How does icloud work?

I am new to Apple products and recently i bought the iPod 4g and i have no idea how iCloud works. Can someone explain how this works and the reason iCloud even exists? I know that it is used a basically a back-up file thing but how do i get my music and apps to my other iCloud device, such as my laptop. In this area I am ignorant of iCloud. I would like to know more about this App and how to use it.

I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud. Is iCloud pushing my phone's PhotoStream to my computer if it doesn't have the latest OS? Thanks so much for whoever can help!

iCloud will not work with your computer because iCloud requires Lion. Lion requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. For you to have iCloud and PhotoStream you would need to buy a newer Mac Intel model meeting the requirements for Lion:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • HT204053 How does Icloud work?

So I've used Macs basically my entire life, but have only just updated my OS from Leopard to a version that supports iCloud, and from what I've seen it seems like an excellent way to back up everything, but was just curious if maybe I can get an explanation for what it is and how it works.
    Thanks all

  • How does iCloud work? I find it confusing (I'm the complete opposite of tech savvy)

Mainly, I'm confused about backups. (FYI I have an iPhone 5s running on iOS version 7.1.2) How do I know if my phone is automatically backing up or not? Also, if I have already backed up my phone to iCloud, when I back it up again, if I have deleted things since the last backup (texts, photos, apps, contacts, whatever) are those deleted items still saved in the iCloud, or does the new backup replace the old one? Is there a way to delete things that I don't want saved to the cloud anymore? I already looked at the help topics and stuff online but still don't quite understand it all. Apple's wording just doesn't make sense to me. Any tips and tricks for using the clould and how it works are greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of ways of seeing whether it is automatically backing up.
Settings > iCloud > Backup will show the date of the last backup to iCloud
Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage (in the iCloud section, not the Storage section) > device name > shows the date and size of the latest backup.
A restore is all or nothing and will restore what was on your phone as of the last backup. You can delete the entire backup if desired by going to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage (in the iCloud section, not the Storage section) > device name and scroll to the bottom of the screen.

  • How does icloud work with 2 separate libraries on 1 computer?

When my son synced his ipod on his library, all of his music showed up on my daughter's separate library. They just upgraded to itunes 11.0 and it says it has icloud. Before they upgraded, they had completely separate libraries and never had any problems with their music crossing over.

  • How does iCloud Photo Library and Optimize iPhone Storage Work?

Even Apple Phone support can't answer these questions:
How does iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from yesterday's 8.1 update with Optimize iPhone Storage turned on work? (I'm on an iPhone 6)
It only stores your iPhone/iPad versions on your device, which is amazing. Why would you need anything else? It freed up around 8-10GB of space on my device which is amazing. But how does it work when you use it?
When you email it seems to ask you, when sending what size you want to send like it's always done. It gives you the original 2.4MB version. This works like I'd imagine and when I received the test email the photo was correct. In this case I assume it hits iCloud and sends it from there, not your actual device. (Like it doesn't re-download it to email it). Correct?
When posting to Facebook, does it do this same thing? Or is this something Facebook has to build into their iOS app in an update? Or does it just work? Correct?
When posting to Instagram, does it grab the right version. Obviously the phone optimized version should be fine, but when viewing on a Desktop version of Instagram at instagram.com, will it show the right version?
Sometimes I backup photos using Image Capture on the Mac. If I did that right now, would it only grab the iPhone versions? Obviously I can just test it but it'd be amazing if someone who knows these things could explain all of these use cases.
Do you need to be on
In closing it's more of how does this work? Does it work? Why wouldn't you want to use this feature if it saved space and made more sense? I guess I just would love some real clarity since not even the blogs are explaining how it works in every application.
In closing part 2. It does seem to work really well, it's just those fringe cases. I just viewed all my photos on https://beta.icloud.com/#photos and they're all there, easy download of the high res, delete, it deletes from my camera roll on my phone, it's amazing, it works, it's magic. Just tell me what issues there are with storing only low res iPhone on my device and if there are none, game on!
    Thanks!

And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

  • How does vip work?

Today, a VIP mailbox magically appeared in my mailbox list. I was the vip. But, the folder contained only my emails for one mailbox. I have several mailboxes. I went to another mailbox & activated myself as a vip. Now, there are two of me as vip's, but each vip mailbox contains different emails. I want all my emails, in all mailboxes, to be under myself as a single vip. How does vip work, so I can do that?

Does this info from Mail>Help assist?
To keep track of messages you receive from especially important people, make them VIPs in Mail. You can have up to 100 VIPs.
To make someone a VIP, move the pointer to the left of the sender’s name in the message header and click the star that appears. You can also move the pointer over the sender’s email address, click the arrow that appears, and choose “Add to VIPs” from the pop-up menu.
A mailbox for the VIP is added to the Favorites bar. For example, if you make Dad a VIP sender, his messages are displayed in a VIP mailbox titled Dad.
To remove VIP status from a sender, click the VIP’s star in a message. The star is removed and the sender’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Favorites bar.
If a VIP has several email addresses in Contacts, messages from any of those addresses will appear in the VIP’s mailbox.
If you use iCloud Contacts, your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers that use iCloud Contacts and have OS X Mountain Lion installed.

  • How does this work?

This is not a complaint, but a confused sigh of admiration. I've got an email account at the university where I teach. When I got my iBook, it took me a while, and a few conversations with IT at the school, to get this account working in the Mail application. (Since I have a Verizon DSL at home, I had to include that SMTP as the outgoing server.) Anyway, I synched this mail account (along with my AOL and .Mac accounts) onto the iPhone, and it works perfectly, both incoming and outgoing. I didn't have to change any of the settings. I thought I was computer savvy, but I can't wrap my mind around this. It seems like magic. How does it work?

The sync process with iTunes transfers the email account settings (for your chosen accounts via your iPhone sync preferences) from the Mail application on your Mac to the iPhone's email application.
The iPhone is running OS X and the iPhone's email client can be considered a mobile version of the Mail application.

  • My iPhone was stolen and I have contacted the police who are using the meid number to locate.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?

My iPhone was stolen.  I used Find My iPhone app to lock it and display a message.  The phone has not connected to the internet to locate it.  I contacted the police and they have taken my meid number.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?  Are there other ways the theif can use it.  I was told once they put in a new sim card and use it, whatever software the police have, it will show up.

Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes.  If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.
I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

  • Was told a USB device would create a PDF automatically from the data contained within when plugged into my USB port. Doesn't seem to work. How does this work and how can I fix the device I received?

Acrobat is not on the USB device - only Adobe Reader needed on the PC. How does this work? How can I fix this device if at all?

You need to ask the people who sold it to you. Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with Reader.
However, you should be wary of devices that automatically try to open files when plugged in. They can also infect your computers with all kinds of viruses or malware.

  • TS1425 My co worker has given me his iPod to take home and transfer his music to my laptop, however, I am unable to access his music to download it to my computer.  How does this work?

My co-worker has given me his iPod to take home and transfer his music to my laptop, however, I am unable to access his music to download it to my computer.  How does this work?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • How does Remote work with Apple TV?

How does Remote work with Apple TV?
    1. Does Remote, "Play" the music that resides on your iPod Touch>Apple TV>Home Speakers.
    OR
Does Remote "Control" the music that resides on Apple TV HD>Home Speakers.
(If so... say you have a iPod Touch that only holds 8GB's but your music collection on your Apple TV exceeds that amount.
Will Remote still "Control" the larger music collection on Apple TV or your computer?)
    2. Will iPod Wifi work on a patio outside a home to control Apple TV inside the home?
    thank you in advance, Tom

Remote is a way to control iTunes on either your computer or Apple TV using a WiFi connection. See this article for complete instructions.
