  • Does home sharing work between iOS devices

Or is it only from a mac or pc to an ios device.

    HI there,
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • How does Home Sharing Work?

My son has my old iPod Nano (4th generation).  I have an iPod Touch (4th generation) and an iPhone 5.  Everything on my lap top syncs just fine.  But I can't figure out how to get my music into my son's library on his lap top.  We've turned on Home Sharing in both File and Preferences.  But it says we're not connected.  Is it because we only have 1 Apple ID?

I'm having a similar problem. Your Apple ID is supposed to be the same for home sharing to work.
I've done this before but it was quite a while ago. I'm trying to import my library from my desktop to my laptop, they have the same Apple ID, they are both authorized on my account, home sharing is turned on and checked in the library menu (on both computers), and the Bonjur service is enabled, however the home sharing icon just isn't there. There is no way for me to access the library of the other computer to import the files. Help would be much appreciated.

When home sharing is turned on on multiple devices, should the Itunes library automatically appear to listen to songs through another device? Example Library of songs is on MacBook- can I listen through Iphone?

No, I've already read the support online. I have Home Sharing turned on but nothing happens, how do I access the Itunes library from another device? Should it automatically download or is there another step?

  • HT4557 Does home sharing work for apps? The instructions make it sound as though home sharing really only allows you to stream content.

Does home sharing work for apps? My young son received iPad mini for Christmas, and I don't want him to have to repurchase the games and other raps I'd already bought for him that are resident on my iPad.

does Home Sharing allow you to copy any item begtween libraries, including CDs you have ripped yourself
It certainly allows you to copy ripped CDs. Just did that myself last week.

How does iPhoto sharing (in preferences) work?  If you enable it, does it allow someone to view your photos while on a public wifi? I am using a macbook pro with 10.7.4

Only if you set it to do so and only if the person on the other end has iPhoto.

  • How does display sharing work? (i.e. a MBA using a 27" iMac as ext display)

I have a 27" iMac, and am considering a MacBook Air: one consideration in choosing the MBA (which has a smaller screen that I would choose) is that if i can use the iMac at home as ext displaym then I can live when travelling with the smaller MBA display (vs. a 15" MBP).
However, when I hook the MBA to the iMac, how do I toggle the iMac display between iMAc and the MBA?
Also, does hooking them up via MiniDP mean that the iMac keyboard and mouse will control the MBA? Or will I need to sit at my desk with two of each?
    Thanks

    Type ⌘ F2

You can keep your MacBook Air open and use the iMac as display #2. You will use the MacBook Air's keyboard and trackpad (or mouse) to control the machine.
You can keep the MacBook Air plugged in and closed, connect an external keyboard and external mouse/trackpad and run the MacBook Air in "closed clamshell" mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131?viewlocale=en_US
The hardest part is finding a mini display port to mini display port cable. In theory, you may be able to use the iMac's video and audio with a MacBook Air. No guarantees on that. You will need the latest spec on the cable and just finding a cable may be a challenge.

  • How does Family Sharing work if both members have iTunes Match subscriptions?

I wanted to add someone to my family sharing in the new iOS 8 but we both have separate iTunes match subscriptions. How are those two subscriptions effected if she is added to my family sharing or are the two match accounts merged? Any advice on this would be great.

I'm still trying to figure out this family sharing thing, but I THINK the other person will still be logged in with their own apple id, so they would have access to their own iTunes match, and not yours.  I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to "family share" iTunes match.  Like I said, i'm still working on it, but so far on the one account i've set it up on, I didn't have to log that user out.

  • 2 Ipods, 1 Itunes: How does podcast sharing work?

I have read the apple documentation on how to share an itunes library with a second ipod. In my case, it will be with my wife. If I decide to go with the second option (keep one login account, but create various playlists that get synced to specific ipods), how will Itunes keep track of which podcasts have been listened to? Will itunes simply change its state to reflect the most recent sync? Or is there some way to keep track of which Ipod has listened to which podcasts?

Will itunes simply change its state to reflect the most recent sync?
    Yes.
Or is there some way to keep track of which Ipod has listened to which podcasts?
    No.

  • Does home sharing allow my husband and I to share our itunes content?  If so, how do we do that since it requires the use of the same Apple ID and password on each device to do so.  His itunes is linked to his email and mine is linked to my email...

Does home sharing allow my husband and I to share our iTunes content?  If so, how does this work?  From what I've read to use home sharing the devices/computers all require the same Apple ID and password.  My husbands iTunes is linked to his email/password and mine is my email/password.  So if that's the case how to we go about sharing?  God I hope that makes sense.

All apps are forever tied to the Apple ID that bought them. To stop your id from popping up, you need to delete the apps on his phone, and then repurchase them under his account.

  • Home Sharing works, but not able to transfer files between PCs.

I have two laptops at home, one is an old one I keep dedicated to my Apple TV 2nd Gen. (so I don't have to have my laptop on, or my wife can use the ATV if I'm at work w/ my laptop, etc.)
Anyway, I sync all my media between both computers so when my laptop is not home, ATV still has full media function (as does my laptop).  Used to be able to connect via Home Sharing and there was a drop-down menu with an option at the bottom of the Library to show only those files not in my library.  I would use that function to transfer all recently added media to the ATV laptop.  Since upgrading to iTunes 10, that dropdown menu is nowhere to be found.  Any ideas?
I can still connect and play media through Home Sharing, but if my primary laptop leaves the range of the network, the new media content on it can't be accessed on ATV.  Primary laptop is Windows 7, ATV-dedicated lap is on Windows XP.
Was the ability to transfer files through Home Sharing lost between iTunes 9 and 10 or did this feature just get moved somewhere else?  If it was lost, how can I revert back to iTunes 9?  If nothing else, I can just transfer via an external HD, but was just very convenient and easy through Home Sharing...
    Thanks for any input!

  • Does Home Sharing only work over wi-fi?

This may seem like an odd question, but I think it may be the root of my problem. I have a network that uses three Devolo mains network extenders in various rooms (the house has very thick walls). All three Devolo mains plugs connect (via the ring main) to the router. An iMac, laptops, an Apple TV, iPhones, etc each connect wirelessly to these very happily.
However, no two computers (say an MBA and an iMac) in the same room, or different rooms, can 'see' the other in the normal way - i.e. by having the other device appear in the left hand pane of the finder window. They can, however, if I enter the IP address of the other machine manually. So this is irritating but not insurmountable.
What does appear insurountable though is that, in a similar way, iTunes cannot 'see' any shared libraries across the network. Because of the issue described above, I had assumed that both problems were probably being caused by some sort of issue with the way the Devolo boxes are configured. But then I realised that, even though each device is connecting wirelessly to the Devolo boxes, I don't actually have a wi-fi network in the same sense that I would if I had an Airport-based system...and if Home Sharing only works over wi-fi, this might explain why it doesn't work for me.
Apologies for the rambling question, but given the increasing popularity of these mains network-extender boxes, I feel I can't be alone in experiencing these issues. Can anyone shed any light?

The quick answer to your question is no, for example Home Sharing works over Ethernet as well. Strictly speaking Wi-Fi is not required and iTunes doesn't care either way.
However, I understand that the Devolo mains adapters have problems coping with this. If I had to guess, the problem might be an inability to carry the required bandwidth. The reason for this is that Airtunes is fairly demanding of bandwidth and if your wireless network's performance is degraded due to any number of variables, Airtunes is the first to suffer.
You didn't say what kind of computer or OS you are using but Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP ports 123 and 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries. Those ports need to be configured in whatever firewall or security settings you may be using. If you are certain you have those ports open on your shared computers then concentrate on the Devolo adapters. Perhaps they are in need of a firmware update or modification of some configuration setting.
