How does IronPort assist in load balancing?

There are plans to put a load balancer in front of an IronPort cluster of 6. As of now, we have Mx record priority (Round robin) based load balancing.
Does an ESA has the intelligence to automatically reject incoming connections if other ESAs in the cluster is idol? Or, in other way, does ESA has the intelligence to reject incoming connections if it sees a series of connection attempts from the same source? Or, does it have intelligence to reject incoming connections if it is devoid of any resource to process any new messages?
Thanks,
Chandan

No.  The ESA will still act in the same stand alone fashion - so, it will act independently with the traffic that is presented.  Other appliances in cluster would not recognize the other appliance's traffic or status for handling mail that is processed --- remember, with the ESA, in cluster - the only thing that is shared is the configuration between cluster appliances.
The traffic handling and load balancing aspect would be based on the 3rd party software/appliance sitting in front of the appliances --- then control the pool of appliances that you have set from there.
I hope this helps!

  • How to remote deploy across load balanced servers

    I have a server farm that is load balanced, how would I deploy to 15 servers at the same time? Or what is the process to do such a thing using SJWS?
    Doing it manually one at a time just doesn't make sense...

    Hi,
    this is a known issue as you will be executing 2 report requests, one to execute the report and the other to retrieve and display the report, in this scenario the second request( to do the display) is forwarded by the LBR to the reports server where the request was NO executed so the error you are getting is expected.
    To resolve this please check the following notes.

    Regarding the second question the issue I think is related to cacheSize and/or maxCacheFileNumber settings in your reports server configuration file.
    Hope it helps.

  • How does udev decide to load oss or alsa when boot up?

    Since Skottish has told me I do not need to blacklist alsa in MODULES in order to use oss.
    I assume that udev will choose oss rather than alsa to load when booting up, then I am wondering how does udev choose which one to load, alsa or oss?
    And suppose one day, I want to use alsa again, how can I make udev to choose alsa instead of oss?
    Also by the way, will there be any conflict to load both alsa and oss together?
    Thanks, guys.:)

    Ok, so udev actually look at what is DAEMON to decide what to load?
    I didn't know this.. I thought when boot up, udev will load alsa by default, then why did the OSS Wiki said we need to put !soundcore in MODULES to blacklist Alsa?

  • How can I debug Aggressive Load Balancing on the WLC ?

    Hello Cisco-Experts,
    I'm looking for the command on the Cisco WLC to debug Aggressive Load-Balancing.
    There is a nice document, ID 107457 describing this feature, but it lacks the command.
    Please investigate and help me and maybe improve YOur documentations.
    Thanks in advance
    Winfried

    Hello NetPros,
    I have disabled now "Agressive Load Balancing" now on the WLC. To my surprise, still Load-balancing packets are received from our HREAP-APs via a WAN-Link on the central WLC.
    Here is an example:
    Tue Jan 13 15:35:59 2009: 00:1c:bf:4a:3f:2e LBS data stored for Mobile 00:1c:bf:4a:3f:2e from AP 00:23:5d:0e:e9:e0(0) new saved RS
    SI (A -128, B -53), SNR 41, inUse 1, [rcvd RSSI (A -128, B -54), SNR 40]
    Tue Jan 13 15:35:59 2009: 00:1c:bf:4a:3f:2e LBS data rcvd for Mobile 00:1c:bf:4a:3f:2e from AP 00:23:5d:0e:e9:e0(0) with RSSI (A -

    It is remarkable that the MAC-addresses of many of the WLAN-clients do not belong to our company and packets are send via a WAN-link.
    Why do I see these packets while load-balancing is disabled ?
    How is this working ?
    Thank You for any explanation.

  • How to modify my wccp load-balance

    hi all
    I've two WAE in my core, 612 (10.99.100.95) and 674 (10.99.100.96)
    and 3750 stack is my core switch
    I configured wccp tcp-promiscuous router-list 1 l2-redirect l2-return mask-asign in both WAE
    and wccp load balance is work fine
    but in my environment ip subnet, like 10.10.10.0
    10.10.10.1 ~ 10.10.10.128 will load balance in WAE-612
    and 10.10.10.128 ~ 10.10.10.255 will load balance in WAE-674
    and I want to reverse it
    I try to change WAE ip address
    but it still haven't change
    anyone could help me ?
    thanks

    This isn't necessarily a problem.  WCCP uses a hash table of 256 buckets to distribute traffic across the devices in a service group.  When you have two devices in the service group, each one gets 50% of the buckets (i.e. WAE1 gets buckets 0-127 and WAE2 gets buckets 128-255).  When a device leaves the service group, the buckets it was allocated are reassigned to the remaining device in the service group.  When a device is added to the service group, it will get 50% of the buckets, but it's not guaranteed that it will get the same 50% it previously had.
    So in your case, when the 674 rejoined the service group, it's possible that it was allocated the buckets that the 612 was previously handling the 800 connections on.  This is normal behavior and not anything to be alarmed about.

    Zach

  • How does Detect() impact remaining character balance?

    I have read a number of discussions here where Microsoft Translator declares that Detect() does not subtract from your account balance.
    However, I'm seeing 1-2 characters substracted for each call we are making to Detect().

  • How does a document down load get a zipper and make a new copy?            py i can"t open? i don't even know what the zipper means help

    why does a document get a zipper on it, I downloaded it I don't know why it's "zipped" when I try to open it it make another copy I can't open what is the problem what did I do to cause this?

    Zip is a method of compressing files for archiving, and is often used for downloading large files or installers.
    Double-clicking the Zip file should unzip it, leaving the original file nearby on the dektop (or in whatever folder you downloaded to).
    If the Mac's built-in tool can't open it, obtain Stuffit Expander from http://www.stuffit.com/mac-expander.html  That will open most forms of compressed files.

  • Adding second 5508 Wireless Controller, how to best configure for load balancing and redundancy?

    We recently purchased a second 5508 wireless controller (both licensed for 100+ AP's).  What is the easiest way to configure and add the second controller so I can split the load between the 2 controllers and provide failover capability?  I do not want to run in an active/standby mode since that will effectively cut our AP capacity by half even with both controllers running.
    Should I just manually configure the new controller (long and drawn out process to configure all the parameters), backup the current controller configuration and import to the second controller (then change the ip address) or is their an easier way to cause the two controllers to synchronize the configurations?
    We are currently running 7.0.240.0 on our active controller and I would rather not upgrade it until we get the new controller online so I can have less downtime and fail AP's between controllers.
    What can you recommend?
    Jim

    I'm assuming then, when I update the software on the controllers I won't be able to choose which controller is primary for an AP anymore and will lose access to the 100 AP licenses (and the capability to have 100 AP's registered, 100 licenses on each Controller).
    Read the Deployment Guide.  It should mention that you can choose which controller is the "primary" and which one is the "secondary".
    If I'm not concerned about quick failover can I still assign a primary and secondary controller for each AP and utilize all 200 AP licenses that are split between the 2 controllers?
    You sure can.  But this "old school" method is a very expensive method.  Why?  Because this means that you have two controllers with similar AP licenses.  The newer AP SSO means one controller has a full license and the other has only an HA SSO license, which is a lot cheaper.

  • How to make IIS plug-in do STICKY load balancing

    There are two classes of scalable services: pure and sticky. A pure service
    is one where any instance of the application can respond to client requests.
    A sticky service is one where a client sends its requests to the same
    instance; those requests are not redirected to other instances.
    It seems to me that weblogic IIS proxy plug-in does not support the sticky
    load balancing.
    Could someone give me some information on how to make the proxy sticky?
    Is there configuration parameters for this?
    Thanks,
    -Lei

    I set the cluster.
    It seems to me that there is some problem with the Set-Cookie mechanism of
    the plug-in.
    Sometime it set the cookie in my browser, sometime it is not.
    Even from the wlproxy.log, I could set something like
    Fri Aug 03 17:56:12 2001 Hdrs to

    But the cookie is not set in my browser, what might be wrong here?
    Thanks,

    I do believe that this will not work since if clustering is not enabled, a
    cookie will not be set on the browser that contains the primary and
    secondary server.
    You are specifying two different ports in your servers. You need to use
    clustering in order to get this functionality with the plugin.Furthermore,
    you will achieve fail-over.

    Here is what I did for the examples under the bea sample directory.
    I put the following in test1/WEB-INF/weblogic.xml
    <session-descriptor>
    <session-param>
    <param-name> CookieDomain </param-name>
    <param-value> *.ariba.com </param-value>
    </session-param>
    <session-param>
    <param-name> CookieName </param-name>
    <param-value> AribaNode </param-value>
    </session-param>
    <session-param>
    <param-name> CookiePath </param-name>
    <param-value> /test1 </param-value>
    </session-param>
    </session-descriptor>
    </weblogic-web-app>
    I add the following in iisproxy.ini
    # This file contains initialization name/value pairs
    # for the IIS/WebLogic plug-in.
    WebLogicCluster=ltang.ariba.com:8001,achu.ariba.com:7001
    ConnectTimeoutSecs=20
    ConnectRetrySecs=2
    Debug=ALL
    WLLogFile=c:\tmp\wlproxy.log
    WlForwardPath=/test1
    DynamicServerList=OFF
    CookieName=AribaNode
    I use SesssionServlet.java as an example
    When I involk http://proxy/test1/SessionServlet, I always get 1
    if I use
    http://proxy/test1/SessionServlet:AribaNode=................................
    I could see the session becomes sticky.
    If I do not want to use URL rewriting, what should I do in order to makethe
    session STICKY
    for this example.

    If you leave the CookieName untouched on the WebLogic side, then there
    should be no reason to make the change in the plug-in.
    But yes, you need to make sure the cookie names are the same.

    Actually, you also need to make sure you set the "CookieName" in theplugin.
    That let's the plugin read the cookie set by WebLogic to determine
    who
    the
    primary and secondary servers are for that session. Otherwise, theplugin
    has no
    way of knowing if you are establishing a new session or returning to
    an
    existing
    one. The cookie will tell it if you have a current session and who
    it
    should
    send you to for continuing that session, or failing that session
    over.

    You need to have clustering so that a cookie is sent back to the
    client
    that
    contains information about where it's session is located.
    Otherwise,
    you
    are just going to get round-robin each time.

  • Set up for TP Link Load Balancer model TL-R470T+

    How to configure TL-R470T+ load balancer?
    This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    The default ip address for managment of this router is 192.168.1.253
    HOWEVER  this access point does not have DHCP turned on by default so you cant just connect (wired or wireless) and browse to that address!!!!
    To get in intially you must assign yourself and address like 192.168.1.5, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
    You dont have to put in the gateway but this will be 192.168.1.253.
    So once you have done this you will be able to browse to 192.168.1.253 to setup the device.
    unfortunatley these are usualy in chinese, which i dont speak so i cant help you there.
    The default user and password is admin all lower case.
    Once you into the device and have learnt chinese, you can then turn on dhcp and you will be assigned ip addresses automagically and can turn your adapter back to dhcp.
    Good luck

  • Web Proxy Server Load Balancing

    I deployed Sun Jave Web Proxy Server 4.0 as a Reverse Proxy. I would also like to use it as a load balancer. As per the instructions, I configured the obj.conf file as shown below
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="https://xx.xx.xx.xx" server="https:yy.yy.yy.yy" sticky-cookie="JSESSIONID" sticky-param="jsessionid" route-hdr="Proxy-jroute" route-cookie="JROUTE" rewrite-host="true" rewrite-location="true" rewrite-content-location="true"
    But, it is not doing load balancing. It always sends to the first server (xx.xx.xx.xx). I guess that is because I used mapping as follows:
    NameTrans fn="reverse-map" from="https:xx.xx.xx.xx" to="https://server.net" rewrite-location="true" rewrite-content-location="true"
    NameTrans fn="redirect" from="http://server" url="https://xx.xx.xx.xx"
    NameTrans fn="map" from="https://server" to="https://xx.xx.xx.xx" rewrite-host="true" name="pa-server-farm1" NameTrans fn="map" from="/" to="https://xx.xx.xx.xx" rewrite-host="true" name="pa-server-farm1"PathCheck fn="url-check"ObjectType fn="block-ip"
    ObjectType fn="cache-enable" cache-auth="1" cache-https="1" query-maxlen="0" min-size="0" Service fn="proxy-retrieve"
    I don't understand how routing and mapping work togother. Any help in this regard is appreciated.

    Motor,
    the following is from the Web Proxy Sever Administration guide. Please, check the last paragraph for the explanation. Any how, the problem is simple. I am using the Proxy Server as the Reverse proxy. And at the same time, I would like to use two origin servers (for load balancing) instead of one. How do I make both load balancing and reverse proxy functions work together?
    Thanks
    To Create Regular or Reverse Mapping
    Access the Server Manager, and click the URLs tab.
    Click the Create Mapping link.
    The Create Mapping page is displayed.
    In the page that appears, provide the source prefix and source destination for the regular mapping,
    for example,
    Source prefix: http://proxy.site.com
    Source destination: http://http.site.com/
    Click OK.
    Return to the page and create the reverse mapping, for example,
    Reverse mapping:
    Source prefix: http://http.site.com/
    Source destination: http://proxy.site.com/
    To make the change, click OK.
    Once you click the OK button, the proxy server adds one or more additional mappings. To see the mappings, click the lView/Edit Mappings link. Additional mappings would be in the following format:
    from: /
    to: http://http.site.com/
    These additional automatic mappings are for users who connect to the reverse proxy as a normal server. The first mapping is to catch users connecting to the reverse proxy as a regular proxy. The / mapping is added only if the user doesn't change the contents of the Map Source Prefix text box provided automatically by the Administration GUI. Depending on the setup, usually the second mapping is the only one required, but the extra mapping does not cause problems in the proxy.
