.
I am impressed by the combined capabilities of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and Adobe Forms Central. And until this morning it was on top of my shortlist of surveying tools.
Unfortunatley, while attempting to upgrade to FormsCentral's "Plus" plan, I have received the following reply from Adobe:
    Unsupported Country
    Thus here is my question:
Why and how does Adobe Store's policy deliberately impede Least Developed Countries from developing?
    Yours sincerely,
    Dr Eric Mousset

    Hi;
I can't speak to the business decisions that lead to which countries we enable purchasing subscriptions in the store, but I can guarantee you that it is not to impede anyones development.
A credit card with an address in any of the supported countries can be used for purchasing the subscription, this has enabled many to get around the issue, but that is the only way to subscribe.
    Thanks,

  • How does a user change their password?

I have been using OS X server to provide, among other things, centralised user accounts, such that any user can logon to any mac on the network by providing mobile accounts. However, if a user wants to change their password, this only appears to affect the local (cached) copy of the account and doesn't appear to change it centrally. i.e. use System Preferences-> Accounts
How does a user change their 'network' password in OS X Server?

There is no inbuilt functionality to change the user password from SharePoint. All user account details need to be managed from AD.

  • How does Aperture run on 128MB of VRAM?

I want to purchase the low end mac book pro. How does aperture run on the 128MB of VRAM?
Will it run okay and how will it compare to the 256MB one?
Also, is it different for Ap1.5 and Ap2?

    ZLH wrote:

It is really simple: Aperture performs better with stronger hardware. As one goes up the line of Mac hardware performance improves.
Although Aperture will run on any MacIntel with at least 2 GB RAM, all laptops and iMacs are very significantly limiting to Aperture's performance. IMO if one buys a by-definition-limiting box like a MBP (I own one) it makes most sense to buy the strongest MBP available.
Whatever you buy, max out the RAM.

  • How does Aperture handle file structure

I have been working with iPhoto since its infancy and have one big issue with it, namely that it is such a closed system. I dislike that everything needs to be imported and exported to use it elsewhere, clogging up my computer with all these duplicates. Does Aperture handle that better? I spent 2 hours reading different reviews and discussions and for some reason, nobody seems to discuss exactly that, maybe most people don't mind to have a vault structure? If so, how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
    Thanks ~ Barb

namely that it is such a closed system.
    It's not. It's a Database and this
    everything needs to be imported...
is a characteristic of databases. This
and exported to use it elsewhere
is just not true if you use any of the very many ways that the OS and other applications integrate with iPhoto. I rarely, if ever, exported from iPhoto when it was my primary Photo app.
The point is not to defend iPhoto, but if the database aspect of it irritates you then run a mile from Aperture. Everything has to be imported and can be accessed only in (pretty much) the same ways as they can be in iPhoto.
how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
Here's a stock answer I use over on the iPhoto forum. You can pretty much swap the word 'Aperture' for iPhoto:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
+*(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)+*
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Regards
    TD

  • How does Aperture run on a PowerBook?

Does Aperture run well on a PowerBook?

    Hi
I have a PB 1.5MHZ and 1GB RAM. Aperture works quite ok for basic stuff(despite all the beta quality problems that are not acceptable, but this is another story). I have 12'000 photos in the entire library and it takes some seconds to load them all. But I never work with all images at the same time. So, If you have not incredible huge projects this is not an issue. However, I do not use many raw images but only high res jpg's (8 and 10 m-pixels).
This is for browsing, working with keywords etc. - the powerbook works fine.
But when it comes to editing, the Powerbook really hits the limit. Maybe this is also because I have only 1 gig of RAM. E.g. using the patch tool is almost impossible since moving the patch area takes 5 seconds to recalculate. The feeling is like having a blind mouse - you navigate and wait to see where your pointer now is. This real-time feature is totaly unusable on a powerbook. Basic editing like contrast, exposer works ok.
And since everything is realtime, the more image adjustments you make, the slower everything gets.
Importing is really a slow dog. In the office I have a dual 2.7Ghz machine with lots of RAM and even there importing images is slow.
But still, I was quite surprised how well it woks on my Powerbook. I do the big things in the office, but beeing able to take everything with me and do some works on my projects in the train or whatever is really good.
I hope that we soon get very fast dual core intel based powerbooks that might even be faster than todays dual powermacs...
    Cheers

  • How does AppleScript store user input?

    So another question,
if I were to put the following into an AppleScript:
set password to text returned of (display dialog "Enter your password" default answer "" with hidden answer)
does AppleScript store this as clear text? If so, how long does it retain this?
    Thanks!

does AppleScript store this as clear text? If so, how long does it retain this?
It doesn't store it at all - well, other than in memory as the variable password
Since it's in memory, if someone were able to dump the contents of your system's memory they could, conceivably, see the value, but it wouldn't be obvious.
Like all AppleScript variables, it's value is lost as soon as it goes out of scope - typically when the script ends, unless you're in a handler, in which case it is discarded as soon as the current handler returns, even if the main script continues to run. For example:
    on run
my doSomething() -- call the doSomething() handler
display dialog myPassword -- error - myPassword is not defined
    end run
    on doSomething()
set myPassword to text returned of (display dialog "Enter your password" default answer "" with hidden answer)
display dialog myPassword -- works because you're inside the handler where myPassword is defined
    end doSomething
In this case the run handler calls doSomething() which asks for the password and displays it in a dialog. When the handler returns, though, the variable is lost and can no longer be used.

  • How does iSync recognise changes in Mac and phone

    Hi all,
After getting a brand new cellphone Motorola V3X, i managed to transfer all contacts from my MAC address book to the phone via iSync.
    However, i noted the following:
    1. Let say in MAC address book there is an entry called
"sarah jessica" (as first name) and "parker" (as last name), after sync and transferred to phone, the phone first name becomes "sarah-jessica" while last name remains. The same applies when 2 words appeared in last name, and it will be separated with "-" in phone after sync. Any idea?
    2. Assuming both phone and MAC address book are in sync, and i made changes to contact A in MAC then later made a different change in contact A in phone. If i sync, which entry will be considered as the latest and how does iSync differentiate it?
Sorry for the length questions as i am a newbie with iSync.
    Thanks

It's difficult to answer your question directly, because not all sync schemas and their extensions are public. I think Julian is absolutely correct when he points to the behavior you see being the result of Motorola's implementation of contact records. Their structure is generally more restrictive—far less flexible, actually—than those of others like Nokia and SONY Ericsson, and Apple programmers and developers must work within the bounds of these implementations when matching data records through iSync. Some of the issues are very clearly Motorola's alone, and some are likely generic Symbian issues.
This link is a general overview of how the Sync Services framework operates, and might help you understand the second observation you raised:
    http://developer.apple.com/macosx/syncservices.html
This one is a link to the public schema for the Address Book, and shows that it is actually much more detailed and complex than surely almost anyone outside of the developer community understands:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SyncService sSchemaRef/index.html
And, it's made more so when extensions are added by third-parties to the schema, like those in CRM applications and alternative synchronization programs like the Missing Sync for Palm OS.

  • How Does Elements Store Photos?

Is just gotten version 11 for the mac.  I imported one folder of images (which has subfolders) to try out the organizer.  I think I need to understand better what Elements is doing with my images before I proceed.
When I look at the left pane, I see Albums (there are none yet) and My Folders.  There I see the folders of images that were imported.  They are all shown at the same level, with no subfolders.
This leads me to believe Organizer is not actually making copies of my images and importing them, but merely creating a catalogue that points to them.  Do I have that right?  I can use Albums to organize the photos, but once again, the Albums won't contain the photos, but only point to them, correct?
My photos are woefully organized in folders on my hard drive.  I'm almost thinking that before I import into Elements, I should get my folders organized and cleaned up outside of Elements.  Even though I could have good Album structure in Elements. it bothers me that down there at the actual folder level, it's all a piece of @#%&.  Can I use Organizer to do that folder organizing even before I start the Album organizing?
How does Elements handle editing of images?  iPhoto (which copies photos into its catalog), keeps a version of the original when editing is done.  Does Elements do that, or is there only one version of IMG_001 no matter how many edits are applied to it?
If the images are kept in my original folder structure and I edit an image outside of Elements, when I open the image in Elements, do I get the edited image?
I'm trying to decide between iPhoto and Elements, mainly for organizing purposes, so answers to these questions will help me decide.  I appreciate your help.

Under normal circumstances, the organizer is just a database: it merely makes entries for the photos you import, without copying anything. The one exception is the "from iphoto" command, which duplicates the photos in your iphoto library in another location (although, again, the copies are not stored "in" PSE). The reason for this is that poking around at the iphoto library from outside iphoto is a sure way to eventually corrupt the library and lose the photos it contains.
If a photo is in the organizer, you can save as many PSE versions as you like. This is one advantage that organizer has over iphoto. You also have access to all the versions all the time (unlike iphoto where you must lose your edited version to get back to the original.) Overall, I would not say that organizer is a clear winner over iphoto, but this is probably the biggest point on its side in the debate.

  • Import from iPhoto: how does Aperture manage videos?

This is relevant to some persons migrating from iPhoto to Aperture. My iPhoto Library contains a few small camera videos. I know Aperture doesn't handle these. When it does the import into Aperture, does it let the user know that there are some files it can't handle? Does it make it easy for someone to discard their iPhoto Library without losing the videos?

So someone who wished to dump their iPhoto Library after migrating to Aperture, might unwittingly lose videos they'd forgotten about -- they have to know to search for the videos and set them aside. Aperture does not help avoid that error.
(I saw your note on needing to keep iPhoto. It's true that one may use iPhoto for its many unique secondary services, but keeping two libraries of the same images is ridiculously inefficient.)
I've long been tempted to migrate to Aperture, but the inability to change 'image acquired' dates, concerns about how trustworthy the iPhoto migration really is, and Aperture's lack of official support for the MacBook have all held me back.
This lack of attention to detail wrt to iPhoto import reinforces the sense I have that Aperture isn't where I personally need it to be (not that iPhoto is perfect, but that's the devil I know). I know it works well for many others and I may yet migrate --- probably in a year or two and then only if they decide to support the MacBook.

  • How does Java store floating point numbers?

    Hello
I'm writing a paper about floating point numbers in which I compare an IEEE-754 compatible language [c] with Java. I read that Java can do a conversion decimal->binary->decimal and retain the same value whereas c can't. I found several documents discussing the pros and cons of that but I can't find any information about how it is implemented.
I hope someone can explain it to me, or post a link to a site explaining it.
    Cheers
    Huttu

    So it is a myth.
I still ask because I observed a oddity: When I store 1.4 in c and printf( %2.20f\n",a); it I get 1.39999999999999991118. If I do the same in Java with System.out.printf( %2.20f\n",a); I get 1.4. If I multiply the variable with itself I get 1.95999999999999970000:
    double a=1.4;
    a=a*a;
    System.out.printf( %2.20f\n",a);
    {code}
Does this happen because of the rounding in Java?
