How does iOS 8 handle photos. I am very confused...

So since updating to iOS 8 i am bit confused how the photos work... BTW I did not upgrade to iCloud Drive and won't until yosemite comes out just FYI in case this all makes any difference, I assume it doesn't.
(BTW I know lots of people hate the new photos app and how it works but pls I am not writing this to hear your issues with it, I am just wondering how the new system works.. what are the rules)
Since camera roll and photo stream are gone, now both of those are bundled into Collections. I get that.
So now if all pictures (in could and local) are in collections I am assuming now everything that is in the cloud doesn't expire after 30 days like it used to? I mean it wouldn't make any sense because how the **** would I know what's in the cloud and what's not, unless I open each picture individually and see if it has that heart icon or not. If images start disappearing from photos app I will be ******.
So far I figured that if it has a heart icon it is local image (stored on the device, if not then its in the cloud). Speaking of the heart/like icon... what a **** is the point of it? Why would I like a photo that I took myself and only for me?? Has to have some purpose of it's existence...  and why do local images have the heart icon and cloud once do not?? So confusing...
BTW another thing i noticed which is really frustrating... If i take a picture with my phone, the pic appear on my iPad too.. Fine.. If i delete the picture form my phone it deletes from my iPad as well.. Fine all good.. However if i take a picture from my phone and after it shows up on the iPad, I delete it off the iPad it still stays on the phone... Seems stupid.. If they are trying to do with photos what iTunes match does with music I am all for that but keep all devices synced.. Isn't that the whole point of having recently delete folder in case you do change your mind???
I am not gonna proof read this wall of words so excuse typos and spelling as I am writing this off my iPad...

I Understand what you mean by confusing.... I discovered that the photos do delete from the Recent collection from both iPad and iPhone 5c after the update. I had to click around in order to understand what was going on.  i alreday made a fave album for the favorite photos then after the update, I had to do the heart which is unnecessary, as you mentioned.  Why like or fave a photo?  I'm sure people will voice their opinions about how the photos operate. I have other issues to address and hope that thIngs will iron out.  I like the old version of the Photo Stream, I could take a picture with either my iPad or iPhone and instantly the picture would be stored until I edit and add it to an album.  I DO MISS  that feature.  I hope iApple will make changes back to the Photo Stream.  What you could do is contact the iApple support and offer a suggestion.

  • How does iPad handle photo sync / email re-size?

    Hi Everyone..
I have a photo on my computer which is 3.0megabytes in size. I sync this photo to my iPad2.
    All is good.
Now when I go to email this photo from my iPad, it seems to show up as 516k..
What is going on? Is the iPad shrinking a 3.0 megabyte photo down to 516k to email?
    Or
Is the iPad / iTunes shrinking it down to 516k when my computer originally synced it with my iPad, and therefore
the photo resides on my iPad as a 516k file?
    I'm confused.

Hi and thanks for yoru response -
What you're saying seems to be the case with the iPhone but not the iPad.
Unless I'm missing something, there is no option to select a size that I see.. Not like on the iPhone where it says 'Small, Medium, Large, Original'..
    Am using the latest iOS

  • How Does Elements Store Photos?

Is just gotten version 11 for the mac.  I imported one folder of images (which has subfolders) to try out the organizer.  I think I need to understand better what Elements is doing with my images before I proceed.
When I look at the left pane, I see Albums (there are none yet) and My Folders.  There I see the folders of images that were imported.  They are all shown at the same level, with no subfolders.
This leads me to believe Organizer is not actually making copies of my images and importing them, but merely creating a catalogue that points to them.  Do I have that right?  I can use Albums to organize the photos, but once again, the Albums won't contain the photos, but only point to them, correct?
My photos are woefully organized in folders on my hard drive.  I'm almost thinking that before I import into Elements, I should get my folders organized and cleaned up outside of Elements.  Even though I could have good Album structure in Elements. it bothers me that down there at the actual folder level, it's all a piece of @#%&.  Can I use Organizer to do that folder organizing even before I start the Album organizing?
How does Elements handle editing of images?  iPhoto (which copies photos into its catalog), keeps a version of the original when editing is done.  Does Elements do that, or is there only one version of IMG_001 no matter how many edits are applied to it?
If the images are kept in my original folder structure and I edit an image outside of Elements, when I open the image in Elements, do I get the edited image?
I'm trying to decide between iPhoto and Elements, mainly for organizing purposes, so answers to these questions will help me decide.  I appreciate your help.

Under normal circumstances, the organizer is just a database: it merely makes entries for the photos you import, without copying anything. The one exception is the "from iphoto" command, which duplicates the photos in your iphoto library in another location (although, again, the copies are not stored "in" PSE). The reason for this is that poking around at the iphoto library from outside iphoto is a sure way to eventually corrupt the library and lose the photos it contains.
If a photo is in the organizer, you can save as many PSE versions as you like. This is one advantage that organizer has over iphoto. You also have access to all the versions all the time (unlike iphoto where you must lose your edited version to get back to the original.) Overall, I would not say that organizer is a clear winner over iphoto, but this is probably the biggest point on its side in the debate.

  • How does FCP handle 23.98 DV Files?

    Hi All,
Has anyone Edited using the DV-NTSC 24P (23.98fps) Easy Setup?
    1) How does FCP handle this video connected to a DV Converter Box like the Canopus ADVC-110?
    2) Does it actually play at 23.98fps on a monitor connected to the DV Converter Box?
    3) Does it get converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it gets displayed?
    4) is it displayed at 29.97fps or is it really being displayed at 23.98fps?
these are things that I am not sure of.
sorry if I posted this message a couple of times. I didn't know that hitting the "Tab" Button posts the message, I thought it would just function like the Tab in a normal Text editor and indent a line. But here it doesn't.
    thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the feed back. I guess I should fill in the caps a little.
    *DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:*
One of our main Clients Disney, is migrating to a Tapeless Workflow based on ProRes HQ 422 @ 23.98fps. From here on out, they will only send us ProRes HQ 422 1920x1080 files @ 23.98fps and they want us to Edit every project we work on for them @ 23.98fps. At the moment, it doesn't sound like they care if we Edit our projects in ProRes HD or some SD format, but the important thing to them is that we edit @ 23.98fps.
    PROBLEM:
Our facility doesn't have the infrastructure to support 25 machines accessing ProRes HQ 422 files. Our facility was built to support DV NTSC @ 29.97fps and we have been working this way fairly well, for a number of years.
    SOLUTION:
I am trying to find a way to continue to us our current equipment and satisfy Disney's request to work on all their projects at 23.98fps, starting from 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 422 files @ 23.98fps. So, it was my hope to be able to take the 23.98fps ProRes files and export them to 23.98fps DV NTSC. This way we wouldn't have to reconfigure our entire Facility (which would cost a couple hundred Thousand dollars).
    My approach was to:
    1) Use Media Manager to render a new DV NTSC file at 23.98fps, which it does pretty well for the most part. It keeps the Timecode consistent between the two files (very important), but doesn't allow you to Letterbox the 16x9 video in the 4x3 frame, it just stretches it to fill the entire 4x3 frame (not so good).
    2) Then import the newly created DV NTSC 23.98fps file into a FCP Project based on the DV NTSC 24(p) 23.98fps EASY SETUP. Which works well. No problems there.
    3) Then Play the file in FCP out through a Firewire based Canopus ADVC-110 DV Converter connected to a SD Sony Monitor. This seemed to worked fine also.
The fact that it plays is great!!!! But, that brings up the question, is it really playing a 23.98fps?
My understanding of Standard Definition and specifically DV NTSC, is that it can only be displayed at 29.97fps, it doesn't support 23.98fps natively. So the fact that it played when I tested it got me thinking that I may be missing something here and DV NTSC and other SD equipment (like the Sony SD Monitor) can playback/support 23.98fps SD video. But that goes against everything I know up to this point!!!
Have I been wrong all this time?
    1) Can SD Video and DV NTSC Video be displayed at 23.98fps?
    2) Or is it getting converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it is getting displayed?
    3) If it is getting converted back to 29.97fps, then where is it getting converted, FCP or in the DV Converter Box?
I am sorry I went a little long on this email, but it is a problem that will have great influence on they way we work for a couple of years to come!!
    Thanks for your input!!

Help has arrived to assist you with getting those contacts on both your devices. The Verizon cloud service is definitely a great tool to use and you can also use Apple iCloud as well. When you sign into the Verizon cloud on your iPad does it give an option or message to restore?

  • How does Aperture handle file structure

I have been working with iPhoto since its infancy and have one big issue with it, namely that it is such a closed system. I dislike that everything needs to be imported and exported to use it elsewhere, clogging up my computer with all these duplicates. Does Aperture handle that better? I spent 2 hours reading different reviews and discussions and for some reason, nobody seems to discuss exactly that, maybe most people don't mind to have a vault structure? If so, how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
    Thanks ~ Barb

namely that it is such a closed system.
    It's not. It's a Database and this
    everything needs to be imported...
is a characteristic of databases. This
and exported to use it elsewhere
is just not true if you use any of the very many ways that the OS and other applications integrate with iPhoto. I rarely, if ever, exported from iPhoto when it was my primary Photo app.
The point is not to defend iPhoto, but if the database aspect of it irritates you then run a mile from Aperture. Everything has to be imported and can be accessed only in (pretty much) the same ways as they can be in iPhoto.
how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
Here's a stock answer I use over on the iPhoto forum. You can pretty much swap the word 'Aperture' for iPhoto:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
+*(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)+*
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

  • How does Photostream handle duplicate file names?

My sister has an iPhone and an iPad, and takes photos with both. Her husband has an iPhone, and also takes photos. They have a PC. Photostream is enabled on all of these devices.
Now, since all three devices use a simple sequential file numbering system (IMG_XXXX), they will produce duplicate file names.
This, of course, becomes an issue when you consolidate the photos taken by multiple iOS devices in one folder as is done by Photostream on PC.
Which brings me to my question: How does Photostream (on PC) handle duplicate file names? Does it simply overwrite, keeping the one with the latest date, or what? Does it inform the user in any way?
Oddly, I have seen little discussion on this. It really seems like Photostream is pointless

FOLLOWUP. Below, is a clearer explanation of my concern/question.
My sister has an iPhone and an iPad, and takes photos with both. Her husband has an iPhone, and also takes photos. Photostream is enabled on three devices. They have a PC. iCloud Control Panel for Windows is installed, and Photostream is enabled.
Now, since iOS devices use a simple sequential file numbering system (IMG_XXXX.JPG), when you consolidate these images into one folder as is done by Photostream on PC, you will sooner or later encounter two (or more) different photos that have the same file name. Different photos with the same file names can/will happen when you consolidate images taken with different iOS devices into the same folder.
Which brings me to my question:
How does Photostream (on PC) handle duplicate file names that are not duplicate images?
Q: Does it simply overwrite, perhaps keeping the one with the latest date taken? In this case Photostream will not contain all of the photos it should.
Q: Or, does it do something to create a unique filename when it encounters a duplicate file name? For example: IMG_0001, IMG_0001(1), IMG_0001(2)
Oddly, I have seen no discussion on this. I hope someone can help me understand how Photostream handles this so we can decide how best to use Photostream, or if it is a feature we want to disable.
    Thank you,
    Lilla

  • How does iPad store photos when connected to Windows?

I've recently upgraded to iPad2. A friend is interested in buying my original iPad 32gb because she loves iPhoto and would like to move her current 10 gb photo library into it. Uploading new photos from her camera to the iPad is easy with the card reader.  But how could she handle backup of photo files going forward since she works in the Windows world and her primary OS is Windows 7?
I know that when I upload pictures to the iPad in the field and then connect the iPad to my computer at home the Image Capture program asks me if I want to import the photos and where to put them.  Does a similar event take place when using Windows?

Yes - the windows camera wizard should open : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . Or they can be manually copied from the iPad as it will appear as a 'camera' in windows explorer (in a similar way to how a memory card in a card reader would).

  • How does iphoto4 handle panoramic pictures?

    Hi,
My plans are to eventually get a camera that takes panoramic shots. Does iphoto4 handle panoramic pictures?
    Thank you

    Forestman,
From experience, I would suggest you consider buying software that can make panoramas from the photos you take with any decent camera.
I recommend PhotoShop ($$$) or PhotoShop Elements ($ the consumer version that has everything you will need.) There is surely good and inexpensive or free software out there but I don't use them.
Panoramas are very tricky. The Kodak manual Keith mentioned hints at that:
    "NOTE:
For best results, use a tripod. (For a steady shutter release on a tripod, see Using the self-timer.) Only the panoramic picture is saved; individual pictures are not. Picture size is set to 5.0 MP. Exposure and white balance are set with the first picture. The flash is set to Off."
Exposure, white balance, focal length, camera angles, lighting and focus are critical for getting a seamless panorama. Good editing software can do the stitching together automatically (with good exposures) and give you the options for inevitable cleanup (even with good exposures). The software should also have tools for making those quickie handheld shots stitch (perspective, vanishing point)
The built in camera panorama feature may be good but it reduces it to a 5MB file.
That file might not be much better than cropping a high resolution photo to short and wide or skinny and tall.
Home printing is very limited -- you can only fit so much on a page. You might want to check into online printing services that offer panorama prints and see what the market is.

  • How does iphoto handle files exactly?

using the program spring cleaning, i found all images outside of my iphoto library and imported them into my library. my question now is, if i run the search again, finding all images not in my iphoto library, can i safely delete those images since they have been copied into iphoto or are they still needed as a reference for the program? how does iphoto work with files exactly? i know there's an "original" and a "data file", but where are each of these stored? when a photo is imported to the iphoto library, does it make a copy of the original and the data file or what?

    ryanfg
Unless you changed the default setting in the iPhoto preferences, then if a photo is in the iPhoto Window then it's in the iPhoto Library Folder.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.

  • How does FCPX handle audio?

Still working on getting audio exported to an AAF, and having problem doing this.  So I need help understanding how FCPX is handling my audio.
When it's on the timeline, is it being conformed to the frame rate of the video?
When audio is exported, does FCPX force it to conform to the video frame rate in the project settings, audio properties, or both?  Or does it allow the audio to export at whatever rate the original media is at?
I export an XML from FCPX, then open that with X2Pro and it makes an AAF file, but a report tells me that   "Conform rates are not supported. The Conform rate at 01:04:49.23 has been ignored."  So when I go to that timecode, all I see is video at 24p and a detached audio piece at 23.98.  Why are these different?  How would I fix?

FINALLY!  Thank you God, this issue is resolved.  Here's what I learned and had to do in case anyone else may be wrestling with this issue.
Apparently, FCPX handles audio like this:
    • Adjusts varying frame rates to match the project property,  e.g. if you drop footage that is 24, 30, and 60 all on a 24p timeline, FCPX makes them fit into 24p, it does not tell you or show you this, it just does it automatically
    • It may handle detached audio a little differently.  For instance, I had a 24p timeline, and there were 39 detached audio clips that were 23.98 because they were not attached to any video, so I had to reimport and sync, see the workaround below.
The X2Pro, program to convert FCPXML to AAF, spits out a report showing where all the conform errors were, 39 total, but still required calculating where exactly it was because it didn't identify precisely by frames.  Once the offending detached audio clip was located, I then Expanded the Audio Components to see both the original and synchronized audio.  Next I had to go find the external audio that had been synced, then do a replace edit on the old synchronized clip.  This made the audio's video frame rate 24 and took away the conform errors!  Then I had to sync up  the new detached audio clip manually with the video clips above it.
Also, to get out to an AAF with X2Pro, it does not support retiming, so I had to strip out 22 instances of retiming.
Whew, glad that's all over!  Hopefully this AAF will be pristine for my audio post supervisor to bring into ProTools!
Thank you all for your help and input along the way!
