How does compressing movie files work?

Hello! I am new here, and with FC i made a 17GB movie. However, i wish to compress it so it doesnt take up as much room on my hard drive. Can i compress this movie file so it takes up much less? How should i compress it? And does it hurt the quality of it or how do i de compress it? Thanks!

Yes. What format is it now, what size are you aiming for? H264 is a good choice, great results and a much smaller file size.

Use Compressor or QuickTimePlayers "Export" function -you already have both.
MPEG Streamclip will also make H264 and is a free download. There are several others which you can buy, Autodesk Cleaner and Sorenson Squeeze are two that spring to mind.
And does it hurt the quality of it...
It can turn out poor if the compression is overdone. Test your compression on a small section first -you could mark in and out on part of your movie in QuickTime Player, copy/paste it into a new QuickTime Player document and use that for testing.

That usually does not turn out so well. Keep the original instead -hard drives are cheap these days. Just buy an external drive and store it there.

So, I have a monster 4GB folder full of .MOV files shot on an iPhone 4 that I need to compress small enough to fit on two or three 700MB discs - or a 2GB flash drive. The basic answer here is that any converter app that exports the audio + video data to a lower combined total data rate will produce a small file. However, there is a limit to your ability to decrease the data rates and still produce useable output. In general, decreasing the data rate will drecrease quality unless you also decrease the dimensions of the targeted encoding matrix and/or otherwise modify the distribution of data per unit of time. In most cases the basic strategy is to use a high effeciency codec export option that allows the user to manually modify the export settings to produce the most compact file with a level of quality that the user "can live with." How low you can go will usually depend on the preferences of the specific user. Since your iPhone files are already highly compressed, my personal recommendation in your case would really be to move up to higher density optical media (e.g., DVD) or break down and spend the $10-$20 it would take to upgrade to a 16 GB or 32 GB drive.

Time Machine is part of the System software, not a feature of the word processing and page layout application, Pages, the topic in this community.
That said, Time Machine is pretty easy to get into.
In the Finder, open the folder containing the current version of the file.
Select the file, then click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose Enter Time machine.
The folder window will move to the center of the screen, and two arrows will appear near the lower right corner of the window.
Click the one pointing back to go back in time, and the one pointing toward the front (of the computer) to return to the present. The display will stop at each saved version of the file along the way.

you're missing the concept of iM .. you don't move 'files' from Event to Project Library.. Events is the big box of all your imported clips; now, from that box of bricks, you drag the clips into all kind of projects.. you can 're-use' the same clip again'n again in many projects.. you can use all clips of all Events in one Project.. or all clips of one Event in two projects.. or..

Thanks for your quick response. The original movies were taken on a Canon ES970 (1990's). I don't know the resolution but things were not as high tech back then.,.. I used a Roxio software to convert them on my MacBook Air. I didn't realize that I could use Adobe Premiere Elements to do that or I would have. However my old camera did not have a cable to attach it to a computer and the Roxio software came with it.
I then saved the recordings on an external hard drive. I did not make movies from them using iMovie or edit them in any way. They are simply .MOV files and they can be played on my Mac. Upon realizing how much memory it takes to work on videos, I decided it might be easier to burn DVD's on my husband's new Dell desktop that came with Windows 8. I downloaded Quicktime as suggested and still the movies can't be added to Premiere.

The pixelated image above has the same colour balance as the other two.
So how does compression affect the integrity of colours?

Think of an image as having two distinct layers: the black & white layer, over which the color information is laid by the color layer.
Bad compression also uses poor color sampling -- aka color resolution -- to save file size. It will average the values of two adjacent color pixels to create a larger pixel of the avaraged color. If it's REALLY bad -- as in DSLR video and HDV -- it will average the colors of FOUR adjacent pixels an even larger pixel of the average color.

"Will the Apple TV now read directly from the Time Capsule?" ATV does not 'read' from the TC. It connects to the Mac and itunes library associated with the Mac. Of course the itunes program can 'point' to a library on the TC. You'll still need to have itunes open and the Mac powered on and not sleeping with the TC mounted to the Desktop to use ATV properly. So bottom line the use of TC just adds one more step to view files on the ATV.

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.
