I have tried to use FaceTime multiple times and it always told me that I needed wifi. I went to show my friend what it said when I tried it and it worked. Wifi free! *** why couldn't it work all the time like that

if your youtube was already running then I would exit out of the application completely by double clicking your home button and then search for your youtube app on the row that will show below and then press and hold down the youtube icon and then click the "X" to exit out of it. Afterwards try to reopen youtube and play a video to see if it works

How does gnome work without acpid?

I have set up gnome3 with laptop-mode-tools, but without acpid on my laptop. The power-management stuff works, but seems incomplete. For example, gnome is able to detect when I remove the AC plug, or close the lid, or press the sleep button. But it does not seem to detect when power is critically low, and does not sleep/hibernate, like it's configured to do. There's also a problem I think to do this when laptop is already sleeping. I left it once over night in sleep mode, with little battery power remaining, to test it. The expectation was to resume from sleep when battery was critically low and go hibernate. Instead it just crashed.
The wiki's suggest that acpid daemon is required to deliver acpi events, but then I wonder: how does gnome (and possibly also laptop-mode-tools) detect these events without acpid?

Acpid just listens on acpi events but not creates them.
You can always listen to acpi events using the command 'acpi_listen'

My brand new MacBook Air has disapeared from my home. I had it signed onto ICloud along with several other devices that I own. I am able to locate everything but the MB Air. The device was secured with a password. Will it still send a position report to ICloud if it is password protected? What if the perp signs on as a guest? If he is able to hook up to a wifi signal, will it ping ICloud? What if he signs it on to another ICloud account?

It doesn't required to log in to iCloud to erase all settings and content unless you haven't turn off 'Find My iPhone' in iCloud. In this case, try to open iCloud with a browser on your computer > log in with your iCloud account > click 'Find My iPhone' > on the top of the window, click the drop-down list for 'All Devices' > choose your iPhone and click the option 'Remove from Account' or you can click 'Erase iPhone' to erase all data on your iPhone.

We are from Austria and we are travelling to the US next week. As we have rent a car to get around we thought it would be a great help to install the TomTom Navigation on our iPad 2. But the question is if it does also work without WiFi as we will not have a SIM-Card or something else in the iPad when we are travelling around.

My suggestion would be to rent a car with the Tom Tom or another similar product already installed. It will be much easier to use that I think than your iPad while driving. Most major rental companies offer these on their vehicles in the US for a fee.

WiFi will work, cellular will work but they may not be able to access LTE, they will have to send it back to you for the warranty work.

Hey Calchick, I didn't read much of the details, only looked for key words, like offline, translation, etc. Illaass is correct, voice recognition and translation programs tend to be very large. If you have web access, you can talk in your native language and be heard in the foreign language. With out the web, your a text and read operation.
Personal experience, may help you, take of it what you will-- in BC time, (Before Computers) and traveling around, I found if you learn a few basic phrases in the language of the people you are visiting, i.e., things like, "Can you help me?", "Where am I" (have a map in hand when you ask this), "Where is the bathroom", "How much?", "Where do you go eat", "Where's the market?", "Take me to the pharmacy / hospital", and the most important phrase: "Thank You" I know, dumb examples but you get the point, about 20 phrases that cover the basics, who, what, where, when, and how, (think about the questions or things you would ask if you were in a city, in the country you now live, that you have never been in) and a working knowledge of some basic answers, (also, learn a few cruse words, that way you will know if your getting help or the butt of a joke), along with a translation guide book, you can get through almost any situation. Being able to speak even just a little of the other persons language, without using a device, will make most people want to help you, (unless you get a real A-hole), most people will help you if you make an attempt to learn and speak there language, even if it's just a little, (shows you cared enough to try). The translator app just replaces the book, and it will make it easier to learn the phrases. Remember; The app is just a tool, not your mouth. It can get a little rough at times, but generally works, got me through a few countries and made a few friends along the way. Having a soccer ball helps too! Hope this helps, have good travels. I was told once they put in a new sim card and use it, whatever software the police have, it will show up.

Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes. If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.
