How does genius identify songs?

I'm just starting to use the genius feature now to make quick playlists. I have a question, though.. What does genius use to identify songs? I've got some non iTunes songs in my library, stuff I've ripped from CDs, etc. I want to make sure genius is drawing from my entire library. Thanks.

I can make a Genius playlist using a song ripped from a CD or an MP3 from Amazon. Seems to work with anything in my library. Of course, Genius will ignore unchecked songs.

  • How does genius pick songs for mixes?

Generally, Genius works really well with popular stuff but then you pick a World song or a Jazz song and hello! All **** breaks loose.
For example - I pick Allen Toussaint's "Long, Long Journey" and the next song in the line-up is Missy Elliott "Work It." The only music similar to Amaral is apparently Latin or any World (Ana Gabriel, Juanes, Angelique Kidjo, Cesaria Evora, Sergio Mendes, Seu Jorge, etc). The best 'mix' I ever got though was with Dusty Springfield - Metallica, White Zombie, Feeder, Elastica and one Dionne Warwick song. Wow.
How does Genius work? Does it really look at other user's music selection and decide, "well, those artists are black so they can go together. They speak a different language so they can go together?" Anyone know how to improve the system?

I'm also curious about the Genius Mixes too. It seems to create Mixes only based on my sync'd songs; not my entire library. I just want to make sure this is how Genius is supposed to work or if there are configuration settings for it.

How does one copy songs from an iPod nano to a new computer?

You can't add any iOS to a Nano since it doesn't run iOS.
For iTunes purchased music connect to your computer and in iTunes go to File > Transfer purchases.
For non-iTunes music you will need 3rd party software. Assuming you have a Windows computer try Yamipod.

  • How does Genius work?

What does the Touch base the Genius Playlists on? Does it look for other songs in the same genre?

On one level, I think I know. On another level, I can only guess (I think its a good guess).
What I have noticed is that the Genius makes connections between artists and band they once played in, for example: Blind Faith and Eric Clapton and Cream and Derek and the Dominoes. It places music in genres, Blues, Rock .... I believe that genius also dates music: "the 50's" and "the 60's".
I did an "Allman Brother" Genius search and got back Eric Clapton, Cream, Neil Young (Down By the River), Buffalo Springfield (Mr. Soul), The Band, Doobie Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Derek and the Dominoes, Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Humble Pie and ZZ Top. All these artists are kinda within the genre and of the era. Other songs are from artists that are of the era, but not of the genre: Loggins and Messina, Robert Palmer, Steely Dan and Rod Steward (Every Picture Tells a Story).
The big question is how the Genius links unknown songs. This is a guess, but I believe the Genius searches customer iTunes and builds on what the customer lists as the genre. I believe the customer has some input and impact on the Genius because the list of "unknown" songs I have is becoming fewer and fewer as the days go by.
One last thing, the more songs you have the better the results. I have a lot of music and I am getting great results.
    Good Luck.

  • How does Apple identify the MB Air?

Here is something I can't figure out. I was checking today on the Apple Recycle program where I could turn in my MB Air, first version, and get credit to use in purchase of a newer one. So I go through the steps until the last one when I get a list of the different models of MB Air. I "think" I know which one I have but the confusion is that that they list numbers after each model name and brief specs and this number, which seems the way they identify which one it is, I cannot find on the MB Air itself. That is if I use "About this Mac" and get all the hardware info there, no number like the one that Apple is using for identification shows up in that window. So I am left with the remaining difficult of being unsure which one I have. I would think that if Apple is using some number to identify each model that it would be readily found, wouldn't you? A puzzle. Well, maybe I am just not seeing it but any suggestions welcome.

  • How does B2B in SOA SUite 11g identify sender/receiver of inbound document?

    Hi All,
I am checking basic B2B features - custom document protocol. I have defined docuement definition, trading partner, agreement, channels as per guide. When I copy (manually) a sample xml payload (complaint to definition xsd and identification expression), it gives error as the sender could not be identified (receiver is taken as the host as I am putting the file over host's listening channel).
So question is - how does B2B identify sender, receiver and match the incoming message payload to identify the agreement?
    Thanks in advance.
    regards, sibendu

    Hi Sibendu,
First of all, let me direct you to the right forum, Oracle Integration B2B forum - Integration - B2B
    Now coming to your question,
how does B2B identify sender, receiver and match the incoming message payload to identify the agreement? For each and every document, exchange and transport protocol there are certain fields (generally message headers) on the basis of which B2B identifies the sender and receiver. As far as identifying the incoming message payload is concerned, in each and every document definition we define some UNIQUE selection criteria to identify a document. For XML documents, it is the X-Path of some node(and/or it's value) and for non-xml documents, it is the start and end position of some element (and/or it's value) in the document.
You may get faster and better answer in Oracle B2B forum, for the questions related to Oracle B2B (10g/11g).

  • How does FGEN demo program (SFP) identify input file formats?

The FGEN Soft Front Panel (SFP) application allows users to select an input file containing waveform data for demonstration. Files of various formats are listed in a popup prompt window. How does SFP identify the type of the data in the files? Does the file extension (.bin, .lvm) indicate what's inside?

If you installed NI-FGEN in the default directory, then C:\Users\Public\Documents\National Instruments\NI-FGEN\examples\Waveforms\Waveformdescription.txt should have descriptions of each of the example waveforms and what is inside the file.
The NI Signal Generators Help file (Start > All Programs > National Instruments > NI-FGEN > Documentation) has the Waveform File Specifications under Interactive Tools > FGEN Soft Front Panel > Waveform File Specifications.
The SFP does use the file extension to determine the file type. As a simple test, I renamed the fgMode-square.bin example file to fgMode-square.lvm. When I tried to load the renamed file, it gave me an error declaring that the file is not a valid LabVIEW Measurement File (lvm), thus proving the software checks the file extension to determine the contents.

  • How does 3.1's new "Genius Mix" differ from a Genius Playlist?

Hey guys I still haven't updated to 3.1 because of all the complaints and issues associated with it, but I was curious about one feature I'm missing out on... How does the new Genius Mix any different than an automated Genius Playlist that is made when you turn on Genius on your iPhone???
Genius just collects up to 25 songs by different artists in the same genre... What does Genius Mix do differently?
Thanks to anybody who answers me... I'm just curious, that's all.

Genius mixes are created in iTunes 9. It's like Genius, but different. Genius mixes come automatically.
"This new feature searches your iTunes library, finds songs that go great together, and creates multiple mixes you’ll love. All automatically. These mixes are like channels programmed entirely with your music. You may discover songs you never knew you had — and rediscover forgotten favorites."
iTunes will create up to 12 Genius mixes, like Rock Mix 1, Rock Mix 2, Oldies Mix, Alternative
Mix, etc. These are like radio stations created from your own music. The songs in the mix can't can't be listed.
Go here and scroll down to Genius Mix. http://www.apple.com/itunes/whats-new/

  • How does iTunes Genius handle two libraries for the same user?

I've been reading lately about how iTunes Genius should work. To my understanding, one of its basic principles, is absorbing usage data from users in order to create a database consisting of as much information possible. I don't expect a detailed explanation about the algorithms here. I know Apple doesn't share that kind of information (for obvious reasons) and I doubt I'd be able to understand much of it anyway. What I would like to know, though, in general terms, is how does this mechanism handle an instance like mine, where I use my Apple ID on two computers - one at home, another at work. That way, I have all my songs on both computers, so I can listen to them in either location. Obviously, each such library produces different usage data.
Thanks in advance for any information, as I'm quite curious about it.

    Dear Fateh,
    Thanks for the reply.
The features of this plugin are:
Configurable timeout actions including alert, redirect, and logout
    Optional and configurable warning message
Option to keep session alive if user isn’t truly idle. Special thanks to Martin D’Souza for a great idea on how to implement this feature.
But it cannot stop a new session for a user, if there is an active (in my definition apex_workspace_activity_log.seconds_ago<240) session already running for that user.
    Regards,
    Deepika.
